When Harlem was in Vogue by David Levering is a great read on Black people making miracles out of very little in the United States. These people prospered despite societal ills and in less than eighty years after Emancipation.
The later generations fell prey to the Communists looking for a foothold in America and unfortunately they didn't consider what these people would want in exchange for their help. Their ideology has caused this downfall. Sad.
Harlem was developed by a black real estate investor. Was an upper middle class neighborhood for upwardly mobile blacks in NY until the Depression. Certainly no ghetto!

Yes, that lady was definitely wearing a corset as the style back then was to achieve a tiny looking waist, which often times was more harmful than helpful. My father told me how my grandmother had her corset pulled so tightly that it caused a large blister on her side; after visiting her family doctor to be treated for it, he advised her not to wear her corset anymore and she followed his advice and never wore it again. Thank goodness she listened to him instead of using a homemade medicine that she would often make to use as her "cure-all".

I love looking at things like this it makes me appreciate my history and how far we have came yet we are stuck in this tumultuous mindset and we must learn to move forward with peace and gracefulness.

It's called a corset. But yes people did eat much better back then and moved more.
Rickets was a problem for many Black people in those days, up til about the 1950's.
Yes, that lady was definitely wearing a corset as the style back then was to achieve a tiny looking waist, which often times was more harmful than helpful. My father told me how my grandmother had her corset pulled so tightly that it caused a large blister on her side; after visiting her family doctor to be treated for it, he advised her not to wear her corset anymore and she followed his advice and never wore it again. Thank goodness she listened to him instead of using a homemade medicine that she would often make to use as her "cure-all".
