I come back to these time and time again to fuel those art slump days. It revitalizes that drive to fill a sketchbook with any and everything! Thank you for making these
What an absolutely incredible artist. What he said spoke to me on an emotional level and how he said it made me feel calm and like there's somebody who understands how I feel. This series is great already.
Just a fantastic concept, one of my fave series on YT. Beautifully simple, yet stunningly complex. Its wonderful to see this artist, for somebody who doesn't gain much solace from art, he's exceedingly good at it. Found his world views interesting, almost jaded. Great first entry into the season TH!
I'm watching the whole series and this is one of my favourites for sure. These videos are really inspiring....nicely directed...pleasant to watch. I love the idea of artists talking about themselves while shuffling through their old sketchbooks. Great series thank you THU
On the difference between Art and Design: "If they can fire you, it's not Art..." On the myth of The Artist driven by emotions, passion and creativity: "Nobody is going - I have to be creative now! - It doesn't work like that..."
Love these episodes that give us a more inimate insight into the lives of the creators. I wonder if Sylvian plays the guitar, one of his thumbnails looked like it might be a strummer! 😀
i saw the late Kim Jung Gi go through his sketchbook and thought it was super cool and wanted to look into it more, didnt know he was already on the sketchbook series
The work of Sylvain Despretz is interesting but we recognize too much the brilliant Moebius (Jean Giraud) in all his drawings. (Sylvain Despretz worked with him for several years...). Sylvain Despretz is a talented imitator.
I dunno what he means by, "If they can fire you it's not art". Does he mean that since it's more focused and like technical research it's basically studying and thus not art? Meanwhile art is more of a process where someone take their emotions and current ideas and puts them on paper (a more free and conceptual process)? I'm confused... Oh well. I don't need to understand it I guess.
As a professional artist, you often find yourself working for less creative people than yourself. The work you produce has to pass through the filter of an industry led by a large committee, one strongly influenced by commercial trends and the conclusions reached by market research companies. It's very easy for all these factors to rob art of it's essential vibrancy and originality - consequently, it easily becomes a successful 'product' (if they're lucky) but loses a lot of it's artfulness along the way.
Art has a component of self-governance and autonomy from any and all authority other than the artist himself or herself. If it's art, the the artist is the boss. An artist is guided by his own muses. If someone else gives the orders, makes the call, determines when the work is done, how can it be "art"? People who can't do do this stuff shouldn't be able to tell people who can what to do... An artist can't be serving a brand, because where art is present, the artist IS the brand.

I’m discovering this artist. It’s looking a lot like Moebius (Jean Giraud) work... maybe too much.

He definitely likes Moebius. So do I. I'm just saying. Lol.

OK the art is good but I don't give a shit about every pore in the dude's face.
