A Visit to Grand Cities Mall

- Grand Cities Mall is one of the more interesting properties out there, having a look that's still traced back to the 60s. While it was the first mall in the area, it would wind up being forced to play second fiddle to the Columbia Mall. On paper, the mall shouldn't be here, yet it still is, holding a niche for itself.

I lived in Grand Forks briefly after graduating high school. (Kind of a pit stop between graduating in the upper mid west and moving overseas.) If you had walked a little further down the hallways that had the bricked up old entrance into K-Mart you would have walked right past where Del's Restaurant used to be. All their food was good standard diner fare but for some reason the cheeseburgers there were just awesome! (Someone said mid-2000s the original owner was no longer involved and it took a turn for the worse but I can't confirm.) I used to shop in the Toucan Market for curry ingredients, etc. When I was young I remember visiting this mall from out of town and they had a pet shop down one of the side hallways. They had this huge pet pig wandering around that scared the cr*p out of me as a little kid-it was bigger than I was.
I can confirm for the Dels Restaurant, I grew up in Grand Forks and my family loved that diner. I think it was 2010's the original owner sold Dels and the new management tried to change stuff up in the small town which people didn't like. Plus a few years after that one of the oldest/best waitresses passed away and the new people they hired weren't bad but just werent as outgoing and friendly.
America before it all went wrong. Looks like the hallways of my high school back in the 70s. Props to you for showing this to us. I wonder what each persons story is who has a car parked in the parking lot.
I love this mall! It’s so retro and has a good variety of stores.
Yes, very retro. The video thumbnail gives that away.😊
This one was truly unique. Wow. Thanks so much for taking us along.
I believe your correct it was a movie theater.. I remember going to movies there when I was just a kid.
I like boring. I have always liked peace and quiet. So I would like a boring place.
I also like peace and quiet. I like it even more because of annoying family members.
Same here...I went to college in NYC and after graduation, I thought do I really want to live in this place. Born and brought up in the country on a dairy farm, I couldn't wait to leave, I did stay on for a good job for 2 years in College Point, NYC, but that was it. So living near this mall would be just what I like. I do live in a suburb now of a small city and its okay, but couldn't live in the city with all the crime.
That place gave me the creeps, something so eerie about it. It would be a great location for a horror movie. I live close to the US border and we used to go to Grand Forks all the time for as long as I can recall. Inflation and better avail. of products online have caused us not to visit in years. I can only remember going to this mall once or twice as a kid, we never went back and stuck to Columbia, I think I know why...lol. It wasn't much better years ago. Around 2018-ish we visited the Kmart near there that was still open: it was like a total time warp, they still sold Vitalis hair solution and other products I swear looked like they'd been around since the 80s and 90s. We called it the Kmart that time forgot: very twilight zone.
Cool to see you going to ND. I know the one in Fargo has a museum dedicated to baseball legend Roger Maris. I'm anticipating the episode of my childhood mall Fairlane Center. Cheers
I myself prefer things that are interesting and people that are boring, not the other way around.
Not a bad mall. To me, the interior has a mix of urban/cottage house vibes. It's such a random combination, but I like it.😊 Nice upload Doomie.
This mall gives me Dawn of the Dead (1978) vibes. The look of the stores. Very 1960's-70's.
These people must be ruthless to have this high of an occupancy rate and such diverse(?) tenants.
I have always loved those Chattahoochee river stone / pebble type exopied walls! They were so common back in the 70s and 80s!
Bramalea City Centre used to have a Home Hardware store in the 80s.
So awesome seeing these malls most of us never knew existed!
Yes, exactly. That's always good.😊
This place always had an odd vibe but not exactly a bad one. I do remember there being a rock climbing place in there at one point but not the carousel. The K Mart was a K Mart when it was there.
1st. I like that area in the middle with all the tables and chairs. Are there food places there too?
This mall is nicknamed the Dirt Mall Also had the $1 theater in it
Yes, it was a movie theater.
Great video Doomie, I love these kind of malls that hang on because there is mostly local content. So many of malls past, were all the same, no matter where you were, Florida,. California, etc. Sort of Like walking into a Home Depot, and can you guess what part of the country you in, probably not. Maybe no snow blowers in Florida but that's about it.
If only you could have gone over the border to Saskatchewan. Basically an extension of ND.
Some of my favourite vintage malls you covered were the Mellor Park Mall and Jasper Mall. I like Jasper Mall way better. 🙂☺💛💚💙💜
I wish malls will make a comeback soon! Online shopping and social media can’t replace real malls , real in person shopping and real life socializing.
Me too I wish malls can make a comeback. Sadly, I don't think it's going to happen. I love shopping at the mall and other people should love it too but the problem is they're too busy with technology and that's the problem. SMH.
I'm lucky I live in Montreal, Quebec. No malls ever close around here. We only have a few malls and they're always busy every day.
I think unfortunately its only going to get worse. Most people like shopping on-line and have it delivered. Back when shopping on-line met hefty shipping fees on checkout, many would just go to the local store to buy. Plus at night, parking lots aren't very safe in many areas.
@@iworkout6912It truly depends as many people like to go and try the stuff on. Plus, sometimes you need it right away instead of waiting for it to be delivered.
@@ms.zelman3032I think they can make a comeback if they add other fun things like fun activities , dining and other things to attract people to come. That way, they can shop and do everything else and have fun too. You cannot do that shopping online.
The entrance that you came through looks creepy
In the Philippines malls have Ace Hardware stores in them. Which I find bizarre.
Well Malls are meant to be a "Place To Get It All". So having an Ace Hardware would help you do that.
I only went here when sears and kmart was attached haven't been there in forever
Some Mexican malls have hardware stores like Ace.
But not many malls have a store that sucks!!😂😂😂😂
It was called plaza twin.
Wow! I swear the far west had a lot of cool malls.
Open 1977 closed in 2000 when carmike opened.
The vacuum cleaner store sucks!
😂
Wisconsin is boring
