Mascot Horror's REJECTED Games

- Another video on Mascot Horror! God I must be digging at the absolute bottom of the barrel at this point.. But, that's actually the entire point of this video! The question this time being "does the mascot horror formula always mean success?" Today, we seek out to see if it's more nuanced than that, by looking at 3 mascot horror games that just simply did not catch on. Do these games deserve their standing as lesser successes in the Well-oiled machine of Mascot Horror? Or, will my expectations be subverted? We'll just have to see in our coverage of this topic.

It's a shame Leenie Boog didn't catch on much, I actually really liked the designs of both the monster and the level areas.
low-key, i'd love to see a little red-riding hood twist or three little pig on this game. the design of the monster was reminiscent to me of the big bad wolf.

Always pretty interesting seeing “failed” Mascot Horror games, they’re always either really underrated and cool or… it can be Hide Time…
It's either good & underrated, or it's Hide time
The environment look decent for Hide Time, they need to fix everything else
Poor Hide Time lol
"pipe wrench thing" holy shit i think thats literally a soup ladle LOL
Leenie and Egghead Gumpty were decent, especially Leenie, and really had a ton of potential to be awesome. Thanks for reminding me of their existences.
Leenie's weakness is that nothing ties the atmosphere and locale of the game to the character of Fantastic Mister Fox. That and having character named so obscure like Artaktikon doesn't jog the memory well.
Egghead Gumpty is what I wished Garten of Banban could have been, and both should receive more polish.
Another hat and time fan!
**Greetings**
@@Hat64 Hello to you too.
maybe one day a person will revive Leenie and make it better becuse i relly like the consept.
@@defaulted9485 Wait I thought Leenie Boog was some folklore monster, he's supposed be Fantastic Mr. Fox?
Y'know, mascot horror really reminds me of old slasher movies. You have your singular, easily recognizable antagonist, multiple sequels, and a general deterioration in quality that can still be (sometimes) enjoyed ironically.
I've been thinking this for a long time now
They’re basically playable slashers
atleast slashers have some charm to them
@@Hello-xy9it some mascot horror characters have charm too but most of the time they are more lifeless than myers and jason
Bro I’ve been thinking the same thing
I would argue Leenie Bøøg was less of a mascot horror game and more of a standard monster survival horror.
Yeah, like Leenie isn't really a mascot, they're just a werewolf.
4:40 Fighting ducks with a soup ladle has to be the best thing to come out of Mascot Horror
Oh I remember Leenie Boog, it did make an appearance as a demo in one of Markiplier's 3 scary games.
Yeah and he also played the full version about a year ago
@@toxic_shr00m Yep.
Saw it from FusionZGamer
I actually sought out videos showing the other ending after mark finished it cuz I was really interested to see it.
People feel like this towards mascot horror because its just stale now, as new ideas are just repeatable gimmicks that mostly just serve as cheap filler or marketing. I reckon that we’ll have to wait at least a year or two for something redeeming to pop up and change the genre for the better.

I just find it so funny that Egghead Gumpty’s jumpscare is so much better than every single jumpscare in Garten of Banban.
Yet it’s so weird that it’s also an egg. And named Gumpty.
I mean, it’s still not flumpty, it’s just a weird coincidence, or inspiration
Flumpty is watching over everything, and is the REAL reason why there is no Gumpty sequel.
Not really that funny, Garten Of Banban isn't even horror. It was made to be a joke, and so of course it's not as scary as a horror game
@@saphirestorm7952garten of banban is taken seriously by the devs

When egghead gumpty said “it’s humpty time” and killed everyone in the backrooms, it was one of the most dramatic scenes in gaming history

Clicked on the video just to say that the wolf from Leenie Boog is both incredibly terrifying and incredibly attractive

Bro WHAT
Oh I remember lerny boog or whatever it is called, if I recall correctly this was made way before the mascot horror trend infested the internet landscape.
the Leenie Boog flashlight looks like a bootleg of the one from The Light Keeps us Safe
It reminded me of Zardy's Maze
Leenie boog actually seems interesting
I don't rlly think the mechanics of Leenie Boog and FNAF4 are comparable. There are other games that use the exact same mechanics and are dettached from mascot horror.
Leenie Boog resisting the light for a bit is actually pretty cool in my opinion seems to be the best part for me. it just feels unrelistic that the murder monster, although sensitive to light, just immediately makes a u turn when you point a flashlight at it.
With Leenie Boog however it feels like you are wearing down the monster to the point where it has to retreat to recoup and attempt to catch you again.
We need a Leenie Boog remaster honestly
leenie is literally legoshi from beastars
I never thought of Leenie as mascot horror, tbh. I feel like the whole point of mascot horror is that a child-favored icon is evil, whether that icon is an animatronic, a cartoon, etc. Leenie doesn't fit that vibe for me.
Leenie Boog reminded me of Night Blights, just with fewer mechanics and multiple locations. I feel like if it kept to one location and focused on mechanics and atmosphere it would have been popular
Leenie bøøg had a lot of potential IMO, I’m hoping the devs don’t give up and go on to create something great.
I think Egghead Grumpty was inspired by One Night at Flumpty's
same. mainly cause grumpty sounds alot like flumpty
@@darknesstheemowolf haven't you head of humpty dumpty before??
@@thegiantrat389 though Flumpty's did take inspiration from the original children's rhyme, an egg antagonist isn't particuarly..common, and Gumpty came out briefly after ONAF if I do recall. Also, just..look at the eggs side by side.
Leenie had so much potential.
But kids liked to play "Garten of BanBan" more than an actual good horror game, I feel bad for Leenie for not getting the attention they deserved
Kids play Garten of Banban to get scared despite it being a joke that makes fun of mascot horrors, it's kinda reminiscent of people watching the Childs Play franchise and Scary Movie franchise to get scared despite them being comedy franchises
strongest leenie boog fan vs weakest garten of banban enjoyer
Which they're more likely to play true horror games. I think mascot horror has a place.
I dont really like hide time, but the developers are really nice, and this is their first game so i cut them some slack. Theyre very active on discord, and are really nice! Tldr: not the best game, but great devs
Does anyone else think it's weird that he brings up the issue of scaling and to illustrate his issue he uses security breach, where you play as a kid that is leaning like he has scoliosis all the time, and in leenie boog you play as an adult cop or whatever, doesn't seem very fair, overall I think Leenie boog is getting a weirdly harsh treatment. At the very least this game isn't an incomplete hook to tempt you to pay actual money for more garbage.
Well first time I ever saw someone refer to a ladle as a pipe wrench, that actually made me pause.
I legit went to the comments looking for one pointing it out when I heard it
can we add Zardy's Maze to this list?
it's not rejected but it's very very underrated and doesn't deserve to be overlooked
Zardy’s Maze got really popular after its FNF mod released
@@QUBIQUBED I was a fan from the beginning and I wish more people knew Zardy from Zardy's Maze as opposed to from FNF
i love that game ! i wish more people played it
Well, since you're talking about "Rejected Mascot Horror" games, would a video on Maze of Bouncy Bear, a trilogy of VERY obvious Garten of Banban clones, be good?
Garten of Banban clones are the signs of the collapse of civilization
I feel like any tnp (thatnerdpunk) game could be covered for failed mascot horror tbh
I think the scaling was in relation to the story in Leenie Boog, I think that the protagonist is meant to be a dwarf-like character
11:25
Well to be fair, in Security Breach you're supposed to be a small child.
Hide Time looked like it would of been good if you change the gameplay, enemies, and visual camera. The environment is surprisingly decent to capture the ideal atmosphere. Also, your fighting with a Ladle in that game, not a pipe
I honestly have some respect for Leenie Boog. While certainly not the best, I can feel the passion put into it, if that makes sense. It feels like the creator actually _cared_ about the game compared to the others.
Is it me or does Leenie look like Legosi from Beastars? Could just be the antro wolf but the clothes are what remind me specifically of him.
the reason hide time looks bad is from TAA. the motion blur is TAA, the textures are probably from TAA, the distance blur is from TAA too
What is TAA? I'm trying to understand the comment but I don't understand the acronym and google isn't really helping me
@@denjidenji9162 temporal anti aliasing. possibly the worst type of anti aliasing, with fxaa as a close second.
the way taa works is by taking previous frames into account when smoothing edges. this creates a really horrible smear effect whenever the camera moves
@@Hyprst i see. I learned something new today! It really does sound like a terrible method to use
@@denjidenji9162 its used because when you're standing still, it looks good, theres little performance impact, and can be dropped into the game without changing much.
also, a lot of effects (like reflections in some games) are undersampled, and use taa to look decent. the thing is, this forces taa to be turned on in games (and dont let you turn it off)
no one's gonna mention that Leenie looks extremely similar to Legoshi from Beastars?
Nope. nobody is going to.
Not many people watch Beastars
It's not even meant for children
I feel like there's multiple characters that fit that group.
@@I_Dont_Believe_In_Salad didn't it get published in a shonen magazine
i reminded me of the big bad wolf, like from old fairytales, but i see what you mean.
that pipe wrench thing is called a ladle, it's used as a big spoon to server soup
leenie is straight up medic tf2 with a fox head
Can't believe they figured out how to put a pyro cosmetic on medics body
It’s literally just legoshi from beastars
To be fair, the Medic is a lot scarier than a lot of horror characters, not just mascot horror but I think like Michael Myers is less scary than the Medic, I mean he can literally keep you alive as a head in a fridge and put off killing you as some tedious errand
That first game had you fighting with a ladle and that's funny
in Leenie, Egghead Gumpty and Hide Time's defense (said respectfully ) maybe some day the developers can make them better
The scale in Leenie Bøøg is correct, the detective you play in game is a kind of dwarf/halfling race
people gotta stop giving these guys goofy names, it makes sense for PPT because they're children's toys but why does it need to be called the Leenie Boog no one's gonna be screaming if someone's like "THE LEENIE BOOG IS COMING"
“THE LEENIE BOOG IS COMING”
That made me laugh.
I wouldn't say Lennie boog is mascot horror just a horror game.
The syringe gimmick COULD HAVE been good. Like, you could use it as a weapon without being told expressly, and it could lead to a new ending or something. But they ran that into the ground with the abhorrent quality of the game and the gimmick itself. They could have just made it quicker to get the stuff, and only have the padding later on where you could, say, need to mix colors to power a door (which, as long as it's still short or possibly instant to get the substance, doesn't mean too much).
I'm not trying to encourage the devs to do a remake (actually please no don't do it), but it's just wasted potential.
I actually do hope they make a remake, they're really nice and it was their first game and they're getting better with the reviews of their games, so I hope that one day Hide Time can get a remake
These games looked pretty cool, and if you ever do decide to do a part 2 of this video. you should play venge, its a real cool mascot horror game that was made by a minecraft animator youtuber
Daggz is a weird phenomenon! Like seeing someone you think you recognize on the street! I see their videos on my recommended and i go "Who is this? i've seen them before!" and then i click on the channel and remember exactly who you are!
leenie boog is criminally underrated
"pipe wrench thing" ah so I've been calling the soup ladle the wrong thing all my life.
Yo the tool that you use for the combat part in Hide Time is a soup ladle 😄
In Leenie Boog, you are playing as a child, that's why everything is so tall.
Hey, not sure how often you play roblox but in one of your roblox videos something you said stuck out to me. You mentioned about how some games had passion, and one of those games if you haven’t heard of it already is called Arcane Odyssey. It’s not mascot horror or horror at all, but if you want to see a roblox game that is truly someone’s passion you should check it out it’s amazing
I think the weapon in Hide Time might be a ladle. Unsure though.
4:41 @Daggz, did you just call a ladle spoon a "pipe wrench thing"? As a chef I feel disappointed. Still good video though. lol
Leenie Boog looks like a Beastars AU where Legosi succumbs to the back alley market and becomes a coked up druggie
Ok i don't know if this is a Mandela effect but i remember when leenie was JUST made, the player was originally a rabbit. I don't remember if it's true but i always assumed that from rhe whole fox looking enemy short protagonist thing.
The tiny bug bots from hide time are actually four legged ducks as shown in 4:49
Just wait until he hears about Bouncy bear's maze. 1 and 2 and a spin off i think
0:01 I haven't even started and this killed me 😭💀
Glomblo Blomblo needs a mascot horror game, NOW.
Basically the thing is -
unfortunately making art and social media management are different skills. You can make a shit game but be a god at managing social media accounts, and you can make a very cool game and go largely unknown in the sea of other titles because you forget to make sure others see it.
A lot of the successful 'mascot horror' as people have come to call it, are no different from little crunchy indie horror games that came before or after, but the creator happened to have the ad budget or the social media skills [or got lucky with something going viral] for the game to be seen by more people
basically - if you get enough eyeballs on something you can bruteforce success, that's how a lot of bigger corporations get away with such objectively shit content too.
4:40 bro thats a fricking ladle.
You know a game is bad when it makes garten of banban look good. Like damm Hide time looks really bad
The owner of the video literally said it looks like more love and care is being put into Hide Time than Garten of BanBan. "Garten" in "Garten of BanBan" isn't even spelled right! It's spelled "garden". The Erphobic brothers are still learning though, so I'll give them a pass. For now.
@@lilysamvelian9970 it's called garten because it takes place in a kindergarten
@@lilysamvelian9970 mostly talking about the designs of the monsters and also just the gimmick looks really lame compared to banban's honestly
@xord6286 you dont shorten the word kindergarten "oh then its just garden in german" no because the game takes place in canada and its not a fucking garden either
leenie boog could do something that not many games can do anymore actually be scary
I've always wondered why none of these caught on
leanie boog is such a dang good game thought and actually is REALLY old but finally got a full release but in a bad time and gets summed withthe others, its such a good game and even markiplier playd it
Honestly if you want to make a mascot horror game that blows up. Then go two routes. 1: make the game before anyone else can and make it super good. Or make it bad and super marketable. There’s no in between,
I remember watching Kubz Scouts play Leenie Boog, I really liked the concept and I think it had the most potential out of all the three games
Hi Daggz, I have been scrolling down on the Roblox page and I keep running into different types of Roblox horror games.
Here’s a list
-Obscure
-Paracam
-Submarine Simulator (I didn’t run into that one. I just wanted to mention it to you.)

In “Hide Time,” I think our weapon might be an upside-down soup ladle
19:24 as questionable as that game is the concept of being able to kick door open with a risk of noise in a survival game is pretty cool and not one I think I’ve seen before
Egghead gumpty looks like a wish five nights at flumptys 💀
its sad that "some" of these mascot horror games arent as popular as other maschot horror game even tho its pretty decent and very well made, well it looks like horror games nowadays has lose the thing that made them "horror"
Okay the "weapon" in the first game is definitely a soup ladle, for whatever reason.
I have issues with lights in-game and watching the Hide Time gameplay nearly gave me a stroke
I actually follow the devs who made hide time, they really nice people & this was the 2nd project they made (The other was an bendy fan game).
I think it usually goes without saying but just because I don't like a game doesn't mean I don't like the people that made it. There's no doubt in my mind that the people who made hide time are pretty cool, esp if they're self aware of what they're making. I just hope that although my criticisms can be hyperbolic at times, they can take the feedback I feel I do give to create something better next time! That's the goal with these types of videos at least
They should make a satire game

What always turns me off with horror games is when they do the "oooaahh science experiment gone wrong" or "ooo entities/animatronics go bonkers" lore. It gets real tiring to see logs that have doctors or scientists in it. If you gonna do a mascot horror, atleast make the lore unique and interesting instead of a cookie cutter story😭 a game that did their lore in a unique and fun way is night at humpty's. I just love that their lore is silly in a way while still being a scary game. Another one is treasure island as it uses the base of the creepy pasta to make a lore for the game.
🤓

I kinda wish someone would come along and reinnovate on this genre already, redefine what a mascot horror is.
The question is, what exactly WOULD redefine mascot horror?
More of what COULD, but yeah, that's essentially the issue.

9:52 You really want them to go MORE into FNaF 4? That’s literally Nightmare Foxy.
the "weapon" in high time is a ladle which is the worst weapon someone could think of
