For anyone not wanting the hassle of attempting to get these to work, there is a set of modded drivers that happen to be much more stable, and the performance is similar in most titles: forums.guru3d.com/threads/13-1-reloaded-driver-for-legacy-users.374236/ Just found these, which also work great: drive.google.com/open?id=1zJMtCm6-h37vRf0PoZntcPTrYF7OU-9N
You can use dx11 on these cards, try wineD3D for windows. Basically, its a wrapper for dx11 games which translates them into opengl. I have had some success on older intel hd graphics, managed to run fallout 4 on first gen hd graphics, though it was not a good experience.
I tried using wineD3D with Watch_Dogs and Battlefield 1 and V beta but the games crashed before opening. I don't have fallout 4 but if it works with that then it could be great for anyone with GTX 200 series or below which don't have dx11 at all.
are there any drivers for Windows Xp 32 bit for newer graphics cards? I want to build a PC for old games but I wont do it If I can dual boot win xp and win 10 on a new machine........
Oh hey! I worked on those drivers! Leshcat, VonCrisp and I :D Glad they worked out for you man, and just saying, this video is awesome. Been a long time since I even thought about these drivers tbh lol.
I'm sure this is a complicated question to answer... :) but do you think these might work with the old direct x 10 & 11 integrated gpus. I'm super close to running some AAA games on old AMD A8-3510MX (HD 6620g graphics). I've already overclocked the processor to 2.8 all cores (from 1.5 base/2.5 boost) and the igpu core and memory which is also maxed in afterburner. It's been running that way for almost 2 years :). I can get Star Wars Battlefront 2015 to run between 20-35 fps but I feel like these drivers might do the trick! Thoughts?
Daniel Lee - from 2011 through to Nov 2017 I was using an A6-3500 and GT520. Not exactly stellar hardware. The jump to a Ryzen 1700X and GTX970 was insanity.
Great work, I certainly wouldn't have guessed performance like this. Makes you wonder what other older cards could do nowadays with proper driver support.
I don't play any modern titles, but I get about 170 on Rocket League and 180 on League of Legends, 130 on Overwatch, that kinda deal. It's a good card but has been mined recently so you'd be better off spending another £40-50 and getting a 1060 6GB.
I bought some 1050 Ti factory overclocked card with like 2 fans and extra power connector. At the time I didn't expect much but like every game I have thrown at it runs 1080P no problems. I usually just run emulators and play video on it but it's nice to know it's there if I want to use it instead of my main PC.
I have a single fan non-factory-OC 4GB card, and I just OC'd it in Afterburner by a few % and set its fans to 75-80% -- I never go over 65c in any modern title I do run such as fortnite. You can get some really good performance out of a 1050Ti. They're great middle ground cards for starting off with newer titles. If you're more into the newer games, I suggest a 1060 6GB or a 1070Ti.

I wasn't expecting Leshcat's drivers to be mentioned. I used to use the drivers extensively a few years back on my laptop! At the time it was the only way for computers with 'switchable graphics' to have up-to-date drivers. Very sad day when he had to stop supporting them!
*JAZZ MUSIC INTENSIFIES* But in all honesty, this was a cool vid! I wonder if other modified drivers could potentially save other, older cards as well.
Cheers man, feel free to give them a go, but to say they're temptemental is an understatement... Still nice performance boost in most titles.... Shame that the 13.4 Drivers are so poor.
I would, but the fact that I switch out so many cards on my test system would make them very time consuming to install. Maybe when I get some time :) Oddly enough, I'm finishing up on my next video, which has a HD 3870 in it. I'm using Windows 7 which helps a little, but unfortunately frame times are still terrible with the 13.9 drivers...
yes i have run Crysis and its expansion maxed out onall settings (except AA had it 8x instead of 16x) on my Ati Radeon HD4890 (8gb ram ,Phenom 965BE) , it was a beast of a card unfortunately it didnt have dx11 support or else it would be perfect for games like dying light, alien isolation etc etc, dont know how these experimental drivers work but im gonna give them a try
It can run crysis pretty much. Around GX 260 performance is good to run it fine on the (then) common resolution of 1280x1024 maxed with 4x or 8x MSAA On 1600x1200 it gets a bit tight but with reduced settings should be "playable" And yes the HD 4850, 4870 and 4890 are almost identical from a technical standpoint, one driver should fit them all.
The last best (Official) drivers were 11.11c which had the best performance for them. Since 13.x drivers AMD moved hd 2xxx/3xxx/4xxx to legacy support thats why it was so slow on 13.x
I had really good luck with old 2010 drivers and 2011 drivers with my HD 6950 which is weird because that's before the card released. It improved my frame rate in the original Far Cry by like 300% and higher. I really think gamers should get really creative with custom operating systems and their drivers for certain eras. GTAIV is a great example of this. I remember even though the textures still had the unloading and reloading problem the game ran a lot more stable on its initial first year release. Some updates help games, others bring it down. Better off trying to run some games on older hardware with really old pirated software (if you already own the game of course). Games like GTAIV would refuse to start because the updated services are completely incompatible with the previous launcher of the original version
It's sad how drivers can limit such decent cards as that one. I once had troubles with my previous GPU the R7 360 but in the end it only had issues due to how I had disabled windows update so it was lacking some very important update or something. Took hours to notice after countless of drivers...

You can get decent graphics cards for super cheap nowadays. On my UA-cam channel I tested a 20$ Quadro graphics card that actually held up pretty well against more modern games. Great video!
Yeah, just recently picked up a 20 dollar 560ti for my little sisters rig im building, it handles a lot more than minecraft with mods ill tell you that much.
Brandon Hall Ikr it is pretty shocking what you can do with 20$. I just tested that Quadro with an 8$ core 2 quad q6600 and it can actually play fortnight!
I remember this card. Not because I owned one but because a very good friend of mine did (looking at you Hellfighter!). I had the HD 4870 and when it came time to upgrade, I just decided to get a second one because Crossfire would be viable for a long time to come. The idea that you got this card for one pound sterling four years ago blows my mind. Whenever I see things like this, cards for so cheap, it's almost always a a card that was never great to begin with but this card was one of the most powerful single-GPU cards in the world when it was released. That's pretty impressive.
10.80 price = HD7770/R7 250, great for 1080p gaming 4K pennies (£40) = GTX 670 / GTX 580, will do 4K gaming alright, although you may need display adapter to get the video signal out at 4K
You're limited to old games for that 4k options. Modern titles are almost impossible to run on 4K max settings (60fps) except for 1080ti. If youre running at 4k medium decently, you could've gone for high at 1440p which looks better
Holy crap. The 4K pennies idea would actually be a pretty great idea. You could actually get a gtx 750 for about $40 on aliexpress (m.aliexpress.com/item/32854134267.html?pid=808_0000_0101&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.32854134267&) and seeing as that is about as powerful as a gt 1030 4K even on modern games but at low settings should totally be possible. Also, if looking for a deal, you could probably get a better card at the same price.
Thats a rather large increase in firestrike from a driver update, does this mean AMD and Nvidia are making Drivers that gimp older cards? Maybe this bears a closer look as you mentioned. Another informative video.
It looks like AMD and Nvidia are doing this since years. Saw a video from PhilsComputerLab about Nvidia drivers comparison for older cards and the results are very intersting.
Wow these modded drivers actually improve performance. Thanks man. The ones I tried just made Windows 8.1 and 10 work and didn't do anything for performance. I'll have to try these out with my hd 4850. Elite: Dangerous is pretty cool too.
try throwing them in crossfire. i have two hd4890s myself, i tried running them in crossfire once and observed some really odd things, like a scaling OVER 100% in just cause 2 for instance. and at one pound i think you can afford a crossfire setup.
Just gotta remind you that Competitive gaming settings only care, really, about the resolution. Turn off the shadows next time. To give people the TLDR of if this card is good with that done right, it is actually fairly alright considering i got about 60fps at 1080p with my 4870 1Gb 10 year old card. Just enable a 4:3 ress that is smaller and you got yourself a very very cheap entry-level competitive GPU for 60Hz. A bargain, despite the driver hassle you are forced to go trough for them with Win10.
for csgo, shadows can actually make a difference. because shadow blending can indicate the presence of a player, and this effect isn't shown if shadows are under medium.
There are still cards around that might offer better supprt and/or performance in CS:GO Basically anything that was supported for longer then the HD 4000 series. I've seen GTX 460's go for under 15€ and they should offer way more performance. Same goes for HD 5830/50's. (They even run on Catalyst 15.7.1 and Crimson 16.2.1 beta) But for that low price the HD 4870/90 should be instant Win. Just maybe not under Windows 10.
Nice find! We here are now using these for two 1080p monitor support in software development workstations under Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7. But as I remember, they even support older AA titles in 1280x1024 resolution quite well.
Tico2858: Nope there is no bottleneck.... The only time you will see a performance disparity between Ryzen and Intel CPUs is when testing with cards in excess of a 1080Ti... As otherwise the only games which show a difference are horribly optimised games like CSGO, and some outliers of around 5-10Fps. In this case there would be no performance gain at all.
why on earth didnt you give the fan oil? washing it with water wont do it it wont last long like it and giving it oil fixes alot of computer fans or any motors and i know that from expirence
then give oil to every fan that doesnt like to freely spin. and dont wash them i have killed 3 fans simply by washing them in water to get rid of the dust
I have tried that on this card. It made no difference as it would appear that someone had left an extreme amount of gunk in the fan. After a nice clean, and a full amount of drying the fan began to work again. I don't recommend it as a working method, but as a last resort it did work alright
This has actual great performance, especially comparing it to ncidia offerings at the time! One question though, would you be able to update the description to add the specific inf files that worked, it could save some people lots of time!
Have not even been able to watch it since youtube wants to load ads in 1440p on my phone and I'm on a mobile data connection, I think it'll be good though lol.
To fix code 43 error, you might be able to use atikmdag-patcher to fix it, it's the same error that crypto-currency miners have when bios modding, and patching the driver allows it to be loaded up properly. Great video as always, and it really makes me wonder just what this card could do with the latest drivers with AMD putting their full support behind it.
@@cskillers1 It might not work for all situations, and yours might be one of them, but basically you install the driver as usual, then reboot, and then run atikmdagpatcher as admin, let it patch everything it finds, and then reboot once more and if it does work then once you boot back into windows it should fully load the driver.
sadly just done that step by step and still no luck, will just go through bunch of different gpus drivers in the list which is not compatible, assuming that's what the creator of this video meant when said "going through either file one by one" , since i only have 3 .inf files there just like in the video, but each .inf file contains drivers for lots of different gpus
found another driver way though for my gpu which is mobility hd 4300 series, catalyst 13.9 via FLEM mod, gpu lost it's DX10 with this driver but in DX9 ice storm extreme benchmark gained impressive 15% boost to fps, was able to keep gpu's OpenGL with this mod, though if one would want to keep DX10 - then he would get no gains in fps at all and it would be just fake v13.9 catalyst info while in reality he will have 13.1
This is a very nice retro gaming card for emulators, since it's one of the last cards with an s-video out so you can connect it to a crt and use a light gun.
Every damn time I eat my food, your vids are often in my recommended. Seriously love your vids. P.S. I often loved that part where you dry your washed parts on that humble little shed roof, every time you wash those PC parts.
and to think i thought i was getting a good deal buying a radeon rx550 for £25 but this, ONE POUND?!?? its entry level gaming and older titles on high/medium settings at acceptable frame rates. its the one of the best value for money i've seen since... the last HD4890 video you did :)
Deprecated, not depreciated. @11:22 Also, what was the graphical artefacting visible in your E:D footage? @10:19 It looked like the texture of an impostor surface was being incorrectly rendered.
Can you tell me what .inf was the best, i would be pleased? After 3 days of trying to make this work i'm bit irritated as none of those files seem to work. I'm running Windows 10 anyway, just the right .inf file helps me a lot as i can do other things myself
nVidia supported their first line of DX10 cards longer than AMd supported their last series of DX10 cards. Talk again about longevity of team read over team green. And I still got a HD 4870 around that is still in working condition.
Stunning performance in GTA5 there. I have a 1gb 4870 in the loft. I always did think back in the day these cards were better then they were letting on. I wonder how far they could be pushed if optimised to the limit. Probably wouldnt even need modern GPUs yet.
After the GPU of my little brother broke down, I took an old HD4850 and put it in. While some newer titles won't even start, probably thanks to the old drivers, old titles like skyrim run perfectly fine. So, if you're in an extremely short budget, just take one of these, don't think about it and save the money leftover up for later, when you buy a better card.
The stuttering may be cause by the stacking page file on your ram, which cause the GTA V to drop framerates.Using Cache Boost helps alot in many games. Nice video btw.
I remember being able of playing Tomb Raider (2013) with an HD4850 and a Phenom II X4 965 without major issues under Windows 8, though. Terascale still not entirely dead!

Their girls look like mr bean with long hair
Not everyone can afford a house with a garden.
Fam it’s not like that
Love seeing videos like this where you tackle the issues and get it actually working!
Saw this on Reddit... Very impressive results! Subscribed :)
The backing track you used is phenomenal! Great choice, and I loved the video!
There are still cards around that might offer better supprt and/or performance in CS:GO
Basically anything that was supported for longer then the HD 4000 series.
I've seen GTX 460's go for under 15€ and they should offer way more performance. Same goes for HD 5830/50's. (They even run on Catalyst 15.7.1 and Crimson 16.2.1 beta)
But for that low price the HD 4870/90 should be instant Win. Just maybe not under Windows 10.
I should make a video about a really cheap rig with an old 17" TFT for
I always love your videos man. Especially these seemingly impossible budget builds. Fantastic job.
thank you Budget Builds, very cool!
Finally you come back with my favorite vidéo série
Been a long time since I heard the streets of SimCity music
Great work, really enjoyed the music when you were cleaning it
if u need jazz, u got squarepusher right behind the corner :D
You're lucky to be able to get a GPU for 1 euro, in Brazil it would probably cost more than £20.
Its amazing what it can do for 1 pound!
If you can make the drivers work for Every game you play
Yea I could go and buy a bottle of Coke for a pound
Nice find! We here are now using these for two 1080p monitor support in software development workstations under Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7. But as I remember, they even support older AA titles in 1280x1024 resolution quite well.
Yo the music had me feeling i was watching an old James Bond movie
SimCity music is very classy.
Oh that's where it's from haven't played much of those games but heard some good things bout em
Great video as always
I give you props it was a well put together video
can u start listing the other specs of ur pc when u do these vids in the description? only complaint I have awesome video
Should be in the description.
on that note, would these gpus run games better on intel cpus because of the higher clock speeds attainable?
Budget-Builds Official ok thanks man
Tico2858: Nope there is no bottleneck....
@@BudgetBuildsOfficial ahem.... Saints row and gta v
Sc 3k music ! Cleaning montage! Epic ! Wonderful editing sir !
Can it run Cry- oh never mind it can
thank you for giving life to forgotten hardware, subbed
why on earth didnt you give the fan oil? washing it with water wont do it it wont last long like it and giving it oil fixes alot of computer fans or any motors and i know that from expirence
I tried some oil off camera before hand, it made no difference to the fan at all.
then give oil to every fan that doesnt like to freely spin. and dont wash them i have killed 3 fans simply by washing them in water to get rid of the dust
I have tried that on this card. It made no difference as it would appear that someone had left an extreme amount of gunk in the fan. After a nice clean, and a full amount of drying the fan began to work again. I don't recommend it as a working method, but as a last resort it did work alright
didn't*
won't*
a 1 pound graphics card works better than my whole computer
This has actual great performance, especially comparing it to ncidia offerings at the time! One question though, would you be able to update the description to add the specific inf files that worked, it could save some people lots of time!
You and randomgaminghd uploads on the same day. You guys are the best!!!
slide man: Cheers mate
Can you please do a sleeper build with that CD player you had awhile ago that would be so cool
Tempting to do one at some point
LMAO I was that Royale Knight in the video, 7:09 - 7:13 I cant believe that wow lol
Can you respond so I can brag when you’re famous?
Sure thing... I'll probably still reply no matter what.
Should pop into the Discord and actually speak to our Lord and God, Mr Budget builds himself.
69 likes lmao
And so he did.
man he's pretty famous now :p
@9:37 Tom braider.. that's how i read Tomb raider when not separated between the words
Metal Shroud? Can I make it shiny? I`ll make it like a mirror like my 9600 GT :D
The mirror of the 9600 GT would more likely the HD 4670 :)
Impressive Job on this. Interesting that Modded Drivers can cause such a massive uplift for a GPU. Hope to see more stuff like this!
1 pound Graphics card
My country: actually... is 60 pounds...
lol in my shitty craphole of a country its $65 without shipping for a used one....
@@ABC-lf5ib how about $200 for australia....
Gotta love the cup of tea in every shot of your vids. We do love our tea.
Have not even been able to watch it since youtube wants to load ads in 1440p on my phone and I'm on a mobile data connection, I think it'll be good though lol.
Update: It's VERY good! It finally loaded in :)
Go on ads setting set it on 144p
I love your channel. Please don't stop.
To fix code 43 error, you might be able to use atikmdag-patcher to fix it, it's the same error that crypto-currency miners have when bios modding, and patching the driver allows it to be loaded up properly.
Great video as always, and it really makes me wonder just what this card could do with the latest drivers with AMD putting their full support behind it.
did not worked for me, are there some certain steps which must be made or no?
@@cskillers1 It might not work for all situations, and yours might be one of them, but basically you install the driver as usual, then reboot, and then run atikmdagpatcher as admin, let it patch everything it finds, and then reboot once more and if it does work then once you boot back into windows it should fully load the driver.
sadly just done that step by step and still no luck, will just go through bunch of different gpus drivers in the list which is not compatible, assuming that's what the creator of this video meant when said "going through either file one by one" , since i only have 3 .inf files there just like in the video, but each .inf file contains drivers for lots of different gpus
ugh sadly that's not what he did, don't know when he found many of .inf files, would happily go through all of them to find the working one
found another driver way though for my gpu which is mobility hd 4300 series, catalyst 13.9 via FLEM mod, gpu lost it's DX10 with this driver but in DX9 ice storm extreme benchmark gained impressive 15% boost to fps, was able to keep gpu's OpenGL with this mod, though if one would want to keep DX10 - then he would get no gains in fps at all and it would be just fake v13.9 catalyst info while in reality he will have 13.1
This card is now going for $75‐$90 in US eBay this days... thank you, scalpers snd miners...
Nice vid.
oh and 360p gang
144p
This is a very nice retro gaming card for emulators, since it's one of the last cards with an s-video out so you can connect it to a crt and use a light gun.

That cleaning process was more satisfying than it had any right to be.
I came too soon....

Every damn time I eat my food, your vids are often in my recommended. Seriously love your vids.
P.S. I often loved that part where you dry your washed parts on that humble little shed roof, every time you wash those PC parts.
Gotta love the shed

Awesome video man!
Interesting choice of gaming music 2:50 lmao 😂
and to think i thought i was getting a good deal buying a radeon rx550 for £25 but this, ONE POUND?!?? its entry level gaming and older titles on high/medium settings at acceptable frame rates. its the one of the best value for money i've seen since... the last HD4890 video you did :)
Love the channel. Keep it up dude.
Will do
That Streets of Simcity Jazz track is DOPE background music!
idk why i watch these budget pc channels even tough i have an hi end sli pc
I love your music choices
this is like the regular car reviews of computers
Back in the day I used to have a HD4850 together with a Athlon 64 x2 6000+. Loved it.
Deprecated, not depreciated. @11:22
Also, what was the graphical artefacting visible in your E:D footage? @10:19
It looked like the texture of an impostor surface was being incorrectly rendered.
That was a planet I think.
Great work! I like your videos
8:22 The Iraqi flag on your car! Nice! I'm one of your viewers from Iraq :D

Can you tell me what .inf was the best, i would be pleased? After 3 days of trying to make this work i'm bit irritated as none of those files seem to work. I'm running Windows 10 anyway, just the right .inf file helps me a lot as i can do other things myself
There doesn't appear to be a "right" one, you just have to get lucky, and hope it works from my experience.
Budget-Builds Official I see, it's trial and error..
nVidia supported their first line of DX10 cards longer than AMd supported their last series of DX10 cards. Talk again about longevity of team read over team green.
And I still got a HD 4870 around that is still in working condition.
Fantastic vid. Love seeing that thumbnail.
Cheers mate
Anytime
You love coffe, don't you ? great videos, keep it up :)
So, if you're in an extremely short budget, just take one of these, don't think about it and save the money leftover up for later, when you buy a better card.
this channel is fascinating!
Cheers
Is that simcity music? I swear that at 12:30 is from simcity 3000.
The stuttering may be cause by the stacking page file on your ram, which cause the GTA V to drop framerates.Using Cache Boost helps alot in many games.
Nice video btw.
You should do a video just on how to clean a graphics card. Like, step by step...If you have, I've missed it. Good work, btw!
I remember being able of playing Tomb Raider (2013) with an HD4850 and a Phenom II X4 965 without major issues under Windows 8, though. Terascale still not entirely dead!

Always love the videos but if you do another before and after could you show the previous FPS scores? :)
That 1 dollar graphics card is stronger then my old 200 dollar laptop
Interesting vid hamish
I knew that drivers are pretty much 50% of a graphics card's performance, but this is a pretty nice improvement.
