I’ve got a handful of these guys, excited to give them better care now with better substrate from the folks at USInverts you mentioned! Just had them on play sand until now.
It seems all they need is an incubator like setting and isolating to get the larvae to turn into beetles. The microclimate in the substrate must be very warm and humid. I am in a FB page for blue death feigning beetles, and more and more people are starting to breed them.
Thank you so much for being an inspiration for this wonderful animal. I got 5 of them in a 10 gallon and I love how they bring peace and tranquility to my life . I really enjoy your beetle set up. That soil/sand takes it to another level.

Hi Rus! The new tank looks great. I am currently setting up a terrarium which will house BDFB's (among other things), and I was wondering about something: I am growing live plants from seed and they are still germinating or very small. Should I be worried that the BDFB will munch on the live plants? I was planning to wait until they are a bit more robust before getting anything besides springtails. Thanks!
Russ, what is the house for the beetles on the right side of the tank? Is that a custom build or did you purchase it from somewhere? Been looking for something similar for a beetle hide for my tank. Thanks!
A viewer 3-D printed that, coated it with glue and a layer of sand, and sent it to me! I think i is based on a Star Wars building. Pretty fun little hide, and the beetles love it!

Is there any way to encourage the beetles to lay the eggs in one spot instead of scattering them? Mine lay pretty consistently but spread them all over their tank.
Hi Rus, about something ive been meaning to ask about isopods, is there a difference between cubaris "amber ducky" and cubaris "rubber ducky" isopods and can you replace the limestone with eggshells for them, and also do they eat cardboard and egg crates (the one used to hold chicken eggs) sorry if i ask a lot
From what I understand, there is some confusion because there is a species known as ‘amber ducky’ as well as paler rubber duckies called ‘amber duckies’ … not ideal. You can use eggshells for calcium, many people succeed without every using limestone. I am not sure about the cardboard/egg create, it I bet they would eventually.
I plan to get some of these little guys, but I feel bad about ordering wild caught beetles. Do you know if theres any places I can get captive bred blues? I’ve read that rainbow mealworms has captive bred beetles though I’m not sure if they are a good source. I’m doing a lot of research about them and other ironclad beetles, beetles are one of my favorite arthropods. If you have any suggestions that would be amazing!
My BDFB I got in November are all doing well, hoping I’ll get some larva out of them in a few more months. Thanks to this video I know to offer some dead insects!!
I had a question! We started with 4 Blue Death-Feigning Beetles (which we actually got from PetCo) and unfortunately one passed soon after purchasing it. The other 3 got along great in our 10 gallon setup. Months go by, and we see 2 for sale in a local pet shop. We purchased them and introduced them into the enclosure, but now we're noticing some possible aggression or maybe breeding actions. It seems one of the new, smaller beetles will not leave our bigger original ones alone. It keeps climbing on top of them and really bothering them. Is this something we should be worried about? Thank you!
They usually lay eggs in the soil, often buried. They will sometimes eat them if they find them. But it is likely that if you saw one egg laid, there are others.
Interesting. I have mine in some new England dirt covered by a couple inches of red desert soil for reptiles, and somebody has been making beetle babies (though there's also stinky darkling beetles in there, too) How hot do you keep your tank?
