    ---
    My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to Popa Falls Resort, in Divundu, Namibia! Watch part 2 of our trip here!
    I really enjoyed and would highly recommend this resort! They offer river boat rides and game drives, and have excellent service. They're also one of the few if not only black owned/managed accommodations in the area - owned by the Namibian government.
    (I'm not being paid to endorse them :)

    Kaylan, the Owambo wife,You're the testament of Malcom X, Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Nkrumah, Oliva Tambo... When you become proficient in the Owambo dialect.Your perseverance, self commitments, your struggle, tribulations and emancipation. The rewards is your culture, your custom of the Owambo.You're fulfilling the legacy of our forebears, the spiritual soul of the mother land.. In the old time, they broke the cord that joined us together, and you amend and restored it... In your own little way.With your unrelenting awareness, you forebears are looking down, observing what you are becoming. A source of hope and inspiration.In other word, you walk the walk as you talk the talk. You immersed yourself in taken back your culture, language and African person. The pride is immeasurably.So long Sis Kaylan, your hubby, and son.

      Yes, especially the hippos since they turn over canoes and attack. Every time we came near hippos we had to turn the boat motor off so not to annoy them.

    Thank you, thank you and thank you again!!!! You where so lucky to see hippos and that one crocodile !!!! When we were up thee in 1985, we saw neither. Only goats and we ran over a lamb and had to pay, even though the herder did not look after her herd. That was life, and we accepted it. My motherland and all its people are so beautiful!!!

    • @AfroAmericaninAfrica
      @AfroAmericaninAfrica  7 років тому +1

      Wow, you were there in 1985? That must've been fascinating!

    • @barbarablattler1305
      @barbarablattler1305 7 років тому +4

      Yes, those were the days! We had managed to get a long weekend off together and off we were. We had to take everything along. We got a detailed road map from the then Department of Roads and Works, and that helped us a lot. We left very early in the morning and by Lunchtime, we were in Rundu. We could travel all along the river. We stopped at the RC mission station Andara and visited the Church and also went past the hospital. We saw children and adults with sleds drawn by oxen or donkeys, but we say no game. You must remember in 1985, we had a war on our border. We were in our late twenties and were not interested in politics at all. We were heading for the Popafall Restcamp which fell under the then Kavango Administration. Eventually, we reached a “Y” intersection. I read the map and said: take the right one, he decided no, we must go left. So we eventually crossed Bagani Bridge where we were stopped by soldiers who wanted to know where we were going. They let us pass, and off we went. On we went and did not reach the restcamp. We passed the Armybase and know we knew that we were lost. He drove into the camp and asked the person in charge if we could overnight there, but of course, because I was a woman this was not allowed. Now the sun was nearly setting and there was a curfew, nobody allowed on the road after sunset. It was arranged that the soldiers would let us pass Bagani bridge again and eventually long after sunset we reached the camp. We were allowed to occupy any of the bungalows. Ours was so nice! It hat a bedroom and a veranda. No doors and windows that you could close. Just openings. There were 5 beds with very clean mattresses, a cupboard and mosquito nets in the bedroom. On the veranda we had a gas stove, a gas fridge and even a gas deep freezer. A table and 6 chairs. That was so nice! We did not expect any luxury. There was a fireplace for grilling outside and the camp guard even lit the fire in the evenings. Ablution facilities were clean, but had to be shared with everybody. It was all so basic, but we came there for the beauty of nature and not for luxury. I think this camp does not exist any more.
      On top of being in such a remote area, we discovered the next day, that we knew all of our neighbours, even if we were not friends with them. After breakfast,we set off to visit Popafalls beach. This you could reach if you crossed Bagani bridge again. After some kilometres you turned to the right towards the river and then you reached the most beautiful white beach. Actually the white sand made a squishing noise when you walked over it. We had the most peaceful picknick there.
      The next day we were off to Botswana, Serondella Camp. We had to drive to Katima Mulilo and then south, where we crossed to Botswana at Ngoma border post. We had to go over the river and on the way we saw many elephant and buffalo. Again we reached a “Y” intersection, and again I wanted to go right and he left. So we went left and got lost again. We reached a camp with a few round bungalows and he decided that we had gone wrong. So he turned and got stuck in the thick sans. We were doing this trip with a little Datsun 1400 pickup. We tried everything, but to no avail, we did not come out. Then came the highlight: A Landrover with some Botswanan soldiers arrived, and they wanted to know what we were doing in their camp. We explained our mishap and they started digging and within minutes we were free. We offered them beers, we offered them money, we offered them oranges, they declined all and said: “your thank you is enough!.” This episode I will never forget. We got on the right track and had to pass a village called Kasane to the entrance gate of Serondella camp. There they did not accept our money and we had to return to Kasane. As the banks were closed, we went into the only hotel to exchange some money. That done, we went back. In Serondella camp we picked a bush under which we could put our sleeping bags and then set up camp. We could not leave it alone to go the bathrooms or anywhere else, because the baboons would come and steal. The bathrooms were damaged by elephants and baboons. The camp was not fenced in. Also everything very basic.
      We stayed there for a day and returned the next day to Popafalls camp, and the next day back to Windhoek where our jobs waited for us. That was all very exciting and wonderful. These days people and especially tourists expect luxury wherever they go.

    I love your vlogs. It's a great experience for me to see other parts of the world. I'm surprised you're so afraid of the hippos and crocodiles. I would think you have the courage to go to another country to live that you'd be more adventurous. I'd be afraid to move to another country. Just relax and enjoy. ( easy for me to say ). From the comfort of my bedroom. Such a nice loving family, and your son is so cute. I loved when he was beating on the drum.
