    Hi Sam. It's not the flywheel that's the problem causing no slow running on these 45 chassis, but they are far too high geared. If you wind the controller fully up you will see what I mean.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Yes you are right about that too - but they're not overly quick - you would see better torque at slow speeds without the flywheels, but I'm glad it has them! :D
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Generally the Class 45's all ran with blue roofs, but a few classes of loco's based at Toton went through some "customisation" as did a few loco's based at Stratford depot. Stratford got a reputation for painting a few Class 47's with silver/grey roofs and large logo's and one class 47 carried a large Union Jack I seem to recall. For some reason this was the only class 45 to get the grey roof and the stripes down the side that were reminiscent of the stripes painted on them when they carried a green livery. I saw this loco a few times on services around Leicester and in my spotting days classed them all about a year before they all sadly got withdrawn.

    These are excellent value for second hand models. I picked up a similar Bachmann class 40 in blue for only 120AUD (61.72GBP) last year. As to the white roof, certain BR depots painted variations of BR blue, such as Finsbury Park painting white windows on their Deltics, Stratford painting grey or white roofs, and many others adding stripes, window surrounds etc. in white to make several variations of non standard BR blue.

    One thing that I notice is the lack of air tanks slung underneath the battery boxes. These were a feature of the Class 45s and 46s in the 1970s and 1980s.
    I have a number of "Peaks" in OO gauge from Mainline, Replica Railways and Bachmann, and they all have the air tanks present.

    I have a class 44 - (44008 - 'Penyghent') - related to your Class 45.
    A beast of a model. I liked the fact that the 44's were named which I think gave them additional charm.

    4.25 If you like 'gigantic' you could try Heljan's 0 gauge version. 475 mm over buffers, weighs 4 kg, and don't worry about rice puddings, this thing can pull the skin off St Paul's Cathedral. Tower Models of Blackpool still have a few left if you're interested.

    The class 45 diesel is well done by Bachmann.and yes, even this engine does have directional lights..and a NEM shaft for the coupling of your choice. I did use MÄRKLIN short couplings, no problems yet.Many greetings from Germany.The buffers are movable, that makes it easy to couple buffer to buffer.

    Hi Sam since I last watched this I bought a Bachmann class 44 and 46 and a Mainline class 45, it has a split head box. Enjoyed seeing this again my modern 44 and 46 have lights so that's good. I paid $235NZ for the Bachmanns which is about £117 each. They are heavy and not bad on the old crawl. Anyway keep up the good work as usual

    Hi Sam. I think the 45 is a very reasonable model. Other than for a loco that is designed as a shunter, I am not that bothered if it can't move at slower than walking pace. I just don't like their top speed to imply that they are rocket powered, a problem that lots of 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 loco models used to have, and some still do. Lets face it, the 08 was geared for a top speed of 15 mph, or later 20 to 25 mph. I prefer locos to be smooth runners, which the twin flywheels ensure. As far as pulling power is concerned, whish full sized loco can pull 30+ coaches and how many home model railways in "00" have room to have 12+ coach length trains. An 08 could pull in excess of 1,000 tons, but only at a slow speed. It was geared for power, not speed. I have noticed that the price of modern coaches is creeping up on the £100 mark. Much too much in my opinion, when you can get cheaper locos. Oh well, rant over. Regards, Alan.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Thanks a lot Alan - yes that's true actually, and this certainly isn't a shunter. Thanks a lot for the info - I agree, the price of coaches is getting a bit silly!

    I think this Class 45 deserves a B! :)
    I love the details around the model, especially the separately fitted parts such as the windscreen wipers! I also love the shade of blue contrasting with the yellow and the white roof. I also love the fact that this diesel has 16 wheels in total and that's quite a lot of wheels for a diesel. I wish more of the wheels would pick up power since there's a lot of wheels on this loco but still, it's an amazing model! :D

    Used to be loads on midland main line , used to see a lot at sheffield then about 1980 ish they started turning up on coal trains that ran from wath on the woodhead route past my house to barrow colliery , never saw a named example on the passanger trains but loads on the coal trains ,
    The manchester regiment was one notable because i had the main line model at the time,
    The backman looks a huge improvement on the mainline model with it's can motor and fly wheels,
    The mainline model had a pancake motor with a train of cogs that took drive to three wheel sets on one bogey , it was an abomination and needed cleaning a lot, i nearly keeled over when you said £ 69 but i didnt realise it was a much better chassis.

    Hi Sam, I have this loco to, and it’s great, I love the colour as it’s not strictly BR Blue, and with the Roof colour along with the matching Line at the base, just makes it look ever better, pulling BR Blue/Grey coaches like you had, just brings back memory’s of back in the day. Great Blog as always Sam and Thumbs Up 👍 for this Loco. Tip on Heljan, it’s a Danish company, so you don’t sound the “J” so announce it like “Hel ‘e’ an” exchange the J for an E, so to speak, don’t worry, I have always said it like you did for years, till I contacted them recently for some extra Buffers that had broken off my own Heljan, and they corrected me on it. constructive criticism nothing personal my friend. Hi Sam great review of the Bachmann class 45- and yes they were faults both major and minor with the initial examples - BUT they are a vast improvement on the old the Mainline/replica offerings but the latest Bachmann 45,s are far better still , and I really cant wait to see the Heljan model as the Hype will have us all believe they are going to be awesome !!- I had the real privilege of driving these magnificent beast,s in anger on the main line and they really were a damn good loco- they would pull anything anywhere and covered some vast mileage,s in the process - it was a sad day indeed when they were all withdrawn ! 😢😢😢

    You know, Sam, the acid test for ranking is if the engine above your rank you actually like better and the ones below what you are ranking you don't like as much it's a good review on the other hand if the statement above isn't true then you need to have a rethink. If you got this train for 60 pounds then you did really well. I like this diesel, but, it is 2020 and there is no excuse to not have running lights. For me, lights really bring a train to life. The crewman in the cab is brilliant. I wish more models had that.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому +1

      That's true in a way Ray - but liking a model doesn't necessarily make it better than others! For example I prefer this to the Hatton's class 66, even though the 66 was hands down the best of the two models!

    you say how it's a modern loco despite the box but people do forget that 00 gauge model railways have changed very little over 20 years. The Hornby class 31 & 50 for example have been around for about 15 or so years & haven't been updated at all (even though hornby command a god awful price on them because hornby). In the realms of 16mm live steam, there have been more dramatic changes & updates in that time. Smaller prototypes can be mass produced now as live steam models, Laser cutting & 3D printing have revolutionised kit & scratch building & control of trains has evolved as mass market radio control systems evolve yet 00 railways only seem to get more expensive. Honestly, I'd take the money that I could spend on a bachmann bird cage & buy a 16mm kit of a Ffestiniog coach. Virtually the same price

      @@SamsTrains Yes Sam, the old-styled Bachmann boxes were either miscommunicated between Company and the Printers, so the contents were not always described very well. Especially noticeable were the box photographs on the inner slip card. These rarely showed a loco from the same time period or with the same detailing. At least Hornby used a photo of the loco on the box after illustrators stopped painting the box designs, and is almost a lost art form.
      This brings us, bang right up to date with the recent announcement from Hornby, about the possible production (in two sizes) of this years catalogue cover artwork as a limited Centenary poster. This shade of BLUE used on this version of 45s and other locos was the best. I personally preferred it to the standard blue they decided to keep. The colourists out there that love art will know, that on the colour chart, blue and yellow are complementary to each other. I always thought these two shades worked well together overall.

    With the roof fan that looks like it hasn't been fitted properly; it just looks like the gap on the other side has been filled in by the paint that they used to spray the roof after installation. Run a hobby/craft knife around the edge starting on the side where there is a slight gap. It should scrape the paint out of the gap and leave a clean line all the way round the Fan cover. :)

    Interesting figures you gave. Seems Bachmann changed the loco's innards at some point. I've got a Bachmann Class 46 which I think must be older than your 45 as mine's windows are poorer (a separate insert). I got it secondhand really cheap (I think £34) cos of a fault which happily for me was easy to fix. Mechanically it seems identical to yours, but it weighs more (637g) and it's drawbar pull is higher too at 125gf (1.225N). But that was at motor stall - it doesn't wheelslip so I'd never dare overload it out on the road. It does have very good slow speed control, though I am using a PWM feedback controller. Everything works pretty good with one of those.

    This livery of the class 45 really is beautiful, the most attractive one this engine carried in my eyes. I do own Mainline examples in green and BR blue. But I think the white roof and stripe (or is it light grey?) really makes a difference. The detailing for me is not decisive. What is top notch today probably is outdated tomorrow. The Mainline locos were pretty good in their day but compared with today's products they are rather outdated. But still I could not care less. As long as they represent the prototype reasonably well, I am happy enough. The same with the lights: If they do not work, so be it.

      @@SamsTrains No the bodies are different - didn't Bachmann acquire the Mainline tooling? The buffer beams are on the body and not the bogies, something they have been criticised for a lot. The mechanism is very basic too with power driving just two axles on one bogie. The Bachmann is streets ahead although the Mainlines are over 35 years old! I'm rather surprised Hornby have never done one, it was after all a very important loco on the Midland and cross country routes and I think even ventured on to the West Coast and ER at times.

      Thanks David - supposedly this doesn't use the Mainline body, though I did expect it to!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

      I have a Replica Railways Peak which used the old Mainline body and I also have a 1st gen. Bachmann Peak and they are not based off the same body. It was retooled.

      Yeah and a br class 35 diesel name D7101 or Bear came with D199 on a trial run with the limited. D199 broke down with a train of oil tankers and complained for a fitter but a signalmen threat him with his tin opener. Bear stayed on sodor. And Spamcan was sent away in disgrace for be nasty and rude.

    Quite a handsome loco. I really do like this style of diesel. It looks very sleek sliding along. Also let's just settle on light grey for the paint haha

    You got this beautiful diesel for more than a year and this is the first time you run it?
    Which is your favourite class 45 or class 66?
    Nice video

      haha I have many like that waiting to be filmed! The 66 is the better model, but I prefer the 45! :D

    The 45 is missing it's seam line on the nose ends, a big fail from bachmann. It's very noticeable if you compare it with the real thing. Bachmann changed it on later models. Nice video

    This is probably one of the biggest British Railway diesels you've ever owned! I never seen any British Railway diesel with a total of 16 wheels. Usually I see them with 8 or 12. But not 16!

      The class 40 has sixteen wheels too, same arrangement. The two at each end are just weight bearing, non driving.
