JCM, I have watched every one of your episodes. They continue to impress and get better and better each time. They are perhaps the best and most complete and comprehensive histories of any band. Simply phenomenal. I feel that I know the Led Zeppelin story very well thanks to you. Perhaps it will become a college course some day! Incredible work. You are an amazingly gifted person yourself.
Wow, thank you so much. I am humbled by your kind words. Glad you are enjoying the journey! If this was a college course, i'd call it "UnMeatLoaffed Studies in Led Zeppelin" :) Have a great David, your comment made my day!
Many thanks JCM for your meticulous work. Having grown up with this band, you are certainly educating me! I encourage you to develop your music. Your song Gerrard street dreams is invoking the spirit of the 70's which brought forth such a bounty of music. It is a great piece of music in the spirit of Zeppelin and I hope to hear more from you.
Thank you very much! Comments like yours make my day and motivate me to keep going. I have two solo albums that in due time, i wanna share the story on here and maybe sell them as a 2CD set :)
Beautifully done. It shows how excited the new members were for joining The Yardbirds. This documentary also fills in that transition period between old and new. It was an absolutely incredible transformation and the crucible of touring Scandinavia brought the members of the New Yardbirds together in a way that’s almost magical. Because after that tour, they were ready to make history and record their first album, Led Zeppelin. Within a year they were the biggest rock band in the world. Unbelievable!
I am so glad you enjoyed it! Their first album changed the world and definitely built on that Scandinavian tour's momentum. Imagine the conversations in that van...
@ I was really sad when The Yardbirds broke up. It didn’t make sense that their incredible stream of music had ended. Yet as soon as The New Yardbirds with Jimmy Page was announced, that news transmuted into an eagerness to hear their rumoured upcoming album. When I went to the record store looking for it in January, 1969, I was looking for The Yardbirds. Instead, almost magically I was guided to discover Led Zeppelin looking through the new releases. The front cover was shocking. The back cover showed Jimmy Page but with new people. Bass player Chris Dreja took the iconic photo. So THIS was the New Yardbirds. But who or what was Led Zeppelin? I was probably one of the first people, if not the first to buy a copy of this unknown band. As soon as I took it home and listened to it, I thought, “Holy shit, The Yardbirds have finally realized the potential I always knew they had.” It was the same Energy that brought us together, even though there were now different members - again. I let my friends listen to my album - which then instantly got “borrowed”, and subsequently made its rounds to all the parties. In fact, I never saw that LP for the next six months, and I ended up buying another copy just so I could hear the mind altering power of the music. By the end of that year, with the release of Led Zeppelin II, they had gone from complete unknowns to the biggest group in the world.
Happy Birthday!!! February 25th? Hope you've had a good one, pizza and coffee included maybe? That's my idea of a BDAY. What was your soundtrack for the day?
@ January 24. The Song Remains The Same Soundtrack 1976 Mix as I first got for my 10th birthday in 1986 along with Robert Plant’s The Principle of Moments as well as Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here (an album I have 10 copies of and first got for my 9th birthday in 1985 and is my favorite Pink Floyd album) and the Queen 40 boxes 1 and 2 which my dad got me (box 1 is 1973-76 and box 2 was 1977-82)
You are great at what you do. I would have said you're the best at what you do...but no one, I know, does these little documentaries the way you do. Every great band deserves a documentarist (?) like you.
I am honored Chris, your comment is uplifting and made me smile. THANK YOU for sharing this. Can't wait to take you guys to OLYMPIC STUDIOS for Episode 3!
Fantastic research again. From a Led Zeppelin history perspective, this is unchartered territory. Thank you. Incidentally, my old office workplace in Newcastle, England, was just over the road from the Mayfair Ballroom where the band (as I'm pretty sure you'll know) played their first ever UK show on October 4, 1968, billed as 'The Yardbirds'. Sadly, the Mayfair was demolished in 1999, having hosted some of the biggest acts in rock history over the years. A plaque at the site commemorates the classic venue and the first UK 'Zeppelin' show.
Wow and Newcastle's City Hall as A LOT of history too. That's just crazy. Too bad the Mayfair was demolished :( I googled the site, is this the street where your office was? (The Mark is on the old Mayfair btw) Thank you for watching. freeimage.host/i/2LacMPe
Seriously JCM, if you don't get to put together any follow up to Becoming Led Zeppelin, then there's no justice. The work you put into these mini documentaries is astounding.
Hey David! Hope you're doing well. Thanks so much man! I certainly enjoyed travelling to Scandinavia for this one, the sights, the landscapes, imagining what the conversations inside that van were!!
In every Led Zeppelin book that I've read the Scandinavian Pre-LP Tour was always mentioned but the deep dive that you give it is jaw-dropping, meticulous and so entertaining to us Zep Fans - I can't wait for Episode 3 at Olympic Studios where Jimi Hendrix recorded with Eddie Kramer Engineering🇬🇧🎸🔥🎤🎹🥁❤👍
Thank you very much Louis, this was my intention to expand on such a briefly discussed topic in their journey and i am glad it feels this way, a deep dive, into a vital chapter to their musical development. I'll take you guys to Olympic Studios!
I'm pleased to be able to watch this episode just a few hours after you've posted it... I usually take many days. It's gratifying to learn so much about my beloved Zeppelin from someone like you, who equally loves Zepp. Interesting, true facts, without gossip and the usual nonsense that many use as clickbait. I'll tell you something cool, I found a book written by Eiji Ota and published by Shinko Music Japan, where he talks about the more than fifty instruments and equipment that JPJ used during his years in the band and the enormous influence this had on Zepp's sound. It's not a biography, and I believe it wasn't published outside Japan, which is a shame, I think Jones fans would enjoy the book. Thank you for your tireless research and production of these amazing videos, Mr. Jose. See you soon! 👍👋
Oh Marcia, now you have to scan that book so i can read it hehehe, that's so cool. I've seen many clickbait videos with John Paul Jones on the cover saying "we were not friends", and it's absurd, the content is clearly done with A.I cloning his voice UGHHH, it saddens me. Always a pleasure to have YOU check out these adventures, you are a true Zepp fan :)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I get really angry when I see these trashy videos, I block these channels, I think it’s an insult to Jonesy, he’s a gentleman and never criticised his bandmates. Another awesome episode,Jose! Loved it. I learn so much. That beginning was killer too! So much work putting these episodes together. Thank you so much ! 👍❤️ Ps I love the sprinkling of comedy you toss into each episode. It always makes me laugh! 🤣We have the same sense of humour. Cheers👍
Thank you TIM! Glad we share the same humour, man the Ladybirds gave me so many ideas lol. The fact they have the word Birds in there, was like such a coincidence to the Yardbirds. The Scandinavian landscape is inspiring to say the least, you feel like they were Vikings setting their path to riches. The land of the Ice and Snow!!
Awesome information in this video! In the summer of 2005 I took that bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö. I stayed in Gothenburg, then went to Stockholm. Sadly, I was a year late, Polar Studios closed in 2004. But I took a long walk from my hostel to see the building. I let my imagination run wild. Amazing to also think about how many great acts played in Sweden in the late 60’s. I would of loved to seen Hendrix jam with Hansson & Karlsson, I’m a big Bo Hansson fan. I guess Hendrix liked Bo Hansson so much that he wanted him to tour and join the Experience. Crazy huh? I’m looking forward to episode 3! Keep the train a rollin’!
Oh wow, you were staying up there, that's awesome. So you took Øresund Bridge into Malmo and then drove up to Gothenburg, that's quite the distance. Was it too long to Stockholm afterwards? Walking there was the best choice, would have done the same, you were in the middle of rock history! OMG i didn't know about Bo Hansson, i will check out his discography. They jammed in late 67 at Klub Filips which is close to the INSIDE CLUB, i learned something today thanks to you!!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories yes, took the bridge, at Malmö took a train to Gothenburg, then after my stay there, took a train to Stockholm. It was only a couple of hours, not bad. Yes, the history was important to me. Yeah, definitely dive into Bo Hansson. My dad drove the importance of him early on to me. There’s a lot of mystique, magic, talent, reclusiveness (he didn’t like the fame of Hansson & Karlsson their albums were starting to be pressed in other countries, then Lord of the Rings got real popular, he didn’t like that), to Bo Hansson. John Bonham used Slingerland drums and apparently Zildjian cymbals on the first album and then switched to Ludwig and Paiste respectively for drums and cymbals.
Hmm interesting, this would explain the extra bright sounding cymbals, Zildjian's tend to do this while Paiste's are warmer. Copy and Paiste (sorry had to go for the pun)
This must have been a tough one to make. There’s so little to go on besides some very basic facts of when and where they played in Scandinavia and I suppose even if you asked the 3 surviving members they probably wouldn’t remember much from those early weeks either.
