- The EQT Coil Grounding Kit (CGK) is designed and engineered to provide a simple solution for a common problem on the MQB EA888.3 Platform.

The Problem:
The factory cam cover is soft aluminum and is prone to stripping regardless of how careful you are when removing or installing the OE stud. Your ignition coil uses this stud to ground the coil circuit and any amount of damage can occur in a weak ground which may induce unnecessary knock retard or reduced spark energy, even if the threads are only mildly damaged.
The bolt is often removed and installed when servicing the ignition system or performing engine testing. Such as replacing spark plugs, ignition coils, performing compression, or a leak down test, etc.
VWAG in their infinite wisdom also uses oval bolts which exacerbates the problem the more times they're removed and installed.
The Solution:
By isolating the ignition coil ground to its own circuit and grounding it to the chassis, the need to remove the top nut is no longer necessary and the risk of having a weak, loose, or damaged ground is removed.
While you still need to remove the stud in order to remove the ignition coils, you don't need to "double nut" it anymore in order to ground the circuit -- preventing the chance of a weak circuit.
Without the need for a stud on top of the bolt, you can easily replace your existing hardware with round M6x1.0 thread pitch bolts instead of the OE oval hardware.
OE Hardware is N91229201 and measures 45mm UHL (Under Head Length) and 12mm OHL (Over Head Length). To replace this stud with an appropriate size bolt you would want M6x1.0 x 45mm

I can't wrap my head around why VW didn't do it like this in the first place - awesome content! I love the channel!
It’s funny… I was thinking the same exact thing.
This is one of the most underrated 'mods' you can do. Dave's a genius for coming up with this while at EQT. My idle is butter smooth compared to before.. and single hex cap bolts to remove the coil packs?? what a DREAM! Thanks for the DIY walk through! Even if you're stock, do this, makes life so much easier and properly chassis grounds the coil packs with thicker gauge wire that's far better insulated. Great stuff from EQT
Just stripped one of mine so I'm glad I'm not the only meathead with a wrench out there lol. Super helpful. Thank you!
Hello, my name is meathead, and i stripped my cylinder four coil pack retaining bolt.
Hello, meathead!
The reason for the triangular cross section of the bolt is to prevent it from vibrating out on its own because it widens the overall diameter slightly, making an extra tight fit. It's quite common (although often oval shaped instead of triangular) in automotive bolts and effectively replaces thread lock for frequently removed parts like these coils.
Nicely done my brother...I call them stupid n ugly just like you do...such pain. And all who might be watching this video and reading my comment. The ground for anything that uses them are very very important... Check dem out all the time cuz any loose, broken, missing whatever tends to be the issue no matter where in the car is why it doesnt start or whatever problem u might have... Be bless
Just finished the install like yours, pretty easy and quick, thanks for the notes you added in your video. It helped a lot.
I did this install today when I replaced my coil packs, and now I have a P2311 “Ignition Coil D Secondary Circuit” EPC. R.I.P.
Great video - very helpful during the install!
Did that resolve itself? I think I read that you have to disconnect the batter before doing this or you’ll get a code
@@rambow70 I replaced my plugs after the code and it went away
Ordered mine should be here in UK Monday 15th. Have a little misfire so thought I would put this grounding wire on see if it helps.
Great videos keep up the good work.
Hi, did this solve your misfire issue? As I'm having the same problem and replaced everything I could apart from the grounding wires
Any updates on that issue from either of you? I’m wondering gif you tried this and it worked?
Hope this solves my high cylinder pressure/misfire issue, only thing holding me back from making power
Very well done!!
Thanks man! Someone has to keep the R content going now that you have moved on to bigger and better things! lol
Thanks for video. Looks like your coolant is at the minimum line.
Another great EQT product Fantastic
Thanks, doing this on my R before I go stage 2! Would’ve been cool if they made the ground wire a different color.
Thank you for the video, convinced me to do the job myself.
you mentioned you may monitor for knock reduction. in your case, did you see a reduction?
Would electrical grease benefit any of the ground connections?
Great video!
An auto shop I took my MK7 GTI to when my IS20 turbo blew, completely stripped out the block threads by tightening the ignition coil bolt too much. They never told me either. I found out after checking stuff weeks later after I picked my car up. Pissed me off to be honest.
Since then, I have heli-coiled all of those spots, and haven’t had an issue since. I have a video on that if anyone wants to check that out on my channel.
I broke a purple insert when re inserting in the sensor.
Will I be fine without them?
Where can I order just the purple piece
Just installed mine exactly like the video and I threw a bunch of codes. Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit, Lost communication with abs controle module, and lost communication with vehicle dynamics control module. Any idea what or why this is?
Is it possible you de-pinned the wrong wire?
Excellent.... Time to order some parts. Hopefully helps with misfire issue I occasionally have.
It’s quite possible. Even if it doesn’t, getting rid of those ground wires is worth it!
@@EVERYTHINGcpo yeah I got eqt stage 1 mk7.5 gti. occasionally get multi-cylinder misfire/cylinder hide when I go WOT and the dsg kicks down especially on a low tank. Gonna do this CGK, replace the Coil connectors, check the harness. Relatively inexpensive and gives peace of mind. I'll tackle the fuel pumps when I go full E
Car drives fine 99% of the time. About time for carbon cleaning also.
@@jonathanmatthew5451 did the grounding kit solve the problem? I'm had bad misfires and hide cylinder code for cylinder 3 one night under WOT I started at the coils but right as I was going to replace them the screws for the coils were loose and I can't get the nut off the bolt so I assume it's the ground not being so great causing the misfires
@@poyo3582 my issue seemed to be a weak hpfp. When I went stage 2 and upgraded to autotech internals my issues disappeared even on a low tank.
@@jonathanmatthew5451 so I guess it is the grounding in my case cause I already have a upgraded hpfp
nice and clean install!
Thank you for video!!!gonna order mine now..are those bolts steel or aluminum thay your putting in?
Gleason Stravenue
Nice install
Great vid, thanks alot
Did you get the 4K0 or the 8K0 kit? Which is the proper kit for the MK7 Golf R?
Yes exactly which kit, 4D0 or 8K0????
Do you know where I can find one of those little ground wires??
Great video. Looks like you need a little coolant also. 😉
Oops, is maybe your thermostat housing leaking? Just had this very problem and VW wouldn’t replace it on warranty as my ‘19 R is tuned. Common problem for the thermostat housing to leak, though.
Awesome channel and has helped me so many times already.
@@stephankaeser8939 these cars consume a bit of coolant
You think that is consuming coolant, wait till you see me drink coolant. My GTi threw me out the drivers seat last time I hogged the coolant. Put me in the back and said I was her b*tch!! I'm someone's b*tch😲😲. From that day forward I knew it was meant to be.
When inserting the new ground pin, I'm stuck dead in the water. Any tips? In the video, you just say it needs a little pressure, and voila it's fully seated. I can only get the pins maybe halfway into the connecter, certainly not seated fully.
My recommendation is to look at the pins and make sure nothing is bent or over extended in a way that is preventing it from going in all the way. Also check the place where the wire is crimped to the pin and make sure that isn’t bent into a shape that is preventing insertion. You can clean it up with a pair of pliers if needed.

Does this work on 2016 1.4t. ?? the coil part 4d0 matches the kit
will that ground spot be on a mk7 gti as well ?
@@rkiller56pbs44 it should be. Yes.
Have you had any issues with those bolts vibrating themselves loss over the time since you installed them? just curious!

What can I use if I don’t have the de pinning kit? Bobby pin?
Yeah that would work. Anything thin that can slip on each side and compress those tabs. I know folks that use tiny drill bits as well.
curious what depinning tool i need if i don’t wanna buy the whole kit
It’s just a very basic dipin tool with two narrow flat blades. You can go to any auto parts shop and get a multi tool version for a few bucks if you want to do that. Otherwise people have done it with small drill bits or paper clips! :-)

what was the name of that clamp tool you used to hold the bottom nut in place so you can loosen? thanks
I used a needle nose vice grips.... like this one. amzn.to/3rQ0RtB

Two feet of high voltage coils grounding through engine bay to random body ground point? Do you think you're smarter than VW engineers? Good luck!
yes
If it works out that if save VW $0.01 they will do it as that’s millions in savings.
Toyota will do it even if it saves $0.01 per 100 vehicles.
We are only interested in performance.
Smart thinking, but its now grounding through the plugs to the engine, now a question. Where is the engine grounded to? 😉
I broke a purple insert when re inserting in the sensor.

Just order a new unit as doubt you can just buy the purple bit.....by unit I mean but a whole new car 😜
jk can but replacement quite cheap
