I love what gpd is doing in the handheld market in terms of design. This egpu having an internal power supply makes it very tempting on the go rather than a clunky one dock setup.
Love my surface pro 9, for my eGPU solution a went with a Node Titan case and a sapphire nitro 6700xt I got on ebay for $250. Hard to beat the price to performance and its plug and play just like in this video. Only thing is that the case is quite large, but does take any full size card so that it doesn't become a paperweight in the future. I like that solutions like this exist, I just wish there was a way to upgrade them.
Wow, this freaking rules! Here I am thinking I'm the only Surface Pro 9 user who decided to buy the GPD G1 in the world. Haven't done a ton of testing yet - I was messing around a *little* with VR and was pleasantly surprised that it, ya know, worked - but pretty happy with it overall. The form factor and ease of use is pretty great. (The sound is kind of obnoxious, though.) I'm also really happy that you noticed the external monitor vs. internal SP9 display was so drastic - that's something I thought I noticed with my naked eye, but hadn't actually put numbers to. Amazing video, consider me a new sub and fan!
I just need my surface to be able to edit videos on da Vinci resolve (when I use effects it can’t handle it) . Would this be a good solution or are there cheaper alternatives?
O man the fan solution is and has been top on my mind sense I bought my pro 9--- Excellent I will be waiting for it, I want I want I want one wow super nice.
I've been working on a solution for a while, and I think I have designed the perfect device in terms of ease of use / performance / quietness. will be releasing more info and a way to purchase soon.
Would be a perfect docking station if they move the card reader to the front and put a network port in the back. Also wish it had a CUDA capable GPU (nVidia) for work related tasks.
Nice to see how it pairs with the SP9 Pro and I should see similar results with my laptop. I just ordered one to go with my Asus Zenbook Flip with a 12500H. I have been using a Razor Core X eGPU box with a RTX 3070 in it, which is more a static solution. The GPD G1 will give me that portability on all fronts.
Looks cool! I’m curious if the throughput of the IO on the back of that gets throttled at all especially if using the internal laptop screen… Would you be able to test that by chance?
I liked that device you used right at the end of your vid! What was that, I'm assuming a deep cooling system that works with a metallic cooling pad?? I noticed it had your own brand logo on it too
Can you do a video on the Adlink PocketAI eGPU paired with the Surface 9? They look like half the size of the g1 but not sure how it will hold up with gaming.
Just ordered one to enable my Valve Index to work on my Surface Laptop since the Thunderbolt ports runs exclusively through the integrated graphics adapter. 😕
My surafce pro 9 is stuck with an old intel gpu driver, every time i upgrade it via intel, windows will restore the old driver. Does this happen to all surface pro 9? Whats the fix?
Love your videos! You have a different approach and should have way more subs! Just a note though, as a gamer, could you please report FPS not just scores, especially with external vs. internal display? Thanks, and that fan is B.A. 👌👌
I've had the surface pro 9 & razer chroma egpu setup connected to a rtx 3080 fe but I am getting bored of how many wires there are & mentally planning on finding a gaming laptop to mod my razer chroma & turn into a power efficient gaming pc.
I've just got, an GPD G1, with standard cable that came with dock - performance is cool, but it wont deliver enough power to my Surface Pro 8. So surface is discharging, while being plugged in to GPD G1. Any ideas how to boost charging speed, to match pro 8 consumption? Any settings on the GPD itself?
A few years ago when intel was making a big deal about thunderbolt 3, I am sure this was one of the use cases, small docks with mobile gpus. But for some reason everyone abadoned the idea and pushed their overpriced egpus with proprietary conectors that were only compaible with like 5 devices. It's a shame because something like this could have helped sell ultrabooks to casual gamers and graphics designers who want a thin and light laptop but without sacrificing graphics performance.
It is a shame that GPD have had previous quality control issues with supplying completely different inferior spec parts to those advertised and then having data leaks that would get a company anywhere else in the world massively fined.
If I route in with my meta q 3 and use it for virtual desktop will this help for making the screen quality better?? (this is based of gpu) I have 0 latency currently with surface alone but I want to increase quality. I also want to use blender in virtual desktop, no problems so far, but want blender to run smoother. I don't really care about VR use other than this and just want blender to run smoother, I am not so worried about renders. What do you think?
Looks good, but I think some AI applications like Stable Diffusion and maybe some video up-res-ers require Nvidia GPU's. For those with AI applications in mind, it's something to double-check. There's a lot of magical thinking around AI right now, but Nvidia genuinely seems to have an edge and to be more widely supported, particularly when apps are in beta.
This is true... although there are a few forks which support stable-diffusion on AMD. It IS way easier to work with AI applications on NVIDIA for sure though and agree with your points.
I've noticed that when I connect my Surface Pro 8 to the GPD G1 using USB-C Thunderbolt 4, the charging icon appears, but the battery drains quickly. It seems like charging isn't supported during data transfer. I'm curious if this is just my issue or a common problem.🤕
I am debating on buying the z13 flow with a 4050, running a surface pro with my old 1080 eGPU, or running a surface pro with this eGPU. It seems like this one is less finicky to deal with? Only thing is my 1080 in the closet is free... Really tough choice here. NO messing with an eGPU with the z13. Anyone have some insight here?
Definitely don't need to game everywhere I go. Just wasn't sure how finicky the eGPU is for daily life of constantly unplugging it and plugging it back in.@@josher14
I do not understand the market for these external GPUs. They are quite expensive compared to a Surface. If I want to play games then I buy a gaming desktop. Sounds like a toy to me.
You can't maintain a gaming PC with you, if you travel. Or it's very convenient to use on the go slim and light laptop, at home connect the same system to this videocard-dock.
As a long time surface user, this video was a goldmine, ESPECIALLY THE ENDING! PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THAT FAN DEVELOPMENT!!!!
