  • Joan Trumpauer Mulholland was already accepted as a student to Tougaloo College in Mississippi when the Freedom Rides began. Mulholland joined others, including her friend Stokely Carmichael, on a train bound for Jackson, Miss. She, along with many others, was arrested and shares details of her experience in prison following the protest. Archive photos courtesy of The Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Foundation.
