Beautiful... thank you Mick. I, for one, feel privileged to have had your music as the soundtrack to my life since the early 80s. "Love Song" still thumps through my chest like a heartbeat every time I hear it. And "New Gold Dream" takes me straight back to the summer of 83-84 in 🇦🇺 when I would lie on my bedroom floor with my dad's huge headphones on listening endlessly in awe. I really feel as Gen X we were blessed with the best music... Also - 0:54 The whistle... "They're gonna jail you for that" 😂
Thank you once again Mick. Much appreciated by me and countless others. There's something completely beautiful about that demo version of A Brass Band In African Chimes. The version that eventually got released is stunning to say the least but it's such a different feeling with just the keyboards. Hope you eventually put up a longer version for us to enjoy?! All the best and stay healthy. ✌️🙏❤️
Thank you Mick for doing this. I worked with you guys back in 1987 for several months whilst you were doing Live in the City of Light at Castle Sound Studios. I still remember those days with the minds. Wonderful times, which this brings all back. Thank you for letting us all into that little window in time once again.
Mick, this was beautiful! Hoping you will post more and more including some of your keyboard playing which you did recently with SFY. Your keyboard sound is absolutely iconic to us fans so to hear you play them again is brilliant! Can I request the PyaM outro 1987 version please 👌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙌
Andy here is Colins effort of the outro to pym if you ask me Colin is a better keyboard player then the past 3 keyboard players simple minds have had since MM departure!! ua-cam.com/video/i89DUxWDEbE/v-deo.htmlsi=QphVN6lccG-rugOl
I started listening to SM when I was about 8, so that would be about 1984. By listening to Reel to Real and Empires, I was motivated to learn all the wee keyboard parts, so I was lucky enough to get a wee crappy thing that you could only play one key at a time. All these years later I'm still doing music in a big way. And that's mostly to you Mick, for the great music and the inspiration. Thank you 👍
Absolutely Amazing when they was in there prime once upon a time Tour unfortunately I missed it still plays on my mind especially when seeing 👀 videos like this
Thanks Mick, what a joy. I spent all my early, mid and late 80's listening to Simple Minds, all the way back to Life in a Day in '79. The instrumental movements you (Jim and Charlie) created were pure genius in every sense of the word. Saw you for the 1st time at the Milton Keynes Bowl '86 Once Upon A Time with The Waterboys supporting, and WOW what a great day. I'm so pleased I've found your channel as I can't wait to watch all of your other Vid8 memories on the road with the boys and Robin Clarke (and what a gorgeous voice she had too). Thanks Mick and all the best 👍👍
Thank you Mick! Great to see these 'behind the scenes' snippets from mid 80's Simple Minds! I consider myself privileged as well. Privileged that I lived trough those times with your magnificent music. Tunes I love and enjoy still today! So yeah, a big thank you! 🍀🍀🍀
Thanks Mick, pure gold dust! Had the classic SM albums on play all weekend. I really appreciate your gesture of putting out this content. Priceless stuff and happy days!
The soundscapes you've given us all are such that words can rarely describe. That's what drew me to the band. It must've been so very special to have been a young "Ned" seeing ocean and skies surrounding you. Those grand horizons that influenced you are everywhere in Simple Minds music while you were in the band. "Brass Band" is one of my favorite instrumentals ever and you've found another voice that only you can create. Nothing like it.
Mick, thank you so much for the musical contributions to the soundtrack of so many of our lives. You are a keyboard and accordion player unlike any other.
Having read Derek's recent book and the insight into the level of ongoing feeling between himself and Kerr its seems a grand reunion is further away than ever . With your good self , Derek, Brian (or big Mel) still fit and well is such a shame one big ego is stopping something that would be magical. To listen to the 81- 84 albums with the original writers , keyboard , drums and bass doing those albums justice live would be something memorable indeed. We can only hope.....if not we have the talented trio of "The Minds" . Hope to hear more from you Mick and these videos are Gold . Many thanks.
I can only imagine what it must’ve been like on this tour. I’m a younger fan (born in 2006) but I know in 85 and 86 y’all were on fire and at the height of y’all’s popularity.
This is so good of you Mick and I’m sure there are many of us looking forward to more insights like this and of course any pieces of music you might add.
Really great to see these clips thanks! I was encouraged by some friends to "come along and see this band" back in the eighties. Well I went along and my first thought on hearing SM (already playing as we walked in) was - wow, this isn't quite what I expected!
This is brilliant, im sitting here greetin😢 😂, at the footage but Mick the music you chose just does it for me, out of the many instrumentals this nailed it!!! THANKYOU so much for sharing these. X❤
24 hours ago I was listenng to some of the songs you wrote watching Simple Minds at the Star Casino, Gold Coast Australia. 8th time I have ssen them live. First time back in the UK in 86 at the Wembly Convention Centre then a bit later at MIlton Keynes Bowl. I believe that you may have been there on both occasions 😍
This means a lot to all the 50-60+yo fans who were all making their journeys out at the same time. Me & my pals travelled from Manchester to Paris in 86 to Zenith for what became the first live album. I was 17 , an apprentice and had never been abroad before. Looking at all them young faces now, my own kids are similar ages
Mick,do you remember the gigs in the SFX in Dublin in 1984? Curtains closed,"Someone up the likes you" playing on tape, the band gradually take over behind the curtains playing along live to the song, then the curtains opened, life never got any better...
Thanks again Mick for this new upload! It makes me feel very nostalgic. What an incredible atmosphere, and what a beautiful tune it remains. You always brought/bring a special magic, not only in your amazing compositions but also in your footage. I hope many more videos will follow.
Wow. That’s amazing to watch Mick. Memories of the great days and better times. Great to see Robin Clarke. Remember your gig at Milton Keynes 1986 and the whole crowd singing happy birthday to her. One of my favourite ever gigs ❤️
Thanks Mick. Reminds me of the time I lived in Geneva and saw you guys play in Zurich, where you were headed. At end of the 80s met Jim on the street in Lausanne and was so speechless couldn't have a proper conversation with him. Perhaps he was hoping to bump into Bowie who lived up the hill ...
I just saw Simple Minds for the second time last weekend in Australia, the first time was in 2017. Both were fantastic shows, and after watching your nostalgic clips, it makes me wish time travel was possible, back to pre 1985 times to see the original line up. While I was around then, I was just a little nipper learning my ABCs. Was too young to notice.
Thanks for sharing your recorded memories which is giving us all a glimpse of your past times with the band, and showing us a view of them that's rarely seen. It must be quite nostalgic for you doing this.
Good job mate. Your creative input to the band with your Roland drum machine for demos was extraordinary. Nice how you incorporated "A Brass Band In African Chimes" (my all-time fave Minds track - a b-side no less..lol) into this video montage. Cheers from Ontario, Canada! - GJ
Mick, love the video and the sounds. Takes me back to the barrowlands when i watched you and Derek intently during each and every song at every gig. I still maintain those barrowlands gigs were the best I've ever been to in my life. Incredible experiences. Thank you.
Very interesting to see Scarecrow being played on the bus in the context of the "sell out" accusations with OUAT. I was happy for the band and so proud of you all when I was watching you walk onstage at the Kaiser Convention center in Oakland. I got to go along for the ride from 81 and watch the crowds grow and grow and while, yes...OUAT was a different album than SITR, it made so much sense given what was on the radio. Why wouldn't you want your record to sound like that? That's what you were hearing, Let's Dance, Born In The USA....they sounded amazing and you got the right team for "the album we wanted". OUAT sounds smashing even today, never tire of it. I sat next to an older couple who had just found Simple Minds and got to hear those great arrangements of Speed, Catwalk, American. Just brilliant.
These videos are fantastic !!! Thank you so much for sharing them!!! Would be fantastic to see more, brass band in African chimes in the background , awesome!!! You are a legend 😀
I’m a fan and in a fans’ mind, a band this big is unreacheable and are in another dimension or something. But because of these tapes, shots and moments, as a fan I realise that you could be human after all😅. Great footage. Nice to see you guys just being yourselves although looked like Jim was having some kind of stroke. Keep the clips coming if you can, awesome to see. Thank you.
Nice one Mick - good to hear you're going to continue posting these. A rare insight into life on the road and a group of (back then), friends. Love the synth soundtrack too!
Wow, another great day ! Just discovered your videos Mick, it's like a barn find... pure gold. Always thought SM music fitted film, especially the instrumentals. Got shivers when I started to recognize Brass Band in African Chimes. They fit the slo-mo images immaculately. Better than the background noise... 😅 Do you remember how the name for that track came up ? Thanks Mick for the effort you put into this ❤. OUAT was my first tour I attended.
Checking the tour dates around January 1986, it seems to be the trip on train between Stuttgart and Zurich (just see the first video Mick uploaded and this one, Tuttingen train station, minute 2 second 28. If they played on January 30th in Stuggart, and on February 1st in Zurich, probably this video was shot on January 31th. Only my guessings !!
Paul causing trouble with his whistle. 😂 Love these clips MM have you got any of being in the studio recording?? The Sparkle demos are still some of my favourite today really gives an insight how the songs where put together.
Mick I know its been said 100's of times but I honestly can't listen to any album affter SFY. The atmosphericall magic is gone. Even listening to these pads on this post, evokes something musically otherworldly which is the key ingredient to the bands musical prowess.
Lovely stuff👏👏👏 Thanks so much for posting. In the final clip I guess it’s Jim’s brother in the middle. Who is the chap opposite Jim next to the window please?
Mick it's a pleasure to see this. Wondering what your thoughts are on Taylor Swifts "Anti Hero" chorus being almost the same as "Glittering Prize" opening bars? Much respect, Scott.

@@mickmacneil1 You're welcome. Not sure how I found it. Sadly, it's possible it popped up when I searched "Simple Minds reunion" or something like that. Of course, I know not to hope for a reunion, but I had been wondering what that Trevor Horn record was like. Anyway, I'm very grateful for your videos and, especially, the new music you're posting with them. I have to think my album was hugely influenced by you and Simple Minds, Bjork (Live at the Royal Opera House), the Cardigans, Husky Rescue, Rush (yes, I said it) ... even thought it probably didn't sound like any of them.
Hey Mick - first off, thanks for this. It's lovely to see a document of life on the road back then. Can I ask you about the synths and patches you chose for New Gold Dream? There are so many beautiful pads across the album that I think your (musician) fans would love to know what inspired you to pick those particular sounds and how you managed to find a musical palette that not only fit so beautifully into the mix but also defined the sound of the band. Or you can just tell me to bugger off. Thanks! Ken.
