  • GTPAL nursing explanation made easy (GTPAL twins explained) with examples and quiz of practice problems for the NCLEX exam. In this video, I explain the GTPAL acronym, GTPAL meaning, and solve some examples. My examples include calculating GTPAL for twins and triplets. GTPAL stands for:
    Gravidity: number of times the woman has been pregnant (THIS INCLUDES CURRENT PREGNANCY, MISCARRIAGES, ABORTIONS and *twins/triplets count as one).
    Term Births: number born (alive or stillborn) at 37 weeks gestation onward (*twins/triplets count as one)
    Preterm births: number born 20-37 weeks (alive or stillborn) (*twins/triplets counts as one)
    Abortion: pregnancy losses before 20 weeks (counts as a pregnancy…so would put in gravidity as well)** if baby died after 20 weeks it is added under preterm or term not abortion.
    Living children: number of children living (NOTE: twin/triplets counts individually)

    Hello Everyone :) Thank you for watching the video. Quiz links are below. I just want to clarify GTPAL so everyone understands:
    *Gravidity*: number of times the woman has been pregnant (THIS INCLUDES CURRENT PREGNANCY, MISCARRIAGES, ABORTIONS and *twins/triplets count as one).
    *Term Births*: number born (alive or stillborn) at 37 weeks gestation onward (*twins/triplets count as one)
    *Preterm births*: number born 20-37 weeks (alive or stillborn) (*twins/triplets counts as one)
    *Abortion*: pregnancy losses before 20 weeks (counts as a pregnancy…so would put in gravidity as well)** if baby died after 20 weeks it is added under preterm or term not abortion.
    *Living children*: number of children living (NOTE: twin/triplets counts individually)

      Hello :) Yes, it is, but I'm receiving a lot of messages about questions regarding how to count abortions, living children, preterm and post-term etc. I wanted to pin this to the top to hopefully help answer those questions because I can't respond to everyone due to the high volume of questions I receive, and I don't want people to be confused lol.

      Hi Sarah!
      What if the patient is currently pregnant at 38 0r 39 Weeks? Is the pregnancy counted as full-term? Or does the pregnancy have to be delivered whether alive or stillbirth before it would be counted as term?

    Hi Sarah! I just returned home from taking my OB Exam (and like clockwork with every exam, I reviewed with you leading up to it and just prior). I know I had atleast 5 questions re GTPAL/TPAL/GP, that .....had I not reviewed your video, I would have got wrong. That would have been a 90 right there. In short, thank you for taking the time to extend your nursing knowledge and gift of teaching to so many of us. You have been a blessing to my nursing education over the past two years and I am truly thankful for your channel. You are a wonderful resource and well- almost a part of my family! My 12 year old comes home from school and walks pass my office and says Hi Sarah! lol.
    In closing, you are a blessing to many lives, nurses and patients alike. Thank you again. You are amazing and very much appreciated! I dont know where I would be without you and Armando Hasudungan! :)

      Hello Crystal :) I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this very amazing comment. Comments like yours REALLY mean so much to me and let me know that my videos are helping people study. I'm so glad that you got those questions right on your OB exam. I can remember those same type of questions myself when I took OB....so I knew you all would encounter them as well. I'm very honored to be part of your family lol...tell your family I said HELLO :) Thank you for allowing my UA-cam channel to help you along your nursing journey. I wish you the best and remember I'll be here for NCLEX (the last stop before you're finally a nurse). Again, thank you for the awesome comment :)

    so for the term birth you said you would count 37 weeks and on. Then for preterm wouldn't that be 20-36 weeks? Because if the baby was 37 weeks I want to know if I count that as term or preterm. thanks!

    • @RegisteredNurseRN
      @RegisteredNurseRN  7 років тому +5

      Hello Miranda :) I hope the semester is going great for you. Yes, if the baby is 37 weeks or more it is considered term. If the baby was born BEFORE 37 weeks (20-36 weeks) it would be classified as pre-term. Many people get this confused because they recently changed the definition by dividing "term" into early-term, term, full-term, late-term, and post-term.
      For instances, "early term" are babies born at 37-38 weeks. Full term are babies born 39-40 weeks, and late-term are babies born at 41 weeks. All are considered term...not pre-term. You can read about it here from a reliable source: www.marchofdimes.org/pregnancy/what-is-full-term.aspx or here health.usnews.com/health-news/hospital-of-tomorrow/articles/2013/08/29/lowering-premature-birth-rates-by-offering-bonuses-imposing-penalties
      I hope that helps :)

    Okay so I'm doing my prerequisites for my BSN, it's my first year of college and I'm currently watching your playlist of the NCLEX review and I am clueless but I'm slowly learning. The reason I'm watching the playlist is because I heard this exam is very hard according to people on youtube and I want to know everything by the time I have the NCLEX exam which is in about 4 years. I will be watching at least 2 videos a day! Is it bad that I don't know much? Or you will know all this after you graduate? Why aren't you a CRNA you know so much !!!! I am glad you make videos!

    • @RegisteredNurseRN
      @RegisteredNurseRN  7 років тому +1

      Hello Jason :) It is very awesome you are already studying and exposing yourself to nursing material...every bit helps. When I was in the same position as you, prior to nursing school, this NCLEX stuff sounded like a foreign language. I remember thinking "is this stuff ever going to make sense?"....well it didn't make sense until I started nursing school, and then sometimes I was still lost haha. However, towards your senior year of nursing school it starts to come together as you apply the theory you learned from lecture into clinicals, but you just know enough to pass NCLEX (the basics about nursing). Then when you become a nurse you will feel lost again, but over time when you gain experience everything FINALLY makes sense. So, don't be too hard on yourself if you don't understand the material because it takes years to understand along with "real world" experience. I hope that helps! Again, thank you for watching my videos. I hope my channel can help you through your nursing journey! I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    Hi Sarah! Thank you very much for your video!! it is so helpful for me. I can tell you that i'm a chilean RN, and here in my country there's a weird "separation" between RN and "maternity nurses". There are 2 different careers for that, so at the university i've never studied Maternity nursing, just the basic knowledge (cuz "that's for Maternity nurses, not for us", my teachers told...). In my opinion, this is so stupid haha (and there's even a rivality between them haha incredible!) but whatever... So, like i said, your videos are so helpful for me to "fill this hole", and you're so clear to explain everything! i think you're an amazing teacher! :)

    • @RegisteredNurseRN
      @RegisteredNurseRN  7 років тому +1

      Hello :) Thank you for sharing this....that is very interesting how it is treated as two different careers. I thought maternity nursing was very interested, and I enjoyed learning about it in school...may be because I'm a mom and I think the whole birthing process is very interesting...so I was glad they included it in the program! I'm glad you like my videos, and thank you for your kind words, especially coming from a fellow RN.
