For the commenter looking for a cowboy knife, set the knife center filters to fixed blade and stagg and bone handle materials. Set price range if you like. There you will find several options including the boker cowboy crossdraw.

    Picking my favorite nit:
Out of all of the specs you regularly mention with any given knife, IMHO the least often mentioned, (but most important, insofar as regular everyday pocket carry is concerned) is weight. I wish that you would begin including this vital stat on each and every knife, as it is often a deciding factor.

Hey, I'm turning 70 in about 6 weeks and I'm an Opinel fan to boot. Mostly carry 6s and 8s. Maybe my gift to myself should be that 13. Love those two gentlemen's knives. Boker!!! Cowboy knife, I'd think something more hunting-like. I have a KaBar 1237 I bought at about 13. Still have it. Stacked leather washer handle, brass guard, nice steel finger retention pommel, swoopy looking blade, embossed leather sheath. Not as useful fore camping as I thought it would be. Love Thomas' suggestion for the Condor Lost Roman. I want one.

I spray yards for a living. I am handling chemicals all day including powdered iron. I use all of a container of chemicals I rinse it out then cut three holes in it. I used a knife with s35 and it got stains on it.

  • @kevinreese5656
    @kevinreese5656 Місяць тому

Dear DCA/Thomas: I enjoy restoring old, rusty, banged-up slip-joints, usually Imperial, Camillus, etc. I look for knives that are abused past usability, then I take them apart, clean up the hardware, sharpen the blades, make new brass liners and micarta scales, resulting in a kinda new knife. One of my favorite moments is revealing the make of the knife under all the grime: those old stamps really hold up. I've noticed that very few modern knives feature stamped manufacturing information-it's almost always lasered. This means that, when these knives are rusty and banged up in the future, someone restoring them will run the risk of removing information as they sandpaper and buff away the goop. Question: why do modern knivemakers almost never stamp the tang? Is there something about supersteels that makes such a process difficult? Thanks!

    Hi DCA (and Thomas)!
I'm going to my sister's wedding in the end of June this year, and want to acquire a knife that fits the occasion. I was thinking something along the lines of a gentleman's/CEO knife. However, I live in a european country where knives are, to a degree, frowned upon. So it has to be inconspicuous and 'non-scary'. Blade length at or under 3" would work well, and it would be preferable if it's without large, bold markings/branding. Deep carry pocket clip would be nice, but not neccessary a must. I'm open to both more traditional and non-locking folders. Budget is $200. Thanks in advance!

I personally picked up a blue damascus solstice (which you guys don't have yet) and have been loving it, but I'm curious to know if you and yours have gotten enough hands-on time with Ocaso's knives and enough feedback from customers to develop an opinion on Ocaso as a company. Hi David: Blade length is often the focus when discussing folding knife size, but where the fifth pocket is concerned, it’s handle length that determines whether the knife disappears in that pocket. It seems that 3-inch handles are the threshold. What can you recommend that’s in that range of 3 inches closed, with a slim profile handle, like the Spyderco Ladybug or Case Peanut?

David, I have a very specific set of requirements to complement my "forever knife" , a Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. I'd like a drop point blade in super steel(magna cut?), round about 3 inches, in satin or stonewash ,cross bar lock, Micarta ,G Ten, or carbon fibre , bolsters ( Cannot warm to metal handles!) and washers rather than ball bearings at the pivot as I just like the silky feel. Also I'm not big on "holey" blades preferring thumb studs.
Price is not so important as I do my crying upfront. Any good suggestions?

Hey DCA, I'm fairly new to the knife world and i don't know that many good value knives or knife brands and was looking for some options. I'm looking for a premium feeling knife around the $100 - $250 mark though if its a bit over that's fine and, due to knife laws in my country, ideally it would have a blade under 3.35 inches. If you do answer this thank you very much and I love your content.

@@joshuaschoonyan3263 so is carrying a small pocket knife in a lot of places in fact in some countries pocket knives are incredibly illegal and more regulated than skateboards and the people who carry pocket knives are seen as criminals for no other reason than they carry a knife, which is the kind of stigma skateboarders have had to put up with for literal decades and is something this channel has brought up tons of times whenever they talk about “non-knife”. People and how a lot of them get uncomfortable when they see something as innocuous as a classic sd Swiss Army knife.

S90V is a great steel but for a special knife focusing on a super steel with edge retention feels a little lack luster. At that price range there is plenty in play.

    Hey DCA,
A question from the far away land of India for you. My nephew will turn 18 next year so i need to get him a good knife (fixed or folding) that is an upgrade to the leatherman skeletool kbx I gave him some time back.
    Considerations:
    1. Legality: No assisted opening knives as they are illegal in India. Also blade length should be less than 9", blade width less than 2". The smaller the better for an 18 year old, but something over 3" and maybe around the 3-4" blade length mark.
    2. Budget: 50-100$
    3. Given the budget this might be tough, but preferably made in the USA, if not this is not a deal breaker.
    4. Something with a full 4 finger grip. He's a big lad (6'3" which makes him a giant in India :O)
The reason for my Batman level prep time is because I would prefer to buy it now, keep it in US with a friend and bring it back to India myself when i visit the states in a few months rather than going through the hassles of importing, during which some items never reach the buyer due to "safety concerns".

Hey DCA. It is well known that Buck has an amazing heat treatment process getting the most out of their 420 steel thanks to Mr. Bos. What other manufacturers out there would you recommend based on having a high quality heat treatment comparable to Buck?

For the archeologists, I'd pick the Morakniv Mora of Sweden Fixed Blade Knife 2.95" Carbon Steel Polished Chisel, Yellow and Black Rubberized TPE Handle, Plastic Sheath - M-12250, not the Razel. I own the Mora chisel.
