    Hey great video, very helpful and straightforward but I just have one question. How do you connect your headset to a router? Do you need an external adapter in order to plug it into what would usually be the Quests’ charging port? If so, wouldn’t that make it non-wireless?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому +7

      Thanks so much, glad you've enjoyed it! You don't need to connect your Quest to your router via wire, just your PC needs to be wired to the router, the Quest can be connected via Wi-Fi only.

    Thanks! Any chance you could do a tutorial for us Quest 2 users on how to get Valheim VR working through Virtual Desktop? Or is using a link cable, along with both Virtual Desktop and Steam VR all running together the only sure way to get games like that to recognize you as a VR headset?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому

      You’re welcome! Yeah so for Valheim or any other VR title the process is the same whether you’re using a PC wired headset like the Valve Index, or a Quest/Quest 2 with an Oculus Link cable or Virtual Desktop. It should work the exact same no matter what method of transmitting data, wired through Link or wireless through Virtual Desktop. Hope that helps!

    • @AnotherCoyote
      @AnotherCoyote 2 роки тому +1

      @@VRManCave No, sadly I only got Steam to briefly detect my headset despite having both the link cable active and Oculus app recognizing the connection. I ALMOST got into Valheim VR, when I loaded it up? I saw gloves in the foreground and virtual environment surrounding me on all sides, but then something failed, and despite re-starting the devices and my pc multiple times, i haven't been able to get SteamVR to detect my Quest 2 every since.
      Any suggestions? Please I could really use any help if not a tutorial on getting into Valheim!

    • @AnotherCoyote
      @AnotherCoyote 2 роки тому +1

      @@VRManCave Thanks for the replies, also I SOLVED the problem! I had to connect the cable and go into SteamVR's virtual mountain top room (with the plushies and companion cube in the cubbies?) and from there select my virtual desktop from the big screen theatre there and go into my PC and play Valheim through steam that way, and instead of saying 'no headset detected', the SteamVR mini window shows a headset and controllers icons in it.
      Valheim is still buggy and I cannot clearly read the text in the graphics settings at all, but the game works! I still am forced to restart it once and a while to fix movement issues, but otherwise, I'M IN!! :)
      Valheim is now THE BEST VR GAME! Unless someone has made a decent 6DOF Fallout 4 VR walking, ducking, and running experience with Kat walk S loco or vive trackers, then it will be one of TWO best VR games of all time!

    Super clear & to the point video!
    My use case is using PC + windowed apps on multiple (virtual) screens.
    Since I would be mostly sitting and using it, I'd not mind a more stable wired connection to my PC / GPU.
    Does VirtualDesktop have wired access support or is it wireless ONLY?
    If it is ONLY wireless connectivity-
    Could you recommend any other Desktop projecting app for Quest 2 which will work wired (link cabled Headset to PC)?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks so much man, really appreciate it! Regarding your question, you can either use the Rift/SteamVR version of Virtual Desktop to use it wired. Alternatively, if you connect your Quest using the Link cable(or a third party one), then you can just launch, resize and reposition desktop windows for free using Oculus Home(which is already installed), although with this method you need the actual physical monitors too, unless there's a way to set up virtual monitors in Windows directly. When you connect the cable you should see a prompt in your headset saying Oculus Link is Available. Just click on that and it should open up Oculus Home, where you'll see a menu bar at the bottom, which you can use to access your desktop monitors.

    This may be a little late for the party, but if you do set your PC up like this, do you have to plug the Ethernet directly into the router or could you possibly use a wall Ethernet outlet to get the same effect?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  Рік тому +1

      Not late at all. Ideally you would have it plugged into your router yes. It might work with an ethernet wall adapter but you will likely experience fluctuations based on the wiring in your house, so if someone were to turn on a dishwasher or washing machine, you’ll most likely get latency and stutters.

    Do you recommend Virtual Desktop for VR through Shadow on my laptop? I have 50mbps 5ghz wifi on my laptop, but my Quest 2 connects to my 2.4ghz WiFi automatically I believe. I also can't split my WiFi bands.. what do you think? Love the videos, you got a new subscriber!

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому

      Thank you very much Diego! 🥰
      If you're talking about Shadow as in the Desktop streaming PC I think that it won't work ok, because you have too many components adding in latency, which for VR would translate most likely into motion sickness. However, I know they're working on something, where a client for VR exists, which you install directly as an app on your Quest, but as far as I know it's still in the works
      Regarding the Quest and 2.4 GHz, here's an idea: maybe MAC ban the Quest on the 2.4 network from the router, so you force it on 5 GHZ?

    • @jrichr01
      @jrichr01 2 роки тому +1

      I had a similar issue. I’m no IT genius so will explain in layman’s terms based on my experience:
      I was running a modem/router combo & wasn’t getting great signal upstairs. Considering there were around 22 devices connecting, figured an upstairs extender would be helpful. It split the device connections (same network) which helped signal strength, minus my work computer that I use upstairs. It kept connecting to the downstairs modem/router so signal was weak.
      Problem was I too could not split the 2.4ghz & 5ghz signal so got a separate router. The new router let me establish separate networks so connected my work computer & my kids’ gaming laptops to run on the 5ghz network. Problem solved.
      Bottom line, look into getting a router with the ability to create a separate 5ghz network & I think you’ll be good to go. I use a Netgear Nighthawk which recently dropped in price with Best Buy from $120+ to like $71. Might be a little older tech now but works fine for me lol. Plus the app lets me manage & pause signal to devices which comes in handy if I’ve gotta get my kids’ attention. I’m going to see if it’s stable enough to run virtual desktop. It should be ok but will test now that I’ve seen this vid!

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому

      @@jrichr01 wow thanks so much for sharing that man, and yeah splitting networks is essential for ensuring a stable connection, otherwise devices will switch dynamically between 2.4 and 5ghz which is definitely not ideal for wireless VR. Cheers mate!

    I'm likely being dumb here... but do the VR games actually play in full 360° mode? I did watch your old video as well as this one, and both times you've shown a flat panel then this kind of curved one. Would be nice to know if when you boot up the game it actually works as a full vr game?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Josh! In the previous video I was just showing that you can also play non-VR games on a huge cinema screen, but native VR games as well as games that have both VR and non-VR modes will run in full 360 just as any native VR game that you've played before. Virtual Desktop simply transmits the data to and from your Quest 2 wirelessly, but otherwise it behaves exactly as if you had your headset connected to your PC via an Oculus Link cable. Well, I'm not gonna say I've tried that, but if I did, the quality would be the exact same 🤣. The issue isn't the Quest itself, but rather the quality of the source itself, which is fairly low resolution. If you want your movies(adult or otherwise) to look better, you'll most likely need to download higher resolution versions locally, or maybe find a streaming service that offers higher quality than the well known free ones out there. @@hammerhog22 sorry for the very late reply, UA-cam doesn’t notify me of replies to existing comments, stupid bug.. anyway, AirLink definirely works way better now than it did when I made this video, but Virtual Desktop still has a big advantage when it comes to flexibility, changing settings on the Fly, better desktop environments and other things. If we’re just talking about VR gaming, I’d say they are somewhat on par. VD had the AV1 codec which is great, but on Airlink you can push the bitrate much higher and get better clarity provided you have a decent router.

    This video worked great, I was able to get the desktop working perfectly, but when I launch games, they stay in the desktop mode, meaning if you were to just take your headset off and stare at your monitor. @VRManCave  2 роки тому

      Glad to hear the video was helpful, thanks for watching! Regarding your issue, if you're trying to play games that have both VR and non-VR modes, then most likely you will need to go into the game settings and set the rendering mode to Oculus/SteamVR. Another thing you can try is to start the games from the Virtual Desktop menu instead of directly from your Desktop or Steam, that should launch them into VR mode directly. Let me know if that helps and we can continue troubleshooting if it doesn't. Cheers!

      Thanks so much man! Yes you do need the Oculus PC app, as that has all the drivers and runtime to be able to use the Quest 2 on PC. Your graphics card still needs to meet the minimum requirements for VR games regardless of if you go wired/wireless, as your PC is processing everything, so it's the same as with any other flat game, if you can't run it at a decent FPS, nothing will really fix that 100%.

Some of the Quest 2 games are cross-buy, meaning that if you have the Quest 2 version, you get the PC VR version too for free. For native PC VR games like, let's say, Half Life Alyx, you will need to purchase it on Steam.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 роки тому

      It's a tricky question. It shouldn't be a big issue though if your computer is connected directly to the router via wire, but it depends a lot on this like how thick/what material your walls are made of. 20-30 feet is not that much, so I doubt you'll have issues if the computer is wired to internet.

We tested it out when it came out a few months back, but we hit some performance issues but with no patterns or symptoms. Mainly we got black bars from time to time, but not all the time, and we decided just to let the technology fine tune a bit, because it was just released. In the meantime we haven't got back to it, and being Virtual Desktop users from before, we tend to rely on what we know as humans✌
