This was such a great album. Darryl Jones, Kenny Kirkland, Omar Hakim, Branford Marsalis: what a band! That’s a concert film you should check out: Bring On the Night. Lots of great interviews with all the band members.
Sting is simply an
extraordinary composer and singer.
My favorite Sting solo song, and album.
My favorite Sting solo song. The lyrics in particular are very good with all the imagery and analogies, and this song wouldn't have been out of place on a Police album. IMO, sometimes Sting can be a little too artsy and pretentious, but it works in this song.
Yes, this could easily be on a Police compilation.
This was a part two of Every Breath You Take with more subtle subliminal digs at his reluctsntly soon to be ex wife, whom he refused to let leave amicably by signing any papers for her legally. This deeper song "Fortress Around Your Heart" was about his departed wife too - yet with Sting more at peace attitudinally.... which to me is a lot less psycho and more manly to express what he's going through being deserted at the hands of his wife and only love - he is doing an artillery reprisal to protect his emotional boundaries decimated while the estranged wife is not under attack. He conveys the way it feels to her in the better way than the whole "oh can't you see - you belong to ME" kinda cringey stalker vibes thing that line maybe gives off to a woman who's just trying to move on with her life after him.
This album was huge. It made a lot of people easily forget Sting had ever been in the Police. As JP says, he won the Grammy for Best Instrumental that year (plus several others), beating out a bunch of very worthy competitors including Yes. In the YesYears documentary Chris Squire ruefully commented "It was kind of Sting's year..." 😄
That was regarding Synchronicity what Squire said, I thought. That came out the same year as 90125, in 1983. This song was off 1985's Dream of the Blue Turtles.
Great song from a great album.
Always loved this record. I remember it was the last vinyl I bought just when CDs were replacing records. Saw The Police twice and Sting once.
Stings vocals are insane on this song
Omar Hakim played with Alex and Geddy at the Taylor Hawkins tribute.
He really changed the drum part to YYZ and made it his own
I bet he did.. totally different drummer than Neil.
Great album, great song!
Fave solo Sting song
Wow. I had no idea about the musicians involved when Sting went solo (reminds me of Natalie Merchant...), now I am going to check out his albums beyond this one (I'm pretty sure this is the only solo Sting that I know...)
Good pick Rob. Thanks Justin
I hadn't heard this in awhile. Great tune, great suggestion.
Yeah, this is a great album. I haven’t listened to it in a long time either. Dig it. Did not know that it was recorded at Le studio so that’s cool
Did you hear any of the Buckshot LeFonque work that Branford did? You must, if not. Massive crossover projects!
Re Fortress: such a tight groove, and YES - Bradford's tone and entrances just rip at the emotions; so clean!
oh man forever ago I heard that stuff. Its been a couple decades by now I think.
Rick Beato did a great analysis of this song.
Phenomenal album, as is his Nothing Like the Sun album after it.
Was just going to ask if you've heard "Burn for You" off "Bring on the Night." Omar Hakim's solo is one of my all timers. My Hx of Jazz prof. used to play Fortress as we gathered for class. Artful sentimentality....that's the way to do it! Have you ever seen Wynton live? I Got to see him and band (orchestra) at an acoustically designed venue. Amazing! (Justinese) Cool Rxn!
Havent seen Wynton. Have seen Branford.
Unlike Branford, I don't dig Wynton and all the attention he gets. I guess the main thing is he was too much of a narrow minded jazz gatekeeper (his jazz history will not include a Keith Jarrett or John McLaughlin, imagine that). Both Wynton and Ken Burns while having some good points about chronicling the development over the 20th century, did a lot of damage by pushing jazz history as little more than racial identity politics for the mainstream public. Which is BS.
If you get a chance watch "Bring On the Night" documentary. It is a documentary of the prep for and of his first solo concert/album by the same name. The live performance of this is fantastic. Omar Hakim has a brilliant solo for "I Burn For You" in it as well.
One of the craziest experiments of assembling a pop band ever.
Looking back, I wonder if the downside was too much talent in one group. Still they pulled off quite the experiment. How did Branford navigate finding his place in this context? I mean he's such a monster player and performer, but here he has to carefully find small pockets and spaces in these pop songs to add color and expression. You know what I mean? Its just weird that Sting is showcased and Branford is the side man. I'm actually surprised Branford was cool with this for 3 albums.
By the way if you haven't seen it you absolutely must watch "Bring on the Night" which is on UA-cam. A documentary made while this band came together and prepared for their debut concert. Fascinating for any musician to watch.
Ive seen him talk about it. I think his jazz buddies were like ‘what the heck?!?’ also. Guy was trying to get paid that Sting money! Don’t blame him at all. Plenty of time to play jazz.
@@JustinPanariello oh I believe it, when the money's good and that would open other doors for him. Still for a high level performer it had to suck when he was touring with Sting to sit out like average 3 min 20 sec of a 4 min song for most of the setlist lol.
@@katskillz im sure he was fine lol
Great comment, never considered that. I'd wonder along with the $, if the chance for musicians to play with different great players esp ones they wouldn't normally would be attractive, especially if they all had a great feel working together
Exquisite
Sax by Branford Marsalis. 👍👍👍
It's a very good song ! I really love the first 4 solo albums by Sting. After that I lost interest.
Too Bad! You missed out on a great catalog of music. Sir Paul McCartney regards Sting as one of the greatest musicians/ songwriters of all-time. ❤
