About 3D dungeons: yeah, kind of ahead of its time, really. Just like Ultima 1 did in 1981, I guess. Just like nearly ALL JRPGs took inspiration for the Ultima series, and it shows. Then again, this one awesome shit giver saga's flagship isn't really an RPG, right? Nothing to do with the history of RPGs as it wasn't made in Japan! Right... 10 episodes worth of insights into "RPG history" and... It's all a moot point, really!
I'll be 40 this year and am still grateful to 12 year old me for saving up enough money ($75!) to buy this game. Nearly 30 years later and it's lost none of its charm. Kids raised on mobile games, the 3DS, or PS4 graphics would likely find this great RPG dated, maybe even archaic. Many of the games they love, however, owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Phantasy Star and the very forward-thinking folks at Sega.
I have been playing Phantasy Star and really enjoy it... While I do think it hasn't aged well in some respects, it certainly does have charm, and it got me far more invested than I ever thought I would be.
For me, it was a game my Dad got for himself, along with Ultima IV, when I was very young - probably around 4 years old. Despite being too young to play either all that well, I loved them and loved watching my Dad play them. At the time he wasn't able to beat them, the hidden door in the final dungeon alluded him, but with the money from my first job I rebought it and we finally finished it together, over 15 years later. Phantasy Star will always hold a special place in my heart and I believe it played a good role in my early development. This month, I got a hold of Ultima IV and played to completion for his birthday in memorance, so in a way I can finally say we beat that too. I don't think there's much around these days that kids can find a precious charm to with some subtle life lessons.

This is by far my favorite 8 Bit RPG of all time, and my absolute favorite Phantasy Star game. It was so very far ahead of it's time when it came out, easily beating out both the early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. It's truly a gem of an RPG!
I finally played this game during Covid 19 lockdown. I loaded it onto my Sega Mini along with all the genesis sequels and played the whole series sequentially. I was blown away by how much fun I had with the first Phantasy Star! I've played both first games in the Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy franchises and can say I enjoyed PS the most by far. I can only imagine what experiencing PS1 in '87 would have been like. So ahead of its time!
Funny thing is, the cakes being sold in dungeons are still being referenced now in PSO2, where there are sudden event of defending a cake store in a quest, by random. Sometimes it would be event oriented too. Myau is also appearing as cameo in PSO2 as 'Nyau' which is just having a difference of M and N for name, but they are similar in appearance. "The TSA takes your passport" You sir just made my subscribing after looking for a Phantasy Star tribute/analysis vid worthwhile with that single line. And considering Phantasy Star takes place in a police state...yea, totally timely line.
Phantasy Star is a really cool game to revisit. SEGA is a really underrated JRPG development company, and you can see some aspects of what makes their RPGs unique and special in this game. The emphasis on world design makes the Algol System a place you want to spend time in; the artwork is gorgeous and makes the game feel alive in a way the NES RPGs just couldn't. Giving the characters more backstory allows you to connect with them more and helps you revel in their success. The character designs themselves show that SEGA wasn't afraid to break the rules: a female protagonist and a talking space cat make up half your party. As an aside to the breaking the rules point: I love that you pointed out that one of the first steps of progression in this game is getting a fake passport; what other game would do that in the 8-bit era? As you stated in the video; the monster designs are interesting, and legitimately off-putting, especially for '87. SEGA really put a lot of work into what the Algol System is, what it looks like, and what it's rules are. However, as you also pointed out, the game's mechanics leave a lot to be desired. Combat is a chore, for the reasons you pointed out; it sucks to use magic in random battles. Having scarce MP also discourages exploration, as more exploration leads to more encounters, which leads to more damage, which leads to needing to heal with spells. On top of that, the treasure chests also might have traps, so you can either use the 2 MP on every chest you find to disarm a potential trap, or risk taking more damage which also leads to needing use more healing spells. On top of that, the booby-trapped chests rarely even have anything in them. Heck, even the safe chests rarely have useful items: the penultimate dungeon has early game weapons in it's chests. However, you can't skip exploration, because one chest or one area has something useful. It's very annoying. Progression can also be difficult to decipher. It's a bit easier while you're gathering party members and gaining modes of transportation, but once you get to the point where you're gearing up for the endgame and progression becomes less linear, getting lost becomes a distinct possibility. Overall, it's an interesting game to go back to. An awesome, well-thought out world that could've used more well-thought out game mechanics to be placed on top of it. Thanks for the video!
I LOVED this game! Thanks for this video. It made me appreciate how AMAZING this game was! I have the original cart, the GBA Collection, the Wii VC verison and unlocked the game on the Sonic Collection for the Xbox 360 but for the life of me I do not understand why the FM sound track was not included on the re-releases. The FM tunes sound AMAZING! Again great video and thanks!
Excellent video, great information. Phantasy Star is truly a masterpiece. By far my favorite 8-bit rpg and maybe my favorite rpg of all time. I couldn’t figure out Dungeon Master on the Atari ST and really wanted a first person dungeon crawler and when I got Phantasy Star I was relieved on how well it played.
My dad bought us a master system instead of an NES because he was poor. When I got phantasy star it really became clear to me how much better the Sega was. I never got caught up by price hype again. Thanks Dad.
Took me well over a year to finish this game when I was a kid. I actually had all the dungeons memorized and never physically mapped them.. Got stuck near the end, as the game was pretty vague on how to find Lassic. Then finally one day I decided to really tear though Baya Malay tower and was able to reach the top. Once there the game had given me enough clues to figure out what to do next.. Use the prism and feed Meyu the nuts.
Masterpiece of a game. Its the greatest 8 bit RPG ever. Its also one of the greatest games ever made period ! I will never forget the first time playing this and the experience I had. I always come back to eat to replay it. Good video but there’s a lot more to this and the impact Phantasy Star had on rpgs. After this all the other Japanese rpgs were different. They took notes.
To be fair, Turn-Based Console JRPGs were also explicitly inspired by Western series (Wizardry and Dungeons & Dragons specifically, IIRC) and Action JRPGs also became a break out hit genre, with the developers of the first game in that genre, Nihon Falcom, going on to make some of the best Action *and* Turn-Based JRPGs. Heck, Phantasm Star also had some excellent Action JRPG installments.
It's hard to explain how awesome this game was when it came out. The graphics, music, story, size, animation, everything was about 5 years ahead of it's time. Just compare this and Final Fantasy side by side since they came out around the same time. Years later and it still holds up as a superb rpg experience.
very well done . i hope to see the sequels covered here in the future. i'll admit while i have all 4 games i have only ever completed the 4th game in the series. maybe i should go back and beat the other 3.
I'm SHOCKED how much I enjoyed Phantasy Star I, it's the only 8 bit game I've ever finished that hasn't been a platformer. My only issues with it are that the offensive spells don't do much more than a normal attack and enemies don't have weaknesses or resistances, and that the ice you have to dig through on Dezoris, and where you're supposed to use the Aeroprism, are just as stereotypically cryptic as a lot of 80s games. I really liked the talk command though, like a proto-SMT system. Also the ending credits are the coolest and most cinematic thing I've seen done on an 8 bit console
I think this game has aged better than most 8-bit rpgs. The original final fantasy looks and plays atrocious and is a lot more generic, at least compared to this one. And the sega ages on the switch is genius and it is some of the most fun I've had with any 8-bit rpg, the rebalance to money and exp and the automap for the dungeons are a huge improvement that make this surprisingly playable and enjoyable today.
@14:25 When I was younger I didn't notice the silly events. I just thought I had missing information. @15:30 The word Laconia comes from an ancient Greek city.

Awesome video. Is there any more info out there about the plans for four planets in the original game? I love Phantasy Star!!! Been a fan since 1989!!!
There are quite a few games that I enjoy but that feel like they were made by very strange or antisocial people. Just from this game, though, I get the sense that the developers are probably some of the coolest people ever to hang out with.
You've confused late 80s RPGs with late 90s RPGs. Instruction Manuals that came with games were the location of tons of lore for games. It was only really in the mid 90st that the manuals even started to have less of the games' lore in them.
The Master System was either a lot more powerful than the NES or had some amazing programmers working on it, because these graphics are amazing for an 8-bit system at the time.
The Master System is sure slightly Mroe Powerfull than NES,also the reason SEGA so Confident Creating their Home Consoles Problem is SEGA doesnt actually has any Partner for it at the time
I had the GBA compilation cart featuring the first three Phantasy Star games. I wound up grinding Alys to max level, but literally couldn't find how to advance at all in any other way or get any other party members. PS2, I found where the first dungeon was but didn't have the patience to grind until it was possible to complete it, always getting wiped by random encounters. PS3, I couldn't find how to advance past the first town _and_ hated the combat system. I hear the fourth game was actually good but...I have my doubts.
I didn't know there was those links or fan made links to Star Wars in Phantasy Star....pretty awesome hey. Like deep nerdism hey :p Im keen as to play Phantasy Star. Gonna start on the Master System.
i was a nintendo kid so I never played Phantasy Star and i kinda regret that as i get into PSO2 in the modern day. its not the same game it was but i feel like i missed a major part of RPG history given i have gone back for others like older localized SMT, FF and DQ games
There are some errors about your video I'd like to rectify. First, Alis cannot use the Needle Gun, as it too can be used only by Odin. Plus, Odin uses the games strongest equipment too; he CAN use the Laconian Sword if you want, plus any of the other Laconian stuff. Plus, the name DarkFalz is not really a mistranslation as people might think. Just because he is known as Dark Force in the sequels doesn't mean that is what he is originally called. In Phantasy Star 4's art gallery in the Sega Saturn collection, they spell his name as "Dark Phallus". So DarkFalz is closer in translation than Dark Force.

So, this game is a fantasy game set in space where the goal is to stop the evil emperor...not to nitpick but that sounds an awful lot like Star Wars. It even has light sabers.
People have indeed pointed out that Phantasy Star has some similarities to Star Wars, at least on a basic level. The soldiers even look like Storm Troopers. But if you REALLY want see a game that feels like it's Star Wars down to the detail, you'll want to look at Final Fantasy II. I covered how similar they were in one of my recent videos.
Wierd how you mention specifically that Phantasy Star's 3D Dungeons were taken or inspired by pc games, and yet you praise Dragon Quest 2 for doing ships and recruitable parties without mentioning that these were very much staples since 1985 on pc games :)

I loved this RPG and its 4 updates....
I mom found this game for me in a drift store for 1$ including the booklet and box! :D
The first remake was actually on the Mega Drive in Japan.
@14:25 When I was younger I didn't notice the silly events. I just thought I had missing information.
@15:30 The word Laconia comes from an ancient Greek city.
Late but just want to say great video man.
great video
No guide no graph paper and i beat it when it was new i was eleven. It was also 89.99 new got it on sale for 69.99. It was 87_88 and so ahead of its time it blew my mind.
Stories in game manuals was always a thing even up to the N64 era. It’s not surprising that PS story elements were in the manual.
So lucky this was the first rpg I played. Phantasy Star to FF7 to BG2 to WoW.
the first rpg I ever played was Miracle Warriors on SMS which got me into them. Phantasy Star however got me addicted to them. Best 8-bit rpg period!
I guess Wonder Boy in Monster Land was the first rpg I played but Phantasy Star made me a fan.
The game was also ported to the Sega Maga Drive/Genesis only in Japan in 1993.
4 megabits? That's crazy for 1987...heck SMB3 was 3 megabits a year later.
are you going to cover any of the phantasy star sequels? specifically, are you going to cover phantasy star 4?
I find it oddly coincidental that I got a Genesis mini ad (which has Fantasy Star on it) when I clicked on this video
Of course I can’t play the second game without a full analysis of the First!
Awesome video! Happy to have found this channel! 🦾
soo.. OG Phantasy Star vs Final Fantasy vs Dragon Quest - which game would win? 🧐
so obsessed with graphics, but what about the music ? awesome
and Phantasy star is far superior to ff1
Awesome video. Is there any more info out there about the plans for four planets in the original game? I love Phantasy Star!!! Been a fan since 1989!!!
You really missed an opportunity to play the end boss music which is simply fantastic!
It was only really in the mid 90st that the manuals even started to have less of the games' lore in them.
huge in Brazil though
Cool series guy
my favorite game of all time and part 4 to
The Master System was either a lot more powerful than the NES or had some amazing programmers working on it, because these graphics are amazing for an 8-bit system at the time.
The Master System is sure slightly Mroe Powerfull than NES,also the reason SEGA so Confident Creating their Home Consoles
Problem is SEGA doesnt actually has any Partner for it at the time
Most perfect game of the world !!!
Ask the shopkeeper for the "secret" several times in a row. Eventually, he will sell you the roadpass.
Great vid
Wait, what? The first Gun can be equipped by Alis too? I dunno about that.... I will have to test that out myself.
Mmmmmm...Space Wendy’s
I didn't know there was those links or fan made links to Star Wars in Phantasy Star....pretty awesome hey. Like deep nerdism hey :p Im keen as to play Phantasy Star. Gonna start on the Master System.
pretty good video
i was a nintendo kid so I never played Phantasy Star and i kinda regret that as i get into PSO2 in the modern day. its not the same game it was but i feel like i missed a major part of RPG history given i have gone back for others like older localized SMT, FF and DQ games
Bro.... Breathe 💨 Great analysis though
I defeat Medusa without the mirror shield by using the spell "rope "
dungeon cake is the best cake.
This is good content but why "Mr. Gentleman?" You don't wear a fedora do you?
hi like to ask were you get the phantasy star 1 the ps2 version in English
1:39 What was the song called again?
The echo is kind of distracting, is it really needed?
12:15 story discussion
Alianger it's where he is.
Sounds like not acoustic treated.
With lots of echo.
wrong, alis does't use "the ultimate equipment", the best weapon (laser gun) and best armor (laconian) go to odin
Really One of the best Games on the Sega Master System Today ?
Yes Yes Yes 2015 First Time Play phantastisch Star One i truly understand.on PS 2 II,III,IV was ok IV was unic and good pkayebale in 200X :-) II was Maybe ok but III to weired. Dreamcast online i hear First Time this franchies and i Never truley understand Why was is so godlike Hype becaus phantasy Star I .excellent Video Series
Excellent Video Work too Good for free
It is a Lot like Star wars
So, this game is a fantasy game set in space where the goal is to stop the evil emperor...not to nitpick but that sounds an awful lot like Star Wars. It even has light sabers.
People have indeed pointed out that Phantasy Star has some similarities to Star Wars, at least on a basic level. The soldiers even look like Storm Troopers. But if you REALLY want see a game that feels like it's Star Wars down to the detail, you'll want to look at Final Fantasy II. I covered how similar they were in one of my recent videos.
Dont forget Lucas had taken a lot of the story beats for Star wars from The Japanese film the hidden fortress and old flash Gordon shows.
how long is this game worth? I want to try it out.
Dhaos620 up to 10 hours. As long you don't fall in a trap. And save the game :D
That little comment about Sonic didn't age too well.
2020's Sonic has been peak so far.
wish there was a way to play part 1 and 2 remakes in english on a console. i know u can on pc but i want console. part 4 remake would be great to
usher67 Sonics ultimate genesis collection on PS3 has 1-4!!!
but not the remakes
Also doesn't have PS1...which this video was made about. And was the best one imo, of the four.
Wierd how you mention specifically that Phantasy Star's 3D Dungeons were taken or inspired by pc games, and yet you praise Dragon Quest 2 for doing ships and recruitable parties without mentioning that these were very much staples since 1985 on pc games :)
But Sega didn't make Sonic Boom
Dark souls has nothing on this game. Even with reading an faq this game was tough
Where you get the game faq?
So it sounds like you gush over the game most of the video but then end with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are better. LOL
