Victorian fashion: How to sit in a hoopskirt (crinoline)?

- How to sit in elleptical hoopskirt? I've been asked this question several times, and so here are some of my thoughts on this: the two ways of sitting I usually use and my "how to" suggestions for elleptical crinolines. Hope, it'll be useful and informative and you'll enjoy it!
.
This tutorial may help especially when crinoline's shape significantly is shifted back, but it also useful for rounded cage crinoline.

these big hoops look like they ensured 6ft social distance before it was cool.. especially at a dining table
Actually it's kind of the purpose of it aside from fashion. I think I've read that those hoopskirts are used so that men back in the days can't touch the women that easily.
The "don't push too hard or it will hit everyone nearby" part cracked me up. That would be handy for social distancing alright XD

literally no one:
me, taking notes in case i ever have to time travel: 👁👄👁
I mean, this information is almost entitely useless if you are planning to time travel. You should learn atleast the old rendition of the language (since language does evolve from time, as someone from modern day cannot understand english from the 16th century even if they have mastered fluency). And clothing like this doesn't even matter. If you are planning on interacting with the local civilization you should wear PPE or Personal Protective Equipment. Since the immune systems of people where very weak, and the chances of you a modern person, could kill them because some germs we are immune to now are deadly to the people of the past. Though people would see you as 'weird', and possibly execute you as because for accusing you for being some sort of witch since you keep spouting 'non-sense' to them about the future. Your best bet is to get drones and spy cameras and set them up. Though the wifi connection wouldn't be able to reach the past since our technology today isn't advanced enough, or to even simply time travel.

I never have nor never will need to know how to sit with a dress like this but I’m still gonna Implant the knowledge from this into my brain
I wish I had seen a video like this one before my Quinceañera, it would’ve saved my party guests from being traumatized. My crinoline had 3 wire hoops, and when I sat down, the wire hoops popped my dress up, and flashed my guests. 😭
Aww.. well. A Quinceanera gotta get crazy am I right? Jk
Oh my gods... something similar happened to me on a party. One of my hoops broke when I sat but we didn't notice. We only knew when we say the wire dangling at the bottom of my dress while we were dancing.
At least it was memorable for everyone?
This will be perfect if you want people to distance from you.
yes for 300 years women's clothes were a form of armor to keep men at arms length.
Lol yes we should all wear hoop skirts
It works, too! Most are scared to touch the dress as they don't want to have to wash it 🤣
thats actually part of why they became popular. it literally kept men at a distance/made assault harder, were fashionable, and because you didnt need to have hundreds and hundreds of layers to make it that big and instead just needed the hoop, poorer women could join in on this trend too so it helped level out the disparity of the treatment of the different classes because both lower class and upper class women were wearing the same styles

I was thinking about that every night before I sleep for a while now, finally I will be able to sleep peacefully 😂
As a non historical fashion person, what’s the likelihood of the hoops breaking if you sit too fast/hard? Just curious!
More likely that it's the chair tipping over😆 Seriously, the wires are flexible. They can bend, but not break.
My hoops are plastic coated steel. I "fold" them up to get into my car to drive.
The modern ones (and Victorian ones) are light flexible steel, the same found as boning in costume corsets. But even in earlier periods with reed farthinggales they were pretty flexible and resilient. Honestly the type most likely to snap on you are plastic (like those in kids dressing up costumes).
Not that likely. All well made crinollettes, crinolines, bustles, and panniers were and are extremely flexible.
@@VictoriaShelg may I ask did you used hoop steel or something??

Does this method work regardless of what kind of chair/seat you are sitting on?
Very good question. I didn't have a sufficient sample of chairs, but I think there is one important point - it's chair's back. If the back is high, the methid works worse (because the hoops puff).
