  • This week we're taking a look at the solo career of former Genesis frontman, Peter Gabriel. By our count (excluding his soundtrack work) there are 9 to rank.
    ****
Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and activist. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, he launched a successful solo career with "Solsbury Hill" as his first single. His 1986 album, So, is his best-selling release and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S. The album's most successful single, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and, according to a report in 2011, it was MTV's most played music video of all time.
Gabriel has been a champion of world music for much of his career. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982. He has continued to focus on producing and promoting world music through his Real World Records label. He has also pioneered digital distribution methods for music, co-founding OD2, one of the first online music download services. Gabriel has also been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. In 1980, he released the anti-apartheid single "Biko". He has participated in several human rights benefit concerts, including Amnesty International's Human Rights Now! tour in 1988, and co-founded the Witness human rights organisation in 1992. Gabriel developed The Elders with Richard Branson, which was launched by Nelson Mandela in 2007.
Gabriel has won three Brit Awards-winning Best British Male in 1987, six Grammy Awards, thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, the first Pioneer Award at the BT Digital Music Awards, the Q magazine Lifetime Achievement, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Polar Music Prize. He was made a BMI Icon at the 57th annual BMI London Awards for his "influence on generations of music makers". In recognition of his many years of human rights activism, he received the Man of Peace award from the Nobel Peace Prize laureates in 2006, and Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2008. AllMusic has described Gabriel as "one of rock's most ambitious, innovative musicians, as well as one of its most political". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010, followed by his induction as a solo artist in 2014. In March 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of South Australia in recognition of his achievements in music.

'Melt' is no. 1 for me. The guitar riff off 'and through the wire' is really kinda unique and catchy, and 'lead a normal life' is incredible. Good watch, enjoying the channel!

This is for Joe...on "sleeping on" Peter Gabriel. There's just so many hours in a day. As a teen my prog heroes were Tull, Yes, ELP and Rush. I first heard Musical Box and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight by Genesis when I was in my 50s. Mind blown. How had I neglected such an artist for so long? There's just so many hours in a day. BTW...have had a crush on Kate Bush since her breakthrough appearance on SNL decades ago. British, brilliant and beautiful!!

Awesome list! Love Peter Gabriel, great to hear you 3 appreciate as well! Here my top 5.
    1. - Melt - Groundbreaking. Unlike anything that came out before or since.
    2. - Security - Fantastic follow-up. San Jacinto live is mesmerizing.
    3. - Us - Fully matured. Don't mind Steam one bit.
    4. - So - Great album, but as Joe said, too much 80s, overplayed. Still love Sledgehammer!
5 - Scratch - New to me but digging this. Going to be listening a lot.

My first Pete concert was the 'Scratch' tour, with the orange construction jackets cum headlamps, and Peter appearing at one point in the center aisle of the balcony. But the show I enjoyed most was the "Melt' show at the outdoor hillside Greek Theatre, L. A., where we had 5th row center aisle (of plenty!) seats, and in this particular amphitheater you don't feel the slightest intrusion from the first four rows, so Peter seemed right in front of us, and the inevitable eye contact with him was daunting!

Nicest celebrity I ever met. I was working back stage security during his New Blood tour, and I got so nervous when he walked by me (huge Genesis era fan) I just mumbled “how’s it goin?” Yet he said “good thanks, how about you?” Then it happened again, I got nervous and he had the same gentlemanly response. Been spending time with the missing early ones in my collection (Car, Scratch and Security) and it really amazes me how forward-thinking he was from the outset, something that really must’ve rubbed off on Phil’s Face Value a couple years later.
Parts of it stemming from his time in Genesis, parts of it futuristic and much of it quite moody and unsettling. Really the mark of a musical genius. 👍

Jason wuz rite. Peter Gabriel III (melt) was a game-changer. Featuring XTC (Dave Gregory), Paul Weller (The Jam), Kate Bush, Fripp, Phil Collins, Tony Levin, etc... what's not to love... Epic drama in Intruder, Family Snapshot, and Biko. The most unexpected hit in "Games Without Frontiers... a ripping rocker with Weller's wicked guitar in "And Through The Wire"... It's all amazing.
...in any case... Loved all your reactions and explanations!
I'm a new subscriber and look forward to watching more of your stuff. (edit: You ranked XTC!!!! WOOOOOOO!!!! One of the all-time great bands)
For me: 1. Peter Gabriel solo 1. GENESIS (w/ Gabriel) (tie) 3. GENESIS (w/ Collins) 4. Phil Collins solo
(But I'd also put Steve Hackett's solo stuff above GENESIS w/ Collins, too...). Cheers!

Planting my flag upon my hill with 'So'. Only R.E.M.'s "Life's Rich Pageant" affected me more in 1986...a stellar year for pop and rock albums. 'So' blends commercial success with MTV appeal and some of THEE best musicianship I've ever heard. And the combo of PG's vocals giving life to some of his most poignant lyrics since the classic Genesis days clinches it for me. One of your best discussions Listography. Thank you!

The album that really got me into PG was his 1983 live album, Plays Live. Such a strong double album - and of course it made me seek out the original albums. For me, tho, my favorite PG album is So - you all touched on how well produced it is, and this dove-tailed so well with the advent of CD technology... I would buy my first CD player in 1987 and So was one of the first CDs I ever bought. The sound and songs blew me away and it continues to be my favorite.

How serendipitous! I just finished reading "Without Frontiers, the Life and Music of Peter Gabriel"
His first 5 albums are his best.
If you can find it, "The Life of Rock with Brian Pern" is priceless. It's a British Spinal Tap about a progressive rock band. There were 11 episodes. PG plays himself, he is the arch enemy of the character Brian Pern

  • @rogerbell8429

Joe's summed it up. The first album is astonishing in its range. Every song is so different - the mood, the emotions expressed, the theme of each song, the production, the arrangements, the way he sings each song, the way he uses his voice. The more diverse each song is, the stronger the album is overall, the more depth it has. There is humour in some of the songs, something which I thought was lacking in his next three albums. The songwriting is excellent. He seemed to put so much effort into this album. 'So' has great songs but this holds together better as an album. 'Moribund the Burgermeister' is strange, unsettling, funny. 'Salisbury Hill' captures a feeling of ecstatic joy. 'Here comes the flood' is someone accepting that he is about to be swept along by forces in his life beyond his control. Modern love is someone angry and frustrated about his relationships. Humdrum is reflective about life and the end of that song touches on the birth of his child. Every song is excellent. The whole thing has a genuinely epic feel about it.

At the time, Peter Gabriel said that Waiting for the Big One was his Randy Newman song. If you listen, it's ALMOST an impersonation. Pretty good impersonation. "The Big One" he's waiting for is "The Big One" suggested by Randy Newman from Sail Away. There's also a story that the only way they could get the blues guitar out of Fripp was to get him VERY drunk.

A very entertaining and enlightening show, guys. I enjoyed how different your choices were and how you articulated your rankings.
I've 'lived' with Gabriel since SELLING ENGLAND but was totally blown away by this debut solo album. The second was a slow grower (fewer stand-outs but more interesting playing & production, as you've all noted). It just sounds like one of the great 'transitional' albums of the era. The 3rd and 4th albums were the peak of his experimental years and both are filled with classic cuts ("Intruder", "No Self Control" "I Have the Touch", "Biko" "Kiss of Life") and early 'sniffs' at the pop charts ("Shock the Monkey" and "Games Without Frontiers"). (There's a German version of the 3rd that's also worth a listen.)
It all came together on SO, a 'perfect' album of songs, performance & production marred only by being overplayed back in the day. It's ripe for reappraisal and the additional b-side with Laurie Anderson ("Excellent Birds") is a real bonus. US pales only slightly in comparison and features some of his best songwriting. Some of the songs feel a bit too long but otherwise, a fine collection PASSION is an indispensable part of his interest in world music, collaboration and musical textures. A journey that enriches each time. (And if you like 'Melt' and 'Security', seek out the BIRDY soundtrack to hear those tracks re-worked for the big screen.)
I kind of stopped after that. Gabriel lost his momentum, his pop drive and... his hair. The later releases and live albums feel/sound ponderous. I recently scored a cheap used version of SCRATCH MY BACK and thought it was interesting but it also betrayed a man more in love with sound than songs. If it turns a few more people into fans of Magnetic Fields, that's still a service to humanity.
If he's done, his legacy is secure. If there's more to come, it would be worth hearing from you three as to what you think/hope might be Gabriel's next project.

One of my first ever live shows was Peter Gabriel, in 1980 at The Manchester Apollo, on the Melt tour. I remember the tour programme was a a Little Red Book, very Mao ;) To start the show, the whole band, including I think Gabriel, walked to the stage from the back of the hall, each carrying a high-powered torch whose lights they waved over the audience. They all wore black jump suits. I was probably a bit too young to appreciate its full artistic impact. I wish I could go back and relive it! Also, I recall the support band was called Random Hold, featuring future collaborator David Rhodes on guitar. I put Melt at #1 too.

It's always been a sort of phenomenon how as artists age, their creativity runs dry.
I think it largely comes from artists who transformed music in such groundbreaking ways in their heyday, that it comes to haunt them as so many artists look at their place in music as trends come and go. Not that every artist tries to stay relevant by testing trendy waters, but those who were in the mainstream spotlight hold a value to being in that realm and their music suffers as a result. Many artists who never really were top 40 can find their inspiration easier and don't sweat past successes and essentially have been able to build a loyal following. The reason why artists like Robert Pollard, who is 63, can tap into inspiration that allows them to create music that rivals even their most "classic" material is that they let go of market expectations and past glories all while hammering away at getting ideas out and letting inspiration flow almost constantly, like a writer. A lot of writers write whether they are inspired or not. I think that's why artists like Pollard can thrive with great music well into old age.

Same as Joe... Nr1 also for me his first Solo Album. I think it had no real name, only "Peter Gabriel". Still listen to the whole album constantly. Maby also because of the remembering when I did buy it to my collection, took one of the most beautiful girl I ever met to a weekendtrip in the mountains region San Bernardino (Switzerland). Hotel was a Castle, empty, no guests, kind of Ghosthotel. Well, we listen to the whole Album 1000 times and so on. When I listen now, still can recall all of that trip... Oh, by the way... This was in 1978... Only Music can put you to such certain places and feelings far far away... Well done guys and Joe for the same Nr1...

I ALWAYS loved "Shock the Monkey" and "Big time" though...

That's where it ends. Phil Collins is one of my favorite drummers. But I cannot stomach his solo albums at all.

    No1 ... Security.
I was a huge Genesis fan, until Steve Hackett left (I’ve played Trick of the tail and Wind and Wuthering as much as the early PG with Genesis) Apart from the singles, I didn’t really take to PG’s solo
work, until Security, or Gargoyle as I labelled it. It was so sonically powerful textured and interesting to me and I loved the production, his up close vocals. Hard to pick a favourite track but probably have played San Jacinto and The rhythm of the heat most.
    2 ... So
Red Rain is one of the best sonic/musical experiences ever recorded ... by anyone.
    3.... Us
    4.... Passion
The rest I will now give a very close listen to as I trust your judgement and have probably missed out on some great music.

I was a fan of Genesis in those days, even stayed with them for the first 2 albums after Gabriel left. Like so often, you wondered why people would make such a change like leaving such a band but when the first solo album appeared it became clear that the man was much more than just the Genesis singer. He was a significant artist on his own.
Others. I have listened to the other ones but none stuck as worth going back to again...
    7. Up
    6. Us
    5. 4 (Security) - he plays safe here...it came as fourth release and had nothing really new.
    4. So - it is his most successful and it is easy to see why...it is no bad album but not as thrilling as his earlier stuff.
    3. 3 (Melt) - The third of his really great ones, from then on he played it safe and went mainstream to please the crowds...
    2. 2 (Scratch) - remember that this came out in 1978 and was light years ahead of anything at the time.
    1. 1 (Car) - his most underrated album and by far his most diverse but all the facets work. The album alone justified his departure from his former band. It is the first choice for me whenever I feel like listening to Gabriel.
PS - I would rank Passion - Last Temptation above all his later releases.

PG3 has that life around it, not a slick production, a little dirty or gritty with so many great pieces.

    1 & 2 are soooo close.
Melt and Car. It was Melt for the longest time but I have to agree with the dude with the ballcap minus glasses at the bottom -- every song is different and there's an interesting cohesion to it. Bob Ezrin from The Wall and Robert Fripp + Tony Levin. Although I think he hit an artistic stride with Melt. He ditched some of the more traditional musicianship from the first two albums and never returned.
I'm not going to rank them. Scratch and Security are really good. I like the first four as a set. He turned the page with So but I really think the charm with So is the production and the musicians. He seemed to give them more freedom and it pays off. I do think he lost an artistic part of himself but that happens -- people move on.
I really like Passion and Ovo as artistic ventures. I'm more familiar with Ovo minus the opening rap song and really listen to the Millenium Show version with the story book which has the rap song on a separate disc, I think that's very nice. He never released Ovo on vinyl but I really think its a significant work of his.
Up is crap. Us is better but both are overproduced. Sure there's some nice and interesting moments, for sure. But he tried too hard and was a bit out of touch, pop-wise. Washing of the Water is a great song. Secret World too. The covers and Scratch My Back stuff is a bit of a yawn. However, during the 2000s and 2010s, he did turned up a really good song here and there. Burn You Up, Burn, You Down from the Big Blue Ball is a good solid song. Animal Nation is almost an awesome song, almost. I think the original version of I Grieve from Up that appeared on the City of Angels soundtrack, is a gorgeous song. The album version doesn't compare. Lovetown is a great song too.
I/O just feels nice. I'm not disappointed at all. It feels like Peter Gabriel has welcomely returned. He's not trying too hard like on Up. I feel like Panopticon (the crappiest song on the record) might be a trailing of Up. But he actually returns to some of his older forms that he skimmed early in his career with Playing For Time. This is probably his most piano and horns heavy record and they all sound good. The title track is great. Four Kinds of Horses, Olive Tree, This Is Home, and Live and Let Live are all great songs. But yet, the best may be, And Still.
Solo Gabriel and Genesis Gabriel are a toss-up. Genesis Phil then Phil. I think Phil gets a bad rap, though. I believe Phil Collins was always the most important member of Genesis. When they first played with Phil Collins, the band collectively felt the songs were easier to play and that they sounded better.

My favorite is his debut solo album “car” from 1977. Humdrum, Here Comes The Flood are exceptional.
Album 2 is a bit boring and 3 almost a bit dated as it was very cutting edge at the time. Album 4 “security” is a bit synthetic as he used Fairlight throughout. Wallflower is a great track and Rhythm of the Heat sounded brilliant in an episode of Miami Vice titled “Evan”. So is probably his masterpiece and Us is a continuation and pretty dense. I’ve nothing after that!

It’s been so long since I listened to Peter Gabriel’s solo career, but I do know the true number 1 Album has to be Passion: The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack. Joe, if you like Peter Gabriel’s music now, you HAVE to listen to that album. I'm a bit older and watched him grow at the time, first concert Glasgow Apollo 1977 ish. You mention Pop, he was not pop at all, he was the opposite - he pushed the boundaries in his first 4 albums. You may notice his face was never clear, from Genesis thru his albums until SO. It's a pity you guys never saw the concerts that matched the albums - it was always about being an artist (with surprises). He was a great singer but a better vocalist, an instrument that pushed the boundaries which made him unique. First album has fantastic songs/tracks - the next few are true creative brilliance - no one at the time was so experimental - he was not mainstream at all - until SO. Artist not Pop please. Great to see his music loved by you youngsters.

Coming back a couple of months later, of all the albums, Melt has grown on me the most, and the middle 5 songs Family Portrait, Through the Wire, I Don't Remember, Not One of Us and Games Without Frontiers are all excellent. However, I think Car is more consistent with a greater variety. Bugermeister, Modern Love, Humdrum, Slowburn, Down the Dolce Vita and Here Comes the Flood are my favorites. As for the 4th album, Mother of Violence, On the Air, DIY and the Animal song are my favorites. As for Security, Shock the Monkey, San Jacinto and the amazing percussion in Kiss of Life are my favorites. Some of the others songs are a bit too disturbing or atmospheric. Big Time and Red Rain are my favorites on So, but the eighties production largely subdued on Melt and Security really comes to the fore and gives the songs a bit too much gloss and smoothness without the intriguing rough edges and organic feel I prefer on the first four albums, though I think the song writing is quite good on So. However, my main connection is to the best songs I mentioned on the first four albums.

    My personal fave Gabe's:
    1. Up - His most mature work of art. Very poetic. Still got some edge. Best tracks: Darkness, Growing Up, Sky Blue, Don't Leave, I Grieve, The Barry Williams Show, My Head Sounds Like That, More Than This, Signal To Noise.
    2. So - His greatest commercial success. No duff tracks. Fun. Best tracks: Red Rain, Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up, That Voice Again, In Your Eyes, Mercy Street, Big Time.
    3. II (Scratch) - A personal fave. Love the song vibes and textures. Best tracks: On The Air, D.I.Y., Mother Of Violence, A Wonderful Day In A One Day World, White Shadow, Indigo, Flotsam And Jetsam.
    4. III (Melt) - Breakthrough album. Found his commercial punch. Best tracks: Intruder, No Self Control, I Don't Remember, Games Without Frontiers, Not One Of Us.
    5. IV (Security) - Awesomely ominous. Disturbing. At least half of the album. Best tracks: Rhythm Of The Heat, San Jacinto, I Have The Touch, Shock The Monkey.
    6. I (Car) - Very Genesis-like. Lamb Pt.3. A promising solo start. Best tracks: Solsbury Hill, Humdrum, Here Comes The Flood.
    7. Us - Sommnabulism sets in. A few uptempo echoes of So. Best tracks: Steam. Digging In The Dirt, Kiss That Frog.
    8. Scratch My Back - Liked two remakes: Boy In The Bubble and Listening Wind. Rest too slow and sleepy.
    9. New Blood - Orchestra overly slows it all down to a mellow puddle.

I think the first song on "UP" is great....than, everything after that wasn't all that thrilling. Saw Gabriel twice (with Tony Levin)...each performance was magnificent and majestic. I hope he tours at least just once more.... Love that bizarre song "Excuse Me".
