  • “Evacuate your family and pets now” - that’s the message from civil authorities who have issued an immediate evacuation for some Lahaina residents. The evacuation has been issued for the Wahikuli subdivision in Lahaina due to brush fires keeping multiple units of first responders busy including federal, state and county agencies.

In the 40 years I’ve lived on this planet, I’ve never once heard of a place as lush and moist as Hawaii suffering from wildfires, only floods, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

I was there in March and shocked at how dry Westside was… super dry & brown. Not lush unless you go to north shore. 😢

The leeward side of all the Hawaiian islands sits in the rain-shadow of the massive volcanic mountains. We lived Lahaina for years, it's basically a desert climate there. When people think of Hawaii, they picture the windward side (lush, green), not the leeward side... but the best beaches tend to be on the dry sides. West Maui had fires every year we lived there.

My heart is breaking for everyone in Lahaina. Of all the islands I would escape to Maui and Lahaina specifically for my vacations. It saddens me to think Front St is in the state it is. Hope for residents and visitors to be safe.

I'm sure the tree was damaged, but it's so large that I also am sure it will survive and regrow...with nothing around it anymore! Unbelievable.

Former Maui Resident here. Maui used to have MULTIPLE prescribed burns because they still had the sugar cane industry at that time. They had beautiful green grass fields of cane when the cane was young. Then on the proper time and day they would burn those leafy grasses off leaving behind the cane that they would cart off to the processing factories, leaving behind a bare field ready to be replanted. Now no more prescribed burns. I have wondered if something like this would be the result of no more prescribed burns. What is there now is abandoned neglected fields which grow massive amounts of firestorm fuel unchecked. I say bring the sugar cane back! Much better to be ready for and used to the burns. This is devastating. 😢

This is why you need to keep a bit of a pantry, some canned goods, keep ahead on your medications, etc. assume you have to stay home for, for instance, 2 weeks. Do you have food, water, are you OK if the power goes out? This could be for any reason, fire, earthquake, hurricane, chemical spill, somebody wen fut, whatever.

None of the videos have any firefighters anywhere !!! I’ve been looking for any kind of response team and there is none!!! They let it burn on purpose!! They did a similar thing to us here in the socal mountains this winter. We got 5’ of snow in a week (Normally 1’ is crazy for us) and immediately they always have plows running but this year not a single plow! Then they barricaded all the roads so no one could go up to help. They let these people starve and freeze to death in their homes trapped by the snow. All they had to do was run the plows like they always do instead they purposely shut down the plows blocked all support and said shut up big daddy government knows best. I have a video of me arguing with a police officer blocking us from our home on my UA-cam page. Welcome to climate lockdowns. If it’s a “natural” disaster no one is to blame…
