- As the massive wildfires continue to destroy parts of the island of Maui, authorities confirm at least 53 people have died. NBC News’ Miguel Almaguer has the latest on the devastation to the historic town of Lahaina.

what's weird about all this coverage is the focus on just describing the damage. Capturing "feelings". Not where it started, no map to show distance covered and how fast, no scale of the damage. From the aerials it looks like a small little village, not a town, so its hard to fathom how so many could have died. How fast were the winds?

There is only one way in and out. That’s why so many died. We got trapped near there when fires shutdown the only road to the airport and we were just up the road from Lahaina. A twenty minute drive took almost 5 very scary hours. I hope they factor in escape routes when they rebuild. This never should have happened. That whole area is basically a desert. The rainforest is on the other side of Maui.

Lahaina is the old capital of the Hawaiian Republic, the land that burnt was were majority of Hawaiians live. Kaanapali and tourist land was untouched. this was the work of blackrock, and oracle so they can buy up the property after insurance goes through.

Climate change has come to the tropics. Everything there was tinder dry. So sad that this is happening. In western Canada we have an unprecedented amount of wildfires. So far this year 100,000 sq km have burned and it is only halfway through the season.
That side of Maui is ALWAYS dry. Sometimes bad things just happen.
