LTEX is Larry's Truck and Electric. It is in McDonald, Ohio. LTEX is a rebuilder, reseller, a scrapper and a lesser of Locomotives, road and yard switchers. provides sales and repairs of parts.
The Ohio Commerce center in Lordstown, Ohio. is 476 acres, has 9 warehouses, and 8 concrete storage pads. the complex was built in 1942 as a military storage depot. The government sold the property in 1967 to the community improvement corporation of Warren, which was operated by the space center of family companies. which purchased the property in 1977. and sold again in the late 1980's not sure who the owner is now, but the property has leased to a diverse client base over the years, which includes, railroad repair, rail storage, transloading, and auto storage. no matter the name of the facility, most locals still call it the space center. main rail access is thru CSX but can also connect with Norfolk Southern.

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW , I can't believe the amount of locos and parts they have . I don't know where to start , those CR switchers were sweet . Those funky looking UP's I thought were CF7 or something like them . I had to pause the video . They are RD20SD or CD's made by RailPower Tecnoogies ( RJ Corman) and what they do is rebuild old loco's into environmentally friendly hybrids .
That CSX 1320 was another Hybrid 9:40 I like this one more then the UPs. I don't understand why these are there , they look to be in good condition .
At 9:33 those locos behind the slug are slugs also . You can tell by looking at the long hoods , where the radiator fans and grills would be it's solid .
Ole #71 looks like it should be at Lordstown and some of the locos in there should be on the road.
Awesome awesome video Pappy , thanks for checking it out and taking us a long .
    500 soon to be !

Wow Jerry that was some great info, cause I had no idea about the UP swichers I did like them, alot. And had no idea that RJ corman would be involved with that, I did point out in the video one of the full size slugs but I'm partial to the cut down slugs, I love slugs, I do agree some of these definitely look like they shouldn't be there unless its some kinda storage for later use, but the parts piles kinda say different. Definitely agree #71 should be in the scrap heap, glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you Jerry.

Here's a little info on the Gensets. Pieces of junk. The Y899, if i got the number right. I remember the 99 part. Anyway, I paired it with one of our SD38-2's and not too long after that it developed a fuel leak from the fuel filter. I set the unit out. That unit and a few others were heading to Roseville and the two center windows were blanked over i believe with a metal plate at that time. Ours were delivered with wiper blades and non blanked center windows here in the Midwest. The Roseville units were passing through our area and, we gave them a "shakedown" run which is why i was told to mate it with my SD38. Eventually, we got our junksets the Y887 first then months later the rest followed. The 888, 889, 890, 891, 892, 893. Needless to say they are unreliable junksets. At one time there were three units mated to each other because all three had at least one issue the other didn't have. We've always had to continue using these units even with their reliability problems because their purchase was attached to a highway grant which, required them staying active or repay the grant back. Currently two might be heavy bad order in the diesel shop awaiting parts (my guess) and, the others are being assisted by SD40-2's and, two are actually mated to each other (probably the only units that have work consistently). Each of the engine pods cost $10,000 to replace. Each unit has had at least one pod changed a year. The looks are deceiving with locomotives. The gensets look great aesthetically but, mechanically they are shot. I'm assuming all the RP20 were built the same way minus a few minor things. If you ever model one the frame actually has a bow in it. When the fuel very is low the frame bows upward in the center and bows downward when full. Only the frame and trucks are original EMD. The stairs, fuel tank and, everything else are all either newly purchased or fabricated metal. Look for the number series of the units i gave you in the scrapyards soon because i think this year the grant ends and they can do what ever they want with them.

OUTSTANDING. ! My first load of steel was out of the mill in McDonald steel way back in 1971. Hauled steel and aluminum in and out of McDonald and Lordstown for 45years. I knew alot of drivers that Hauled GM cars out of the plant. Used to see all sorts of locomotives parked there over the years. ! Too bad most of the Good Jobs are gone from the area. Larry's Truck and Electric does lease locomotives. I have seen them numerous times on the AVRR in the Pittsburgh area. I can only imagine the hazards of going into those units, wasps, snakes, other critters. Would love to walk through the place with a chainsaw. The railroad that I once worked for(B&LE) would send their retired units to Larry's. I can only guess what kind of bank account he has.

The GP50's & SD50's weren't well liked by the railroads because the 645F3's were unreliable. The motors were pushed to the max on how much horsepower they could handle and literally shook themselves apart. This is why EMD debuted the 710 series with the GP60's & SD60's being introduced.Alot of them were just outright sold or scrapped because nobody wanted to deal with them. This was just the second phase of EMD's reputation starting to go downward because previously some railroads dealt with units such as the SD45's,SDP45's,SD45T-2's,SD45-2's,
FP45's,and SD45M's which continously had nothing but problems with crankshafts and why only most of the SD45's were rebuilt.
As for the GP50's & SD50's,all that had to be done was interchange power assemblies from any 645E3's on the 645F3's to derate the horsepower or simply change the settings on the Woodward governors. But,this hardly happened on any of those units.
Interesting enough, the six MK5000C's from Southern Pacific that have been with Utah Railway for years now were rebuilt as M5000-3's with 645F3's but they were modified with 645E3 power assemblies.Their Caterpillar 3612 prime motors are becoming outdated on resources and expensive so they resorted to EMD rebuilds which were better on costs and longevity.

Really sad to see so many of those EMD's going to waste & rust in the trees at the beginning of your video... and worse, that they (apparently) never even bothered to cover the exhaust stacks on all those naturally aspirated units that you "shot" from the bridge.
I can't imagine the horrible shape of those NA EMD 567 & roots scavenged early 645 prime movers are, after sitting all these decades (from the looks of all the trees and bramble growing up around them) with no exhaust covers and the accumulation of rain water, snow, dust, etc,etc getting down into the exhaust plenums and ports. It never stops to surprise me how the Class1 carriers can get rid of some fairly new and decent locomotives. Locomotives, that if it was my railroad, would still be in service or stored serviceable. Alot of the GE stuff I would put out to pasture, but the GM stuff is worth keeping.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 6 місяців тому +3

The more units that are on the rosters includes more taxes that have to be paid. When there is more than enough units, until freight traffic increases or there's a power shortage, then they're not needed and will be put in storage.Or when units become outdated they also will be put in storage or scrapped if it means more profit in return than keeping some and rebuilding them.
Many EMD units within the last thirty years aren't really worth the rebuilds except for the diesel motors.GE units have better traction motors while obtaining stronger tractive effort which makes them great pullers.EMD slacked on this thanks to Siemens and their unreliable traction motors.
However, traction motors from almost any EMD unit do load quickly which gives them the advantage of accelerating faster and great for switching, but they aren't useful when it comes to serious tonnage.Another thing to note is that EMD's dynamic braking sucks while GE's is great.Basically,GE has always been more technologically advanced than EMD while EMD always provided units and diesel motors that will keep running no matter what, one of these is what keeps the railroads interested.EPA regulations killed EMD because their 567's,645's,710's are two stroke and produce higher emissions.
Quite obviously there is still thousands of units out there but further production was discontinued and CAT/PRLX ruined the reputation by trying to make more failed Caterpillar rebuilds.
There's reasons why more EMD units keep ending up in storage from Class 1 usage with lesser rebuilds being invested while GE units are everywhere and rebuilds are starting to become more common, espiecally since Wabtec now owns General Electric.
The last greatest EMD units were the GP40-2's & SD40-2's which have continued to outlive many other units.

Steam locomotives you can rebuild forever and at the time of their scrapping in the late fifties there were many that had served 40 or 50 years plus. Many of the first generation diesels barely lasted up to their lease expiration. When you see 70 plus year working everyday at some short line or industrial Railroad and then you see all of these great big haulers that are 50 years newer sitting in a graveyard. Of course the older units is nice and simple and you can keep them working forever. It is a whole lot less work and expense to keep something in serviceable condition than to fix it after it's been derelict for a while.

This is what happens when your model railroading gets out of hand. It starts with a Lionel train set around the Christmas tree, then it just gets out of hand after that.😁😁😁

Not sure from what, but I know their cut down from pre-existing engines just not sure or which ones, I have been in live chats that they had talked about that but I can't remember what engine is what lol they need simple names like cars have, then I'd be better at it.
