Out Of This World Geothermal Facilities in Iceland - Reykjanesvirkjun Power Plant

- This is a geothermal high-tech fantasy from one of my recent trips to the westernmost part of the Reykjanes Peninsula where we also have state of the art geothermal power-plant. Unlike the Svartsengi Power Plant by the Blue Lagoon they only produce electricity (130 MWe) and deliver 830 GWh anually. The operate 28 high-temp. boreholes and the total length is 55km. This is the only drilling rig in Iceland powered with electricity only and it's name is Thor.

Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi - Наука та технологія
Guess that's one of the perks of living on a natural pressure cooker :-)
The world's largest baking oven 😎
A beautiful day to fly. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful week!
Thanks for visiting
❤these slow panning aerial shots,, 😎🆒️
Glad you like them😎
Nice groove!
I had fun with this one after I found the music :)
A very different choice of music from what you usually pick, and it was brilliant! I loved the Eighties prog appeal it had. A great fit for the pictures!
Another brilliant edit! 💪🤗
Thank you very much! I had fun with this one, just checking what fits together but the music saved me this time, weird but nice tune that allowed me to play around a bit :)
Never really knew much about the Power Stations. Impressive and love the music. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
The sharp contrast of the shiny buildings against the black landscape looks amazing.
Thanks for another great video, Gylfi.
Thanks a ton and always welcome :)
Wow 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
That was built by someone with an artistic background. Beautiful
👍 much appreciated and welcome 😀
Wow! Just amazing.
Welcome :)
Nice little film G. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
@@JustIcelandic Are they doing all of these fantastic looking buildings in aluminium? If so, is that because (i am guessing) that aluminium is cheap? I remember driving past the smelters on the way from Keflavik to the apartment.
Could you do a film about the old airfield at Keflavik , and the airfield in Reykjavik? Im an airplane nut. I know you are busy with the red stuff, but one day.
@@markpitts5194 I'm guessing it's also because it corrodes a lot less than iron/mild steel in the presence of hot water/steam
Once again you rake my breath away with these views of your country. Fantastic. 👏👏
Thanks! 😃
Only you could convince me looking at an industrial facility for 3 minutes is satisfying, Love your videos, I discovered you with the volcanos, I stayed for the breathtaking views :D
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for sharing, I didn't know they were drilling there, I did not see this rig end of July last year. @ShawnWillsey has a nice video about this site and the seastack actually being part of a volcano crater rim
Yes you can see the crater row in the end of the video, strange eruption that migrated onshore after starting as an offshore eruption.
Stunning imagery, great music. Thanks for sharing. Greeting from the southern isle of Tasmania.
👍 greetings to Tasmania
You are doing Eyesland! You are flying!
👍
Fantastic footage as always. Love the slow pan. The design of the last complex with its curvilinear shiny roof is noteworthy. Gylfi, your choice of music is perfect, as always.
Side note: so many people use music as a background but your use of music is a complimentary feature that enhances your posts. I eagerly look forward to them! Thank you so much!
Thanks again Gylfi. Harnessing nature for good.
Absolutely!
Good music choice for it
Thanks :)
Extreme drilling conditions you have there, I guess. Art of well engineering
"Art of well engineering" fits well, those wells are expensive so it's hugely important to get drill right, trough a fault in this case.
Love that concept!! Thx 💪🏻😎🤙🏻
👍
Thanks for sharing Gylfi. Warmest greetings and best wishes from NZ.
Thanks for watching👍
this is great, i haven't seen some of these since i was in the oil field for work. thank u for taking the time to show us this
Thanks for watching!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing, Gylfi!
Thanks for watching!
there is a huge potential for these, worldwide.
Thats right, we just started
Nicely done. Thank you for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video and accompanying music. Would be great to get a tour of the facility.
Will do so later, Iv'e been collection power plant footage for some time now :)
In 2008 , I did go visit the Hellisheiði Geothermal Plant , quite interresting !
Yes I like to look at those places, fantastic technology in many cases
I look at this as the earth giving back in terms of the power supply!
👍
Please do another and more in depth, like go inside and show us the whole show, That would be an eye opener!!!!!!!!!!
Well...there is a reason she I'm always shooting power plant footage :) I will do a tour with interviews some day :)
Cool music!
Welcome :)
Thought we was going to get the grand tour, heheh, ah well .Would of been very interested to see inside this facility aswell😄.
Well...there is a reason she I'm always shooting power plant footage :) I will do a tour with interviews some day :)
Good evening Gylfi.
I wished we could make clean energy your way.
We can only harvest wind and sunlight.
Yes this is a true luxury.....
A commentary on what we are seeind would have been great !!
Well...there is a reason she I'm always shooting power plant footage :) I will do a tour with interviews some day :)
would love to see that shot with the thermal camera!
Noted :)

Awesome!
Thanks Diane :)
The Art Deco style powerplant buildings are looking very nice, straight out f a scifi movie with the shiny metal cladding and skinny chimneys.. Very cool of the power company to put effort into the structure design to make it look good as well.
The drilling operation at the start is very ugly... but this is just temporary I guess, I suppose the permanent structures that will be built there will look similar to what you show at the end.
The powerplant at Svartsengi also looks sooo nice.
I agree, the drilling is a dirty work but this will all be gone then they finish.
I had flashbacks of watching "Flash Gordon" as a child.🤣
Love your music rep. 😉
Thank you 🙌
Amazing. Is that a new well being drilled? Thanks, Gylfi.
Yes it's a new one, they have 50km of drill hole tunnels there
Amazing country! was there last august. enjoyed 4 days visiting. look forward to your videos, thanxs for sharing.
Awesome! Thank you!
Well a lot of people know what amazing science is happening at some of these facilities, carbon capture among them
.
Yes they have remarkable things going on there
I can’t believe you were allowed to do this! In Minnesota, where I live…you’d have been taken in for questioning for filming or taking pics of refineries, power plants, etc. My friend had his camera taken, his film destroyed, and he was put on a watch and no-fly list. He was taking pics for a contest, the subject being different types of construction. He was a very old man, and they abused him.
Iv'e seen numerous such stories from the drone community and this might only get worse, but still all good around here, and I'm sorry to hear about your friend, and greetings from Iceland
I was wondering the same thing.with all the fear of terrorist activities, power plants and such are highly vulnerable.
I think it helps that Iceland is not a superpower with enemies…. And is not overpopulated so that drones can fly around
Was wondering the same. So let's hope that no would-be terrorist will take a look on Gylfi's footage and try to use it for his own criminal projects. 🙏 @@lesleycockerham2980
Thank you for the beautiful imagines.
And for not having a pung ping pingy piano as background. I have to mute videos with heavy pingy piano music, i get such an awful head from it😅
You're welcome 😊
This is so cool! I have tried looking on Google earth at the power plants there and couldn’t see much of anything. Thanks for the interesting footage, as always! 🎉🎉
Glad I could help and welcome :)
😮😮😮 I plan to visit this year only 5 days but you have provided wwway more than that. Thanks 🇵🇷
From my experience, 5 days will be enough to make you dream of returning for life!
Welcome to Iceland, and my channel :)
🌋🔥👍
Welcome
How did you get permission to do that flyover Gylfi? Lucky man excellent job amazing flying looks like people were filming you also. Best of luck Gylfi 👍 from the uk 🇬🇧 to Iceland 🇮🇸
Where there are no restrictions, I just take off and fly :) and greetings to the UK :)
Beautiful aerial from there, can you explain how it’s working and what it’s the factor to have one, thanks.🙌
NICE THANK YOU 👍🙏>>>💚
Thanks for visiting
You should consider covering what alternative power sources are being used as backup. You know, just in case.
👍
Now if we could just harness the power of lightning
If we only could :)
😂 Of course it's name is Thor. Darn thunder Gods get all the attention. ❤
This plant is used by genesis mining I beleve (can been see in the background)
Do I see an undeveloped White Lagoon? 😊
It's the brown lagoon :)
How come the power plants didn’t get touched I wonder..
Well built, this one is at a safe distance from Grindavik but the Svartsengi power plant suffered some damage, but built to withstand earthquakes so it just kept on, but for a while, without star so it's was operated (remote mode) from this one while the worst chapter were hitting them.
P.S. vel å minnst, godh tonlist! B
👍
I'm surprised you are even allowed to fly a drone there and film this installation. In my country this would be considered critial infrastructure and you would not even get permission and would be questionned by the police and maybe even other security-services for merely asking for permission.
