  • The Baaka Pygmies are people that live at the edge of the Bayanga National Park in the Central African Republic. They are known for their songs and dances, but also have their own distribution of roles in the tribe: Women dance the Pongo for the spirits, and men risk their life by climbing up the trees to gather honey from wild bees.
Extract from the documentary: “Living cultures - The Baaka Opera”
    Direction: Jean Queyrat
    Production: ZED & TF1

I feel so fortunate that I have this, it includes swimming pool and broadband use. I get a pension, and even though it's not much I get to choose what I want from the supermarket, put petrol in my car and do what I like. I don't have to risk my life to get food or keep my children alive in the jungle. These people have each other, and that is the greatest gift of all.

Very limited technology and culture, though. I personally also long for reconnecting with the rainforest, but I would definitely not like having to give up something like the Internet, or the Western music tradition that produced the magical harmonies of Bach. I mean, no offense to their singing, but it's not exactly "masterful", they're for the most part singing quite repetitively with very little harmonic or melodic variation; planning a piece full of well-placed harmonies and melodies, which has a direction throughout, is something that requires considerable skill and craftsmanship, and performing such pieces typically requires practice.
I'm torn between the simplicity of their lives and the good parts of the complexity of civilization (particularly since I strongly dislike the bad parts of the latter).

So beautiful. Aka singing is magic and relaxing, somehow joyfull anyway. We have to leave all these people to live their own life. Despite all technology so called developed countries are not happy. Wealthy countries have everything but lack harmony, peace, humanity and respect for the nature and the future for coming generations. We leave dangerous garbage to them the same we treat some countries like a garbage place. Only in harmony with nature vi kan sing and dance like this.

Their biggest threat is the tribe that took over the area they lived in and made their life hell. It’s such a sad situation and the government claims it’s trying to help, yet the abuse continues. I’ve researched the Baka and I used to send financial help until I found out that they were not getting it. These people are so very kind and loving. Praying they overcome.

A wildlife refuge is taking a large chunk of the Baaka hunting gathering territory and threatening their way of life. So called wild life guards (simply men from other tribes who consider them self higher status than the Baaka) threaten them on non refuge land as well. Something has to be done to save them. They are some of the last ppl living the way humanity was intended to live. Such a beautiful ppl.

    1. How far these pigmies from cities of Central African Republic?
    2. The lifestyle they are living is accepted by these people or they are ignored by gov?
    3. Do these childerns go to school? Do these people aware that how the world is advanced?

Indigenous people have so much to share and teach citied "civilized" peoples. We all need to demand that indigenous people are treated well and given fair amounts of lands and sovereignty in all of our countries.

Learning can be destructive. When I was a kid, I'd catch a garter snake and play with it. No harm intended. Now, at fifty-four I look back and understand I scared that animal, changed it. How would I like it if a giant creature picked me up, poked and stared at me? They don't teach you this in college.
