  • Abdullah Miniawy Trio
Abdullah Miniawy, (Creator of Le Cri du Caire) is an Egyptian composer, writer, and singer, a well-known international artist from Fayoum living in Paris, whose album Le Cri Du Caire won the 2023 French Victoires du Jazz, the equivalent of the Grammys. Alongside him is Robinson Khoury, the young French trombonist of Lebanese origin, also based in Paris, who was named one of the rising talents for 2023 by the same prestigious award. Additionally, Paris-based Jules Boittin, another French trombonist and a professional with various French ensembles, has joined forces with them to form a musical trio led by Abdullah Miniawy, inspired by jazz elements and Egyptian soundscapes. Together, the trio is pushing boundaries by exploring new sonic ranges with an unconventional combination of three tenor instruments-the voice and two trombones. Their unique sound fuses the lyrical depth of Miniawy's voice with the bold, expressive capabilities of the trombones, creating a new hybrid musical experience.
The project seeks to engage the audience with a transcendent experience, combining elements of inspiration, cleansing, and occasionally Sufism, infused with a jazzy, metaphorical, and global flavor of Egyptian traffic jam loudness. Khoury and Miniawy, two youngsters first crossed paths during a performance by Khoury's band, "Sarab," in 2019 at La Gare, leading to the latter falling in love with Miniawy's Le Cri Du Caire. This turned their attention to how both mirrored each other and found a common background. This sparked the duo's collaboration on new music, and the need for a third musician arose when Miniawy proposed adding a second trombonist, Jules Boittin, to create a theatrical atmosphere questioning bars of modernity.
The project premiered at the Musée Dauphinois during the Detours De Babel Festival in Grenoble, and was received with a standing ovation and tears, a trademark of the work of Miniawy which many find refuge in his voice. The project showcased the team's brilliance and success as they moved from one cultural venue to another. Since then, they have entered into an international tour comprising 20 concerts this year, with a record set to be released at the Mao Oriental Art Museum in Turin, Italy. Their performances include venues such as La Alhambra in Geneva, Switzerland, the Venice International Festival during the Venice Biennale, Tunisia, Jao Photo, and more alongside; guest Erik Truffaz.
This project aims to address a wide audience, bridging the gap between Western and Eastern musical traditions not only but to add to the definition of art. It focuses on the latest musical compositions by the writer and composer Abdullah Miniawy, which inspire Baroque and operatic fusion with Coptic Christian and gulf themes. The intention is to create a global discourse on current political matters and the spirit of human unity by touching people's hearts.
The group adapts compositions from the Arab Spring, as well as others from Miniawy's former projects and from Le Cri du Caire. The show is translated into English, Italian, and French, available as PDFs, and voice-over in theater rooms.
