The most anticipated part of our North Island winter road trip was in Ruapehu. We booked our accommodation for 2 nights at Ossies Motels & Chalets which is centrally located in Ohakune
After checking in, we visited the kid’s favorite Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park. Gab had fun at the obstacle course but not until… All is well in the end because nothing couldn’t be fixed with good food.
We took a shuttle to Mt Ruapehu’s Whakapapa Ski Field early the next day. We rode the Sky Waka gondola up to a height of 2,020m above sea level that offers panoramic views out across the Central North Island. At the top, we spent time playing with the snow in the lovely weather and also, took our lunch there.
Gab & I took the last ski group lesson since that was the only available schedule when we arrived so we recommend booking early online if you are planning to do so. Gab loved every second of his 1st ski experience and so did I. Our Mt. Ruapehu adventure ended with a snowfall, a perfect icing on the cake. All in all, Mt. Ruapehu was the highlight of our North Island road trip since it was our first snow experience and more.

Omg this is my absolute fave place to go this brings do many memories back to me. It so pretty and the skiing conditions are amazing. I wish you could've been there when there has been soo much more snow❤

Which month did you guys go in? I'm planning to go skiing there soon but afraid that there won't be enough snow for the skifield to open :)
Hi @khloexuan! We went there 2nd week of July. It was when the ski season just started and there was not a lot of snowfall yet. Probably best to go mid August. This year we are planning to go around that time.
@@FamilySideTrip okay thank you for that information! I’m going on July 5th and wasn’t sure if the ski field would be open because it doesn’t look like there’s a lot of snow at the moment. I’m sure August would be a great time to go!
