South Korea's former prosecutor-turned-president Yoon is said to be innocent in his wife's bribery and stock manipulation case through political prosecutors. However, his wife manipulated $2 million and her accomplices went to jail. Other bribery cases, political intervention, but prosecutors failed to arrest her. The people were outraged and called for impeachment, and his approval rating was 17%. Today, he announced martial law by mobilizing the military. However, martial law without the consent of the National Assembly is illegal. The military's intrusion into the National Assembly is also illegal. 190 members of the National Assembly voted in favor of lifting the ban. He is going to end up going to jail

And the Military knowing their laws, checks and balances still went ahead (I suppose they knew all that was completely illegal) still went ahead and obeyed the unlawful order. Talk about doing the right thing.

Any national leader whose wife in convicted of such a serious crime , should just step down or his own party should remove him. The public in any country are not goung to accept such a situation and believe that a leader was unaware of a spouse involved in such serious crime. And if his own party was a democratically operating party , they would get rid of him to maintain their own party viability. If they rally around him they destroy the credibility of the whole party. This can happen when corruption is widespread in a ruling party and they dont think they cannot contain the damage by sacrificing the leader. Sounds pretty ugly all round.

As far as I know, most, if not all, of 300 law-makers were in Seoul as the parliment/national assembly is currently in session to cast votes on issues such as 2025 budget, impeachments of prosecuters and government audit agency chief, etc.. So they were lodged close by. Some of them had to jump over the walls as the police and military began to deny their entry.

Basically he is up to his neck in a bunch of personal and political scandals and doesnt have an effective parliamentary majority. Basically he cant govern .In a functioning democracy , he shoul step down and see if anyone else in parliament can form a government or call an election but hes trying to shutdown thd oppisition by declaring martial law which would suspend parliament and keep him power. But he blew it because the military wouldnt do what he wanted. Democracy saved ..for now. He should be inpeached as they said in the report. That means parliament investigates him and tries him. He obviously thought he could not survive such a process so he tried desparate measures. Hes worried thst he will end up in jail I guess.

In South Korea, it is business as usual. The fate of 12 of the 13 Korean President's has been to be overthrown or killed. Yes, 12 of 13. So, what we are watching is actually the norm since the end of WW2.
Here is the list: 1. Rhee Syngman (1948-1960) - overthrown.
    2. Yun Bo-sung (1960-1962) - overthrown.
    3. Park Chung Hee (1962-1979) - killed.
    4. Choi Kyu Ha (1979-1980) - removed through a military coup.
    5. Chun Doo-hwan (1981-1988) - sentenced to death after his presidential term.
    6. Roh Tae-woo (1988-1993) - after his presidential term, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
    7. Kim Young Sam (1993-1998) - served in prison under President No. 3. After becoming president himself, he secured the conviction of his two predecessors.
    8. Kim Dae-jung (1998-2003) - was imprisoned under President No. 3, sentenced to death under President No. 5. Pardoned. Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
    9. Roh Moo-hyun (2003-2008) - impeached (overturned by the Constitutional Court). After resignation, was investigated for corruption. Committed suicide.
    10. Lee Myung-bak (2008-2013) - after his presidential term, he was arrested on charges of corruption.
    11. Park Geun-hye (2013-2016) - impeached. Arrested on corruption charges. Received 24 years in prison.
    12. Moon Jae-in (2017-2022) - the only lucky one.
    13. The current President Yoon Seok-yeol has been in power since 2022. He seems more likely to have a fate similar to the 12, rather than to the last one."

      You’re wrong
Here’s why: the executive proposal of the amendment, that you’re talking about, to the current espionage laws would make the current espionage laws even more cruel and akin to Bush’s patriot act on steroids, expanding surveillance on civilians, and cruelly treat DUAL CITIZENS, aka refugees from PROC or DPRK as enemies of the state or suspected spies…
Number 2- when President Yoon clearly stated in his initial speech for martial law that he felt that the DPK was targeting his wife and his administration (which numerous government watchdogs and committees have accused them of wrongdoing) he said that as the MAIN PRETEXT for declaring martial law because they were somehow conspiring with the DPRK… the man is an idiot with zero excuses, and even his own party thought he went too far.
Guess what, impeachment is now definitely on the table after this costly stunt.

This shameful. A developed country should not show this behavior. What can we say to least developed countries or developing country if in developed countries, such undemocratic behaviour takes place ? how can we lecture developing countries to uphold democracy, order and civil govt if South Korea as one of the most developed country on Earth has taken martial law ?

What are their neighbors, North Korea, doing right now. They're literally helping Russia in a war against Ukraine. He is taking precautions due to this fact. Look into the treaty Russia just signed with North Korea. That's why he's doing this. And he's completely right to do so.
Obviously something has occurred for him to take such drastic actions.

What role did the US play in this incident? Nothing. They didn't have to. Yoon's *self-coup* was shot down in the Assembly far before anyone from a different country could do anything about it, and that's a good thing. I'd even say that because the US had no part in this whatsoever other than cheering at our democratic institution from the fence, this whole incident can be said to have had a good ending. If things did drag on just a bit longer so that any other countries had had enough time to take any different reactions than releasing a brief official statement about the whole situation, then I'd call that situation a massive disgrace to my country's institution and the rule of law.
He used to be an attorney general, and his orders were so illegal that even high school kids could have noticed something was wrong if they had studied high school law and civics for Suneung. This timeline is so dumb.

"The South Korean Parliament recently passed a law aimed at shielding the opposition leader from legal risks and ensuring his exoneration. The opposition leader is implicated in at least four corruption cases. Despite years of delays in his trials, he was recently acquitted in one case. Furthermore, prosecutors investigating these cases have been impeached by Parliament. The legislative majority is closely aligned with the leftist opposition, which has used its influence to block the presidential administration's budget, leaving it with no financial resources to operate effectively."
