    “The people decide”, is a wonderful thing for you to say. Yes it is amazing that so many love and take an interest. It is from here that the beginning begins. Humbling.

    Great video series. I enjoy each and every video! Perhaps you could do a video which shows the relationships of art galleries, museums, and the kickbacks they receive from major universities to display/represent only artists with college degrees in art. Thereby perpetuating the dream of young kids, with zero art talent, to pursue careers in art - and spend thousands of dollars on useless degrees. Similar to PHDs in philosophy. Meanwhile, degrading the integrity of the art world and denying geniuses the chance to breakthrough the art scene unless they pay for useless college pedigrees.
    Colleges give kickbacks to galleries/museums for representing college grads, and the government subsidizes the colleges for offering degrees in art. No one would want to spend $50,000 for a degree in art, unless they were almost guaranteed a return on their investment. It’s a racket. 10:42

      Hi there, a very interesting topic, so thank you for the suggestion. I believe this is a typical American phenomenon-so it is hard for me to get to the bone of this topic. In Belgium-and many other European countries-University is not that expensive, and if you are rather poor, the government supports you further. Maybe I should appoint someone to delve into this topic, sounds incredibly interesting. Thanks!

    Have been away as much time spent in studio painting. Here reviewing this again having time followed your insights and commentary. I find following you much easier now being familiar with your approach-allows me to read further into your instruction. The important part of this series in how everything is connected. I was recently talking to a artist who has a studio down the hall. I found my conversation improved by my watching CAI.

    So, I watched part one and part two. Where do artists who working animation,comic books,design,and illustration fit into the art world? Are they not in it?

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  11 місяців тому +2

      Hi Eric, thank you for watching several of our videos. Illustration, graphic design, animation, etc., are creative activities, so therefore perceived as art. However, they are part of popular culture with a clear purpose and use. Whereas so-called 'high-art', the art we discuss on this channel, is art for art's sake. Not to create a film, to narrate a story, to illustrate a tutorial, just art. There is a clear distinction between both, and in the so-called art world-meaning all the entities occupied with high art-illustrators and designers will not find the success of a contemporary painter or sculptor. Please note I do not want to decry any form of creativity by using terms such as high-art versus popular culture; it is simply how the art world differentiates itself and operates on its own. Hope this might clarify your question and wishing you a great day!

    Dear Julien,many thanks for your videos which are very informative and straight to the point. I have a question for you that has been a contentious subject of debate and that is "What is considered ,today, the definition of contemporary art?" and by that I mean a date of demarcation,would you say Post-war to now or 1960s to now ? Thank you, Maïe

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  Рік тому +1

      Dear Maïe, thank you for tuning in and great question. Yes, I believe all Post-war art is contemporary, except for Modern artists who continued to work into the Post-war era. For instance Mark Rothko's paintings are Abstract Expressionist and thus Modern-not contemporary. So I would add all Post-war art that is also Postmodern. Even more, some art is more contemporary than others. For instance, traditional landscape painting or posthumous publications of old masters. They are made today, but the spirit of the art is bound to another era, thus not being contemporary. Hope this might clarify things. Maybe we should make a video about this topic :-)

      @@contemporaryartissue Merci Julien, indeed the demarcations and classifications are always open for debates I am regularly involved in these discussions not only as an artist but also as an art curator and advisor to art collectors. Lately ,I was confronted by someone who was quite adamant that this definition stopped with artists who died at the end of the 20th century, but what about those who straddled into the 21st , then those who emerged to success in the 21st but were in the twilight of their lives like Ethel Adnan, Carmen Herera,Luchita Hurtado and the list goes on….

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  Рік тому +1

      @@maieyanni1473 Indeed, and in the end, these demarcations can become pure idiocy. They are never absolute. Styles, movements, and eras are all very fluid in a sense, flowing, overlapping, reoccurring, manifesting locally, etc. Today, and in the past. Food for thought!

    Do you believe that an artist can be an abstract artist using a digital medium?

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  Рік тому +1

      Of course! But the printing process will be very important in this case. Further, with the arrival of AI art, digital art is losing interest and value, so it isn't the easiest of avenues/disciplines to become a successful artist. Nevertheless, wishing you all the best!

    • @thegetupsessions3170
      @thegetupsessions3170 Рік тому

      @@contemporaryartissue those are valid points. I personally use digital to sell commercial art, which is different and will continue to be in demand so long as people need to promote and make things aligned with a brand. For art art I use digital to help sketches and color palettes get dialed in before they go to canvas, it helps me not waste time and material - very valuable!
