I just learned the term Narcissistic this year when someone heard me describing my husband. Boy oh boy. Narcissism is real and definitely destroys marriages. And is a mental prison. I knew marriage shouldn’t be like this. It never felt normal.

This kind of advice only creates more problem. First there's no basis for thinking that God made marriage to get better every single year. No scriptural basis at all. Second, this is a very artificial standard that your marriage has to get better every single year. You have ups and downs and you get bad moments in your marriage. That's life.

Even the "downs" in the "ups & downs" doesn't necessarily mean that the marriage is getting worse. In fact, its the ups and downs that makes the relationship stronger, the couple wiser, and the marriage better. Scriptural basis? 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Therein lies God's design for love. And if the couple's love make them "always protect, always hope, always persevere" it is IMPOSSIBLE for a marriage to not keep getting better year after year.

My point was not that the marriage doesn't get better year after year, but that when you create a standard that it has to get better every single year, you create a pressure in couples to want to meet the standard. I wholeheartedly agree with the scriptural basis, but the way you have applied to this comment was a stretch at best.

@@armaangarg2217 I think the strawman is in interpreting what the speaker is saying as a demand that 'your marriage must get better every year'. He's not making that as a standard that people must do. He's simply removing the misconception that it's inevitable for marriages to just decline - clarifying instead that God's design is for marriage to actually keep getting better. Of course that is only by following His principles.
