Scott nice work on the drag upgrades all we did on pen 209’s was to put some reel oil on them. Chris great video and I like how you and Scott work together to share the information Thanks Tim
Capt Chris a Scott:thanks so much for immensely helpful video. I did my 553 following your process step by step and it worked. Will ck for sure doing the full moon bite toniight
Hi Scott and Chris, I just did this on a 55 that is new this year. The main reel bearing that the crank shaft passes through easily dislodges (falls out) from the reel frame. I put the bearing back in backwards....it looks right when you're putting the bearing back in, but I think it screws you up in the end. Took me about 3 hours to do because I didn't recognize I reinstalled the bearing backwards.....I think. I think I did it right, and if I did do it right it is not really that hard upgrade these drags if you're careful. Got 4 more reels to do. Thanks for the help.
Only suggest I would make for this video is to place an old towel on the counter so when you drop those small screws they don't fall on the floor. An old white towel would make the screws easy to see.
Hello Chris Lost several fish on my dipsey convector reel last year. Noticed the braid would lock up line would be coming off opposite end of reel from palm. Whats the best thing to do? Respool the reel?
The easiest thing to do is to let all the line off the reel and wind it back up. If you continue to have problems the worm gear may need to be replaced. There is another method of loosening the worm gear and re-positioning it back to the correct timing, but that takes some practice and is not an easy task. So I'd recommend to attach it to an object in an open area and start walking until it's all off the reel, and then crank it back on.
Hello Chris and Scott, Darn nice video. I ordered three more drag kits today. I was thinking about reel drags and it occurred to me that these are kind of like a release on a diver or down rigger. Going a step further, I thought, how tight do you set the drag on a reel or the tension on a release. As a salmon newbie I don't have the savior-faire with respect to these devices to know how to set them effectively. I've used a trigger pull gauge to measure how much force it takes to open some of my divers and trigger my releases and it appears to be helpful to me. I was thinking it would be cool if you and Scott could talk about how to select how tight you set the drags on your reels and releases. As an example, I've noticed some folks increase the reel drag after the diver or planer board rod indicates they've got a customer and if someone does this, how snug should they make the drag. Thank you for the very informative videos!
For me, and I can only answer for me, it's more of a "feel" thing than it is anything else. After a while I can check my releases and my drags just by pulling on them and know if I need to tighten them, or loosen them. It really all boils down to time on the water and experience which is extremely difficult to transition into a video. But, I'll give it some thought.
Hi Chris and Scott, I completed a CV 45D with new drag washers and I noticed something with this reel as I did with my drag updated 55L. Neither of these reels with the drag upgrade will let out line unless you pull it out with significant force, that is to say the line does not seem like it will go out on the clicker with the drag at the lightest setting. Otherwise, the reels seem to function normally. Please keep in mind I haven't actually tried it on the water but in my yard I gotta pull to get the line to pay out. Is this drag stiffness normal to start or do you think I screwed something up? Thanks

Great video
Now that your about 2/3 through the season how do you feel about the upgrade? How much smoother are they now?
The reel that I upgraded is still as smooth as it was. Definitely recommended.
Can't see you yet.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👾👍👍
Just ordered 15 kits….anything special for my D series linecounters since it’s on the same side?
Thx Chris and Scott!
We'll be doing a follow up video soon showing how to do the line counters. There are a few small differences.
Thank you! Good thing cuz It only takes a day to get to my house when they ship me stuff 🤣
Good evening

Sounds like something is wrong. Young’s is go back through them. I would consider emailing Scott also for any advice.
Wish you could have pulled out some drag before you changed so there would have been a before and after. Still good tutorial though.
Scott and Chris , how often would you recommend a new set of washers on most reels?
Hi Jonny, It all depends on how much use they get in a season. My personal ones I do every couple years. Hope this helps!!
