I was taught to place the rod aft of the rigger to avoid the line on the rod and the rigger cable from getting tangled. Is there a benefit to either way? Thanks from Ontario, keep up the vids please
As long is the tip of your rod extends past the downrigger boom you’re fine. I like having the rod in a position where it can be easily obtained. I don’t like having to lean out over the downrigger to get the rod out of the holder.

With the long leaders on the divers, I assume you hand line the fish when the diver is at the end of the rod with a fish on? Unless you have a 20 foot handle on your net.
You say that you run a 16’ leader behind the dipsey. I have tried to run a long leader like that but It causes me trouble netting the fish as its too far away from the boat and I can’t reach it with the net. Yes, I have a long net handle.

Pat Matthews you want to keep tension on the diver for two reasons. 1. Wire line needs tension to prevent bird nesting and loose wire which the top layer will then bite into. 2. It prevents the diver from free falling and not moving into position like you expect. - Jim
Low is closer to the boat and deep while the high is farther from the boat and shallower. To avoid getting fish tangled in other lines while you bring them in you set your lines in order from the side of the boat outward. If you could look from behind the boat at the bait they would be in a V shape. Deepest under the boat, shallowest farthest out. You also stagger distance back as viewed from above outer lines are farther back. It mostly keeps lines clear of tangles while catching fish. At least smaller fish. Lol
This was a great video ! Question: My dipsys don't seem to go away from the boat even when i set them to "3". And yes, I'm on the port side for the "left" setting on the dipsy. How far should they be travelling away from the boat at a setting of 3 and speed at 2.5 mph ?
They may not seem to be traveling far due to currents below the boat. Try to see which way everything is pulling and try to adjust your troll if possible. It's also somewhat of an illusion. They may not look like they are moving away from the boat but most of the line is underwater and can't be seen which may make it look like it's not traveling out and away from the boat.
I've watched both this video and your long lines video. I still don't understand how your high divers don't tangle with your 10-core long lines. Based on a #3 setting of your 107mm high diver, with 100 feet of line out, that would run about 52 feet deep. Your 10 core is also 50 feet deep. They are the same depth. The long line is out 333 feet, though... is that what keeps them from tangling?
You have to remember the lead core and coppers are on planer boards out away from the boat. The length of the lead core and copper also help prevent tangles. Also a 107mm diver set on three with 100 feet of line out would be closer to a 35 foot depth, but I get what you're saying.
Great video and appreciated as always! Questions: Do you use 2 different length rods for your high and low diver rods or are they both the same length? Also with running wire, do you spool all wire on your reel or do you use say a 300 feet of mono etc then like 1000 feet of wire ? Thanks again.

Vekash Kantilal you can absolutely use them in salt water. We have used them to target fish over 30 meters deep with the 124mm size. 15 meters would be no problem. No additional weight required.
Been getting tangled on my dd... probably not letting them out slow enough? Also if not marking fish higher in the water column, do you still run a shallower spoon/plug in case? Thanks
We definitely still run some higher lines throughout the majority of the day. If you think about it you probably mark about 10% of the fish you catch. Many fish come on the divers and long lines which are well outside the cone of your fishfinder.
maybe next year I will plan a trip with my 27 foot boat to your side of the lake but not sure how it works crossing the border on the water would be and my canadian dollars are only worth play money to yours so it would cast me a small fortune after changing currency to USA and staying there for a short time . Good video, but no mention of settings on the dipsys? Just high diver and low diver.....so i assume you have your outside rod at shallowest depth?
High diver is somewhat of a misnomer because there are times when we are running them at the same, or similar depths as the low divers. But typically the high diver is a shallower rod. I cover all of the settings and many other diver related questions in a follow up video which was posted a few weeks later. Just look through our videos and I’m certain you’ll find it. Thanks for watching.
You only run 2 downriggers
