Why can't I hold all these feels?
For this scene particularly watch when:
0:40 Driver takes Irene and kisses her.
1:59 Immediately after, he counteracts and takes out the armed hitman.

this scene is so brilliant.. he realizes that in order to protect her he has no choice but to show her the violent animal he's capable of being and knows once he does she'll always fear him.. so he lovingly kisses her while he still can..
You nailed it my friend. Exactly what I was thinking
paul Z My bf also said that part of the reason he's so brutal with this guy is because he realises that as long as people like that are after him, he's never gonna be able to with her. There's a lot of sadness in this scene but there's anger here too.
paul Z I'll have the same idea about this scene, but maybe the kiss never happened. That's just his true wish (And ours).
Look at the lights, the time is slowing down, that seems is just a dream.
He wants this kiss, but he had to protect her so he only dream of that moment, knowing that he never happen after what he had to do.
That's just my theory and that make this scene more sad.
paul Z Samuel Kergroach I totally agree with both of you! This scene is so powerful showing those 2 sides inside him which are so opposite: ruthless violence vs love and caring
Samuel Kergroach No, he kisses her, for sure. But the kiss is a way of him temporarily stepping out of his reality. He is lost while kissing her, but then realizes that reality is that guy with the gun, who is trying to kill what he loves and that means the real him must do what the real him does.
The lighting in this movie is so perfect
gam3inglik3apro I'm pretty sure he's talking about the lighting.
Know how I figured that out? Because he said "lighting".
The fuck is wrong with you?
The director uses lighting dramatically throughout the film. I haven't seen lighting used like this since the Colonel Kurtz scenes in Apocalypse Now. Very telling of the duality of the character, the soul torn between what he wants to be, and what must be done. So powerful.
have a look at Manhunter -- the scene where the killer is watching his girlfriend
Lee Lorenz exactly what I was thinking
Manhunter also uses this kind of eerie atmosphere and music
Bang on
The kiss was him saying goodbye. Things would never be the same after that.
Daniel Sobral well did it have to be? why didn't he just break the guys neck or take him out in some more civilized manner? He didn't have to make himself look like a complete psycho by stumping the guy's head into mush...
Casey Gunther. Well, I don't think he is a professional assassin. He seems to be someone that for unfortunate circumnstances is used to live in a violent world. So I don't think he really knew any other way of doing things. But he did knew beforehand that this would have to be the end of the line for them.
He that makes sense that he may not have known a more appropriate technique for taking that guy out - but that doesn't explain why he couldn't have limited himself to a few head stomps rather than turning the guy's head into mashed potatoes. But as they say - it's a movie.
Because he wanted a normal life with Irene and Benicio, and it was in that moment that he knew he could never have that and it was all this guys fault in his mind
Casey Gunther that's who he really is. he's fucking violent and couldn't control it.
The closing shot of the scorpion is what really seals this as an amazing scene. Irene has finally been exposed to The Driver's true nature and she'll never be able to see him the same way again
Even his kiss was a sting
Wow...Nice...
Even the use of the background colors say something: He is in the elevator where the browns and yellows (warms colors) are, showing that he is confortable with that awfull thing he just did, and she, when leaves the elevator, is surrounded by blues and black, because that leave her in a cold place... damn the attention to detail in this movie...
Ookla Mok and the driver knows it too as he turns around
Nicolás Riveros l
That was very nice of the henchmen to let them kiss first
Lol.
The whole scene supposedly is happening very fast
Slow motion was used for the scene, meaning he was kissing a loved one. He knew it was his last kiss so that made it look longer. Amazing use of slow motion if you ask me.
He was such a gentleman!
I think you didn't get the part of the time stoped as they kissed
People really underrate Ryan Gosling in this for his supposed lack of acting, I don't know that many actors who could communicate as much with a look as he did when he turned around after Carey backed out of the elevator
+GiantSandles [Wrong address]
Janni Handsome I've seen people say that before, and I'm obviously saying it's *not* a lack of acting so I'm not really sure why you're getting pissy with me
+GiantSandles Sorry, I totally misread your comment!
+GiantSandles
those are the people who also don't understand Refn's style of directing. He's not a words-guy. Just look at "Bronson". There's a scene where Tom Hardy pretty much acts with his *forearm* (or rather: Where Hardy's forearm does all the acting). And it's awesome.
+GiantSandles Just wondering what your interpretation would be after implying that if you wouldn't mind sharing?
This is the most romantic thing I've ever seen in my life
watch heat... the part where val kilmers gf saves herself, their kid, and keeps him free, but they cant be together
god. the way he presses his hand into her before goin for it. fuuuuuck
If you thought this was romantic, you should watch "True Romance." It's this scene but in a feature length format.
Yeah his foot kissing the guys face...
Damn, you need to get out more, lol, but I know what you mean.
The moment Driver sees the gun, HE KNOWS he can never have her.
HE KNOWS he'll have to reveal himself.
He has five seconds of happiness left. Five seconds till that elevator hits the ground floor and she sees him for what he is. The scorpion.
Couldn't have said it better.
Save for the fact that the gun was never there guys.. only the driver sees it. And after he smashes him... does it look like the dude still has it?
But before the driver pushes him the henchman has his hand in his coat to grab something
I like how he pushes her into the light in the elevator, only to be enveloped in darkness
John Burton oh my God im so jealous. I would've digged to find the conclusion myself damn
Good stomp technique. Notice how he grabbed the hand rails for more stomp leverage.
that is... just..check dr
I love everything Wahlberg does.... AND SAYS !!!!!
Greatest comment I've ever read for this scene :P
sick fuck....
Mack Funzy
you better be taking notes. i want to see a marked improvement in your stompings at the end of Q2.
Not a single word was spoken in this scene, and it managed to be better than all of Twilight.
These two comments made me laugh. Not necessarily because they were funny, but because it's true. :p
Careful with your phrasing. You just implied that it's difficult to be better than Twilight.
Better than Twilight? People went and saw the Twilight movies over and over , not just one the movies, but all of the series. If these movies sucked they would have stopped at the first ones right? They didn't and the sales showed that. So please understand you may not like Twilight , but millions did over and over whether you like it or not. I like movies and glad you do as well. If we all liked the same thing , what a boring world that would be. Enjoy our differences and be nice. :)
***** Usually that's true but Twilight is not the only movie that's an example of a bad movie that sold really well. The main problems are with Bella, who is a "Mary Sue Character" that everyone likes for no explained reason and she has almost no flaws except that she's clumsy, an example of which is barely shown once and it's a tacked on flaw. Edward also falls in love with her for seemingly no reason. By definition of a character, neither of them are actually characters. The writer did that so that readers could place themselves in Bella's place and identify with her but when adapting it to a movie, that gives movie producers nothing to work with. But Bella is supposed to be an awkward social outcast. She isn't. She is the most popular girl in school on her first day.
That's just scratching the surface with the problems of that movie.
Trust me , teh movie is fine. You can rant on if you'd like. You can't keep people from loving what they love. Sorry :)
After killing the mobster when Gosling turns around, the way he looks at Mulligan is brilliant acting imo.
I promise you. In 10 years from now, acclaimed filmmakers will be saying "It was when I saw the elevator scene in Drive - that's when I knew I wanted to work in movies."
Well, that is exactly me
When I saw the elevator scene in drive, I just knew it.
maybeee
Hopefully me one day
This movie is overrated
@@의아이들 Piss off this movie is underrated
What an amazing piece of cinematography.
The transition from a slow-motion emotional scene into pure violence is masterfully done. The lighting and camera-work is superb. The background music fits the emotional content of this scene. It's just perfect!
Its bananas how good this scene is.
It's also driver showing his love for Irene right before she sees who he truly is
ok incel
hands down, absolutely no questions asked, this is literally my favorite movie and has been since it was released. everything about everything in Drive is just perfect. the subtle 80's inspired soundtrack and general feel, the lush cinematography, the driver's demeanor and his modest yet bold outfits, the tragic story, the tasteful use of violence, bryan cranston, the editing, pacing, camera angles, soundscapes, jesus christ i could go on forever. i cant see a movie coming out for a long time that will appeal to me more than Drive.
He's completely ruined at least one of his shoes.
And all of that guys head
I hope there is a shoe shinning station close by, cause that guys skull will really stain the leather.
It is almost 1 am, I am tired, and this comment made me laugh, then Dante of Merv made me laugh out loud.
a good usage
He knows he can't be with Irene. Before this scene, she is actually pissed at him for getting into all this trouble with gangsters. He's never loved anyone the way he's loved her, but he knows he would never be able to live life and grow old with her. The way he kills that guy; it's him expressing his anger and frustration. The guy is already dead after the first few stomps, but he's so upset knowing that he can't be with Irene that he keeps stomping at the guys face until his face is completely turned into mush. This incidentally scares Irene even more and she leaves the elevator without him.
JD Frank
Exactly the way I see the driver. He most probably has some mental health issues ( issues with relationship, perharps autism I don't know just a thought) and he knows that he's too diferent from her but he also fell in love with her. I'v never seen this scene under the frustation driven violence but I must admit you're totally right, this violence doesn't comes from nowhere or because he's a crazy guy it comes from his despair about his own life.
Rekay Rutherford what?
Excellent job explaining what everyone can clearly see.
such underrated movie, its amazing.
Andrei Cristof +1
Andrei Cristof what do you mean a cult movie?
Lilia Farrera A film that has acquired a cult following. Cult films are known for their dedicated, passionate fanbase, an elaborate subculture that engage in repeated viewings, quoting dialogue, and audience participation.
LouisPReynolds thank you! That makes so much sense :) I actually found Kavinsky the band and that led me to this movie :)
Andrei Cristof agree. Not underrated in the least I mean it got a 93% on RT and has made cult status. One of my favourite movies all time.
Scorpion wants to cross a river, but he can't swim. Goes to the frog, who can, and asks for a ride. Frog says, "If I give you a ride on my back, you'll go and sting me." Scorpion replies, "It would not be in my interest to sting you since as I'll be on your back we both would drown." Frog thinks about this logic for a while and accepts the deal. Takes the scorpion on his back. Braves the waters. Halfway over feels a burning spear in his side and realizes the scorpion has stung him after all. And as they both sink beneath the waves the frog cries out, "Why did you sting me, Mr. Scorpion, for now we both will drown?" Scorpion replies, "I can't help it, it's in my nature."
MultiNikke123 WHY WHAT?! WHYYYY WHATTTT WHAT WAS HE GOING TO SAYY?!?!!? and WHAT WAS THE SCORPION GOING TO REPLY BACK!

That is, the smoothest movie kiss I have ever seen.

Totally agree. The best screen kiss I've ever seen.
Watch cinema paradiso them
This scene really is the most beautiful scene I've ever watched
Everything. About the film is just truly beautiful and I can't praise it enough
watch Manhunter - Michael Mann
I say that all the time and rarely find someone who agrees as it’s my favorite scene ever in a movie..Means a lot of someone feels the same
One of the greatest scenes in modern cinema. They will be teaching this at film school for years to come. The lighting, camera work, lack of dialogue, the decision Driver has no choice but to make and the eternal finality of that choice. So much in 3 short minutes. Just brilliant.
this has to be one of my favourite kiss scenes in existence, truly blew me away
I felt like he kissed her for the last time. Thinking that after he kissed her, and knowing what he had to do, he would never get the chance to kiss her ever again with the same mutual feeling from her.
duh
This scene literally made my jaw drop.. it's beautifully done. I love when movies have scenes that actually look like movie scenes, if that makes any sense. When movies actually remind us that they're an art form, a way of expression.
Not the head that Ryan Gosling wanted that night!
+Colshy TheComedian thats very funny. i'm going to have to watch the whole film with some friends now so i can use that joke
+Colshy TheComedian hahahahahahhaaha
***** Your too dumb to get it inbred cabbage eater.
+Akrahm Joltevskoy You ain't a man if you're afraid to go down on your girl.
+Akrahm Joltevskoy If you're afraid to go down on women, it's probably because you're afraid of vaginas.
I notice that when he is saying goodbye to her, her head is pushed against the wall. But when he tries to pull away, she comes away from it holding on to his kiss like she wasn’t ready to let go yet. So beautiful
You kiss your loved one when words can longer express how you feel. This is his goodbye kiss to the girl. She won't see him the same way again. Such powerful scene, intense acting, fantastic film.
I love how that door slides between them like a solid wall, separating them forever and all we see is the scorpion on his jacket. Because at the end of the day, that's what he is. He cannot change his nature.
The door closes.
"It's just you and me now, smashed head."
You cannot harm a Twinkie!
Ever since “Drive”, Ryan Gosling won me over completely. Great actor.
It hurts so much to have the girl you love look at you as if you're some kind of monster. To know that your love will never be reciprocated because of who you are as a person. The sad puppy eyes the driver gives in this scene is priceless. It shows that he now knows all hope for a fulfilling life is gone.
Press Space to execute downed enemies
bruh
Arun Keshavadas yes
Arun Keshavadas ALL of Hotline Miami is a Drive reference. And yes.
Tip: Recklessness is rewarded.
>D< nice one!
This was my film of 2011 no questions asked
i still watch this since i love this movie now
Sir. I have seen thousands of movies. I worked at blockbuster for a few years back in the early 2000's. Even since then I try to seek out the best films. Drive, is my favorite movie of all time as well. Maybe it shouldn't be placed in the same category as my other favorites, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Empire Strikes Back, but it is that good.
Bradley Gray My favorite film in the last decade
what questions do you normally ask?
Such a brilliant scene. He as soon as the hitman gets on the elevator and he sees the gun, he knows that he will have to show his dark side to her and that it will never be the same. He knows they can never be together so he just destroys the guy. Takes it all out on this hitman. This scene seriously could not be any more perfect.
I love how protective he is of Irene! Yes, this scenes was very brutal. I think the whole purpose was, and if you've watched the movie you would understand more, he is trying to protect Irene from him. He loves her (that's why he pushes her behind him). He kisses her because he is not sure if he will ever get the chance again. He has to scare her away so that she doesn't get hurt. All of this happens due to the fact that he is in love with the girl.
this scene is so intense ..it says everything without a word being spoken..... and ryan gosling acting wow
Refn is really talented, I think this is one of the most artistic action films ever and I thought every scene was perfectly choreographed, I don't really like his follow up films, but Drive really shows how brilliant he is!
He has a huge crush on the girl. So he showed her in sign language.
MrRodQ well played sir. well played
Driver was playing Dead Space right before.
i see what you did there
gotta make sure their dead man
When in doubt, stomp it out!
***** Thanks, man! :D
Oh, sorry. Thanks, lady!
It's funny that the whole movie he keeps being calm, less emotional and suddenly in this scene he turns into a fucking beast
Starting at 0:40:
Male fantasy in three easy steps
a) protect the girl
b) kiss the girl
c) kill the bad guy
You missed. It's:
a) protect the girl
b) kiss the girl
c) kick the shit out of the bad dude's skull repeatedly until it has the consistency of pureed tomatoes
d) turn around and take a bow
Let's get this straightened out:
a) Be Ryan Gosling
b) Protect the girl
c) Kiss the girl
d) break your shoes in
e) look good while doing it
Didn't happen. (yet)
Just heard so much about it from my friends that I don't even want another serious relationship.
lmao it was brutally graphic
more like:
a) realize that you're too deep in shit and you'll never be together with someone you love, standing right beside you
b) kiss the girl
c) beat the shit out of the bad guy out of desperation
d) cry
I played this scene out in an elevator one time, but I don't think the poor bastard was in the mob he was just headed to his hotel room.

This is probably my favorite scene from any movie ever. The mix of perfect lighting, direction, cinematography, and my god that soundtrack! The entire score in this scene is brilliant and beautiful but the sounds from 0:55-0:57 specifically is pure nirvana. Like I believe that's what heaven sounds and feels like. So perfect
When you finally kill that one motherfucking enemy in Dead Space
It's really sad that nobody understands this movie.
The kiss was NOT his imagination. He kissed her because he knew that she was about to be exposed to his darker side and this was the last time she would ever know him as a nice, charming guy.
This film has a VERY complex meaning that you won't understand if you are like any other mainstream movie-goer who thinks that a movie is better when it has more action sequences and car chases.
The excess use of violence in this scene is BEYOND necessary. Throughout the whole film he simply wanted to live a normal life out of crime. She was his only hope of accomplishing this and in this scene he realizes that there is no escaping the life he chose(which is why at the end he abandons them). This scene demonstrates Driver taking all of his anger out on this henchman.
Most people believe that Driver is a violent, ruthless murderer but you can tell that before getting involved with Bernie and Nino, he was very organized with his crime and remained well under the radar. Hell, he probably never killed a single person before those two came along!
We all have our opinions but please do some research about the true meaning(s) of this film before you make ridiculous comments about how good or bad it is and remember that there is a lot more to a film than action sequences.
***** No problem sir :)
Very nice analyzation.
***** Thank you sir :)
I always try to say this same thing to people but halfway through my explanation I get pissed off at the fact that I actually have to explain it to them. I just start calling people idiots and pea-brains and then come off as an idiot myself for resorting to name calling.
Its one of my favourite movies, but I've always had a more cynical outlook towards the movies subtext. It's kind of a Travis Bickle Taxi Driver thing with Ryan Gosling's character. The way Gosling put his character in an interview was "This is a guy who has watched allot of movies and now to him he's the main character in his his movie". So for me it was always more of a story about a sociopathic character trying to be the hero in his own action movie. The kiss (even though I do believe he felt affection towards her) was more about being the good guy and acting heroically in his own mind than showing his full affections to Mulligan's character for the first time. Its like how killed Albert Brook's character and then left the money with his corpse. He's the hero in his own mind, the money isn't the goal.
class scene... and carey mulligan is absolutely beautiful in it.
"He was gonna hurt you, Jenny!"
Sean Doherty lol
2:51 - The pained "what have i done" look on Gosling's face is incredible. ACTING!
♫ _If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet..._ ♪
I absolutely love this scene. As said below he realizes that like in the end of the story he's the scorpion and it's in his nature. He kisses the hell out of her trying to savor the last bit of happiness he knows he'll ever have and trying to portray his feelings all in one kiss. His expression while kissing her, oh my god I just it makes me melt. It's like she's his one and only. And he has to let her go. The whole scene is quite beautiful the music literally draws everything out and the use of the slow motion makes you take in everything slowly the way the kiss must've felt. Those last precious seconds. The lighting is brilliant I'm honesty so shook by this scene. It's amazing. Then the zoom in on his scorpion at the end literally broke my heart. Their expressions when the elevator closed, so sad, heartbreaking, heart wrenching.
What a crushing day... the driver was crushing on the girl, the hitman got his head crushed, and how that came to pass crushed her soul.
I love how his body starts to envelope hers around 1:05, like a shield. It's so touching and visually stunning. Such wonderful acting here
All I care is that sick jacket
that jacket is pretty sick
it's a shame he got blood all over it
That sick is pretty jacket.
Yeah and a bit of skull bone too lol
That pretty is jacket sick.
I just love, how much the scene literally gets darker when he pushes her away.
"Goodbye baby, don't wait for me."
This is such a powerful and beautiful scene, by far my favorite of the whole movie. The intense beauty of the kiss followed by the almost over the top brutality of the violence is a real juxtaposition. The lighting, music and overall feel of the scene changes in a matter of moments. It shows the bipolar nature of Gosling's character.
Brutal piece of art
Great movie
One of my favorite kisses I’ve seen in a movie (if not my favorite). An absolutely gorgeous moment with the softening lighting, how gentle and sweet it is between these two characters, and the music is just.... sublime. And then he stomps the guy’s head in with his heel.
She NEVER asked him his name.
She should know who Ryan Gosling is

This is the scene that opened my eyes to the power and importance of cinematography. Before, I would base my opinion of a movie solely on the story or the special effects. Then, by chance, I watched this. The lighting, the music, the camera angles, the sudden yet seamless transition from peace to violence, the fact that the entire scene takes place in a 5 by 5 box amazed me. I was astounded by how so much said without a line of dialogue. This scene completely changed the way I watch movies.
So brutal, they don’t even show the carnage. Though you’re aware Driver has the guy’s brains on his boot
I love how the light dims to highlight their moment. Filmmaking at its finest.
i can't even begin to describe how much i love the kiss. it's so full of emotion and when they stare at each other afterwards omg it gets me everytime.
The style of this movie really reminds me of Hotline Miami.
Was just thinking that, the lack of music, the brutal violence, and the lighting is what I think really does it
DWProductions87
Lack of music? HM and Drive are known for having amazing soundtracks.
Hotline Miami is actually inspired from "Drive". I cant remember well but it think it was when the game ends. you can see it in credits

Best chemistry I saw in a film couple... Amazing, he is indeed a real hero
A real human bean
+TRAVISOREEL and a real hero
A real hero.. that needlessly uses extreme violence and is likely mentally unstable. Cool story.
some will see a straight foward, simple scene. it's amazing how much story there is in this moment. it tells more than you think, and it's beautiful.
You can definitely see the influence of Kubrick in the angles and cinematography at times.
I love this scene because the kiss is so pure . He shows her his heart . What he felt for her . The way he softly drags her to the corner . The way he touches her . The light and the shadow , the music. It gives you the feeling that they found peace for a single moment. Pure beauty.

Amazing film, amazing scene, amazing imagery, amazing acting, amazing symbolism, amazing directing, amazing cinematography…do I have to go on?
I must say, "Drive" really is very "Grand Theft Auto"-like because of its storyline, characters, style, and graphic nature. A rather marvelous film of recent years!
Agreed.. The opening credits of the movie reminded me of GTA Vice City. This was a good movie.. Well writen, good casting.. Nuff said..

HOTLINE MIAMI!
Not to mention, Driver kinda reminds me of Claude from GTA III since he is very quiet throughout the movie.
You should watch 'Heat' if your into a Gta style narrative, characters and setting
Yeah man Heat was freaking dope also...
One of the best movies ever made. It's just epic and I didn't realize looking back about this being the last scene of them together.
It's easily in my top ten as everything is so perfect. It could have been a silent movie it was that strong. Music , cinematography. This is a perfect 10 for me. He is a "real human being". Legend
