    this scene is so brilliant.. he realizes that in order to protect her he has no choice but to show her the violent animal he's capable of being and knows once he does she'll always fear him.. so he lovingly kisses her while he still can..

      paul Z My bf also said that part of the reason he's so brutal with this guy is because he realises that as long as people like that are after him, he's never gonna be able to with her. There's a lot of sadness in this scene but there's anger here too.

    • @samuelkergroach5482
      @samuelkergroach5482 9 років тому +14

      paul Z I'll have the same idea about this scene, but maybe the kiss never happened. That's just his true wish (And ours).
      Look at the lights, the time is slowing down, that seems is just a dream.
      He wants this kiss, but he had to protect her so he only dream of that moment, knowing that he never happen after what he had to do.
      That's just my theory and that make this scene more sad.

      paul Z Samuel Kergroach I totally agree with both of you! This scene is so powerful showing those 2 sides inside him which are so opposite: ruthless violence vs love and caring

    • @markkickmark
      @markkickmark 9 років тому +4

      Samuel Kergroach No, he kisses her, for sure. But the kiss is a way of him temporarily stepping out of his reality. He is lost while kissing her, but then realizes that reality is that guy with the gun, who is trying to kill what he loves and that means the real him must do what the real him does.

      The director uses lighting dramatically throughout the film. I haven't seen lighting used like this since the Colonel Kurtz scenes in Apocalypse Now. Very telling of the duality of the character, the soul torn between what he wants to be, and what must be done. So powerful.

      Casey Gunther. Well, I don't think he is a professional assassin. He seems to be someone that for unfortunate circumnstances is used to live in a violent world. So I don't think he really knew any other way of doing things. But he did knew beforehand that this would have to be the end of the line for them.

    • @beowulfCG

      He that makes sense that he may not have known a more appropriate technique for taking that guy out - but that doesn't explain why he couldn't have limited himself to a few head stomps rather than turning the guy's head into mashed potatoes. But as they say - it's a movie.

    • @VNVgirl
      @VNVgirl 8 років тому +6

      Better than Twilight? People went and saw the Twilight movies over and over , not just one the movies, but all of the series. If these movies sucked they would have stopped at the first ones right? They didn't and the sales showed that. So please understand you may not like Twilight , but millions did over and over whether you like it or not. I like movies and glad you do as well. If we all liked the same thing , what a boring world that would be. Enjoy our differences and be nice. :)

    • @HumanoidMachine
      @HumanoidMachine 8 років тому +16

      ***** Usually that's true but Twilight is not the only movie that's an example of a bad movie that sold really well. The main problems are with Bella, who is a "Mary Sue Character" that everyone likes for no explained reason and she has almost no flaws except that she's clumsy, an example of which is barely shown once and it's a tacked on flaw. Edward also falls in love with her for seemingly no reason. By definition of a character, neither of them are actually characters. The writer did that so that readers could place themselves in Bella's place and identify with her but when adapting it to a movie, that gives movie producers nothing to work with. But Bella is supposed to be an awkward social outcast. She isn't. She is the most popular girl in school on her first day.
      That's just scratching the surface with the problems of that movie.

    • @VNVgirl
      @VNVgirl 8 років тому

      Trust me , teh movie is fine. You can rant on if you'd like. You can't keep people from loving what they love. Sorry :)

    He knows he can't be with Irene. Before this scene, she is actually pissed at him for getting into all this trouble with gangsters. He's never loved anyone the way he's loved her, but he knows he would never be able to live life and grow old with her. The way he kills that guy; it's him expressing his anger and frustration. The guy is already dead after the first few stomps, but he's so upset knowing that he can't be with Irene that he keeps stomping at the guys face until his face is completely turned into mush. This incidentally scares Irene even more and she leaves the elevator without him.

      Exactly the way I see the driver. He most probably has some mental health issues ( issues with relationship, perharps autism I don't know just a thought) and he knows that he's too diferent from her but he also fell in love with her. I'v never seen this scene under the frustation driven violence but I must admit you're totally right, this violence doesn't comes from nowhere or because he's a crazy guy it comes from his despair about his own life.

    Scorpion wants to cross a river, but he can't swim. Goes to the frog, who can, and asks for a ride. Frog says, "If I give you a ride on my back, you'll go and sting me." Scorpion replies, "It would not be in my interest to sting you since as I'll be on your back we both would drown." Frog thinks about this logic for a while and accepts the deal. Takes the scorpion on his back. Braves the waters. Halfway over feels a burning spear in his side and realizes the scorpion has stung him after all. And as they both sink beneath the waves the frog cries out, "Why did you sting me, Mr. Scorpion, for now we both will drown?" Scorpion replies, "I can't help it, it's in my nature."

    It hurts so much to have the girl you love look at you as if you're some kind of monster. To know that your love will never be reciprocated because of who you are as a person. The sad puppy eyes the driver gives in this scene is priceless. It shows that he now knows all hope for a fulfilling life is gone.

    I love how protective he is of Irene! Yes, this scenes was very brutal. I think the whole purpose was, and if you've watched the movie you would understand more, he is trying to protect Irene from him. He loves her (that's why he pushes her behind him). He kisses her because he is not sure if he will ever get the chance again. He has to scare her away so that she doesn't get hurt. All of this happens due to the fact that he is in love with the girl.

    It's really sad that nobody understands this movie.
    The kiss was NOT his imagination. He kissed her because he knew that she was about to be exposed to his darker side and this was the last time she would ever know him as a nice, charming guy.
    This film has a VERY complex meaning that you won't understand if you are like any other mainstream movie-goer who thinks that a movie is better when it has more action sequences and car chases.
    The excess use of violence in this scene is BEYOND necessary. Throughout the whole film he simply wanted to live a normal life out of crime. She was his only hope of accomplishing this and in this scene he realizes that there is no escaping the life he chose(which is why at the end he abandons them). This scene demonstrates Driver taking all of his anger out on this henchman.
    Most people believe that Driver is a violent, ruthless murderer but you can tell that before getting involved with Bernie and Nino, he was very organized with his crime and remained well under the radar. Hell, he probably never killed a single person before those two came along!
    We all have our opinions but please do some research about the true meaning(s) of this film before you make ridiculous comments about how good or bad it is and remember that there is a lot more to a film than action sequences.

      Its one of my favourite movies, but I've always had a more cynical outlook towards the movies subtext. It's kind of a Travis Bickle Taxi Driver thing with Ryan Gosling's character. The way Gosling put his character in an interview was "This is a guy who has watched allot of movies and now to him he's the main character in his his movie". So for me it was always more of a story about a sociopathic character trying to be the hero in his own action movie. The kiss (even though I do believe he felt affection towards her) was more about being the good guy and acting heroically in his own mind than showing his full affections to Mulligan's character for the first time. Its like how killed Albert Brook's character and then left the money with his corpse. He's the hero in his own mind, the money isn't the goal.

    I absolutely love this scene. As said below he realizes that like in the end of the story he's the scorpion and it's in his nature. He kisses the hell out of her trying to savor the last bit of happiness he knows he'll ever have and trying to portray his feelings all in one kiss. His expression while kissing her, oh my god I just it makes me melt. It's like she's his one and only. And he has to let her go. The whole scene is quite beautiful the music literally draws everything out and the use of the slow motion makes you take in everything slowly the way the kiss must've felt. Those last precious seconds. The lighting is brilliant I'm honesty so shook by this scene. It's amazing. Then the zoom in on his scorpion at the end literally broke my heart. Their expressions when the elevator closed, so sad, heartbreaking, heart wrenching.

Then, by chance, I watched this. The lighting, the music, the camera angles, the sudden yet seamless transition from peace to violence, the fact that the entire scene takes place in a 5 by 5 box amazed me. Nah if Driver had the Tony Mask he didn't have to go through the trouble of smashing that guys skull in. Driver just could gave a good punch and bam skull explosion

    That kiss was a kiss goodbye. To her and to the posibilities he felt his future may have had with her. He knew what was gonna happen as soon as he spotted the gun and he knew that afterwards she would be lost to him. Great stuff

    I think what I love about this scene is how it takes a complete 180 in such a short time
