Another great video! I love the dog pee pad idea. One thing about your videos is that you are always appropriately and comfortably dressed. It may seem small but it really enhances your message when viewers are able to look into your eyes and nothing else when you speak. Love your commitment.
I see this beautiful young woman as a model. Her mannerisms, smile and ability to speak so naturally tell me she is the deal ! the right package. When she started l thought oh my another Nomad pretty face. Well there's plenty of excellent gray material under her lovely hair. WoW!
Awesome ideas! A small tip that I use when I need to make holes through anything plastic. I hear a screwdriver or one of those chef knife sharpeners (the type that you glide the knife up and down the length of it). I heat them over an open flame, eg, gas stove. They melt holes through plastic like butter. Saves on drilling or cutting holes. Love you, Norma from Sydney Australia
That’s a greay idea! I have been using my hair dryer to heat up the plastic a bit first and get a good result.and I have poured very warm water over the needed area in a pinch not boiling obviously but hot. I like your idea better though. 🇺🇸
Hi Dee great ideas. Thank you. I have a hack you may like. When using showers in a camp ground you are confinded to a small area and the floor gets pretty wet. I find it akward to dry my feet then put my pants on without getting the trousers and underwear wet. I have started taking a hand towel and using this as a mat after I have a shower. It helps a lot.
To make a hole in plastic, try using an inexpensive heat element used for soldering or wood burning. Practice on another bottle and you should master it in no time!👍🏼🥰
Super hacks. I love the Berkey dupe. Those things have doubled in price. I think I am going to make one for my daughter. Thanks for sharing your instructions with us. 😊
Plenty of good hacks. I did a similar Berkey System about 5 years ago. Instead of a spigot on the bottle I dropped a 12 volt pump into the clean water vessel & have a counter spigot with a toggle switch. That way I was able to permanently secure the two vessels behind a cabinet out of the way.
@@LadyBugout Ya - it's nice because I have by my sliding door - the gooseneck spigot swivels so I can easily get water from inside or outside the van. & my sink is right there so I can fill the Berkey with my sink's faucet. I also glues a 2.5 inch diameter PVC pipe to the bottom of the top vessel to help protect the stem on the bottom of the filter & it the PVC helps lock in the top vessel into the bottom one.
Where does the hose from the pump come out of the bottom water vessel? Did you just put it through a hole near the top? Submersible pumps are always my preferred water system on the road.
@@Tonisuperfly The pump wire & the hose come out of the same hole from the top (lid) of the bottom vessel (I did not install a grommet as I have not had an issue with leaks). Another important factor is that in my set up my top vessel is 2 litres & the bottom vessel is 3 litres. That way you are less likely to overfill the bottom vessel. BTW - I used larger Nalgene style vessels (just because they are proven to be way tougher - which is important in a van.
The awl tool on a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife will give you a much better hole-cutting experience in plastic. Thank you for sharing your helpful solutions.
These are some very useful tips and suggestions, thank you. I like the dog pee mat idea as keeping as much moisture out of the van or at least, under control is important as you know. Safe travels.
Brilliantly done!! I am a Berkey user and I will let you know that they do take a bit to filter the water through but at the same time.. it is not often that you need a whole gallon or even a half gallon in one sitting. I usually make sure to keep extra made up so that I don't completely run dry. Also, it is recommended that you run water through it on the regular and don't let it stay dry longer that a day. Then it will take longer to get it going again
Awesome hacks.. for dishwashing I've been using a one spray bottle method..... 50/50 water and distilled vinegar then add as many lemon essential oil drops as it takes for the vinegar smell to be gone..lol... I also use one with eucalyptus for any potential pest problem and fabric freshener... zero pest problems so far and people always comment on how nice my van smells.. this is my 2nd winter vanlifing the west coast of Florida in my 2013 FTC :) .. we chatted about my rooftop deck before you got yours..lol... yours look awesome btw.. thanks for sharing..

These are some of the best actual hacks I've seen! I love that I have another reason to buy more kula cloths now too. Great berkey tutorial, thanks for sharing.💚
You are a very creative lady! I always enjoy seeing and hearing you demonstrate and explain hacks! You keep it real. When I saw the container shift on you while trying to drill in, I nearly gasped, then thought that’s exactly what would have happened if I or anyone did it solo; and it worked out great!
great water filter. think ill build one. will make the lower bottle larger to keep it bottom heavy. Please get safety glasses for tool use. Dont want you to hurt your Bug Eyes
Excellent ideas! For the water filter, if you find the top container leaks because the bottom is not flat, flip it up side down and have drill a hole in the lid like you did on the bottom container and have the containers meet lid to lid - you can repair the hole in the bottom of the top container with the same stuff you used for the spigot - great idea though ❣️👏👏👏👏
I just changed out my Berkey filter so the old filter was on hand. I had a big white plastic jar from some energy powder from Costco. I installed the filter to the lid. What I found is that the jar can not be air tight or water won’t flow. If I poke a hole in the bottom of the jar water and air will flow as well as leak when it is upright. A piece of duck tape or a hole and a cork might help with flow. I was able to set the jar on top of another bigger jar with a spigot. For now my old filter is soaking in the jar.
I fixed it! I glued the top and lid of a gallon water jug to the bottom of the jar. First I cut the top of the gallon water jug off right below the flange below the threaded part at the top. That left the cap and the part it screws on to with a flange. I cut a hole and pushed the threaded end through and glued it in. I’m thinking you could instead just put a spigot on the top jug and opened it to take care of the air vacuum. I released the jug lid and the filter end started dripping. I just put the top jar into a slightly bigger jar minus it’s lid. I believe a plastic water jar would be less likely to leak at the lid than the powder jar like I used. The right sized jar might just fit on a pitcher for filtering then just bottle the water for drinking . The cap or spigot would keep the filter from drying out. You don’t want the filter to freeze. You want to keep the whole thing out of sunlight so you don’t get mold or algae.
Good afternoon Dee. I'm glad to see you're doing well... fit and fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing your hacks for enjoying van life at it's fullest, you multi-talented and industrious offgrid woman - living and camping in the Great Outdoors. 😍😊
Hello Lady ! Watching you from France since the beginning! You are a source of joy and I do like the way you are sensitive to harmonious things. 🎉❤ Concerning the Berkey, I got one at home and the reason why the filtration is faster is because there is a kind of air leak between both tanks. So what you can go is to warm a needle and create a little hole on the bottom lid 🙌🥳 Thanks 🙏 and love to you.
I’m not in a van yet - but at home I use a portable bidet spray bottle and a facecloth for drying. Keeps me fresh. Keep a 2 litre bottle of water on the floor to refill as needed.

I generally use vinegar in my spray bottle, occasionally lemon juice both have some insect repellent ability as well as killing germs.. both are also good for cleaning yourself if you arent worried about drying out your skin. water mixed with vinegar or lemon or alcohol work great to clean under your arms or wash your feet after sweating a lot and a shower or stream isnt handy. those p pads are really interesting... I have those light canvas pencil bags in several of my bags, they are easily decorated with sharpie markers or other alcohol based inks and also take spray paint pretty well, of course you need a blocker inside so it doesnt bleed.. The ones currently at our Dollar.25 Tree are zipped at one end with a shoulder cord.. I like that filter set up, I was going to do a double 5gal bucket type but I found a large 1gal pur pitcher with 6new filters at a thrift store for $10 about 2yrs ago and still have 2 filters left (our tap water is NASTY) I ended up buying a smaller version for traveling
You are a woman’s of all trades! Excellent and easy water filter system! You did a fantastic “how to” intro cation as well. I also like your other ideas 😎 Thank for sharing such informative and entertaining videos Dee !
We have that same scraper, it works great! We have a sink but when we are being super careful with water we use a two spray bottle system a sailor taught us. We have one with heavily diluted dish soap (biodegradable so we can dump it when we are away from water sources) and one with plain water. We spritz with the diluted soap and clean then rinse with the plain water. It works great and uses so little water.
I did try that. Someone said maybe I need a tube through both lids to let air pressure out??? I’ll see if it speeds up. I’m not too worried. It’s not my primary water source. So, if it takes an hour or two and I know it has filtered well, that is more important for now😜🤗☺️
Yes spray bottle super efficient for the water if I did that would use food grade plastic at the bare minimum. Small ceramic dispenser with plastic top half ideal but breakable RO machines are everywhere
Your ideas are awesome. I have a gallon and half jug from laundry detergent that already has a push button spiget. I could possibly add the top jug with filter. Gonna have to make this work for my van...Thank You

WTG Dee and your creative ingenuity on your improvised "berkey" was brilliant. If space becomes a factor, you may want to consider using a Sawyer or Katadyn BeeFree filter like backpackers use. The BeFree cartridge is $24 and if a Hydrapack Seeker collapsible bag is $30 for 1 gallon ($25 for 1/2 gallon) - the beauty is that it folds up very tightly (you can hold the two parts in your hands) with the Katadyn good for 1,000 uses and the filter is easy to clean out when needed if the flow slows down). Happy Trails, Michael and Grace
Your washing up suggestion is brilliant. I’m disabled. I try to do what I can but it upsets me to know how much time my carers spend on washing up. I can do what you do. I’ve tried various things to cut down on washing up but it usually means buying disposables. I will buy some h202 and a spray bottle right away

Nice tips. Adventure Van Man used vinegar in a spray bottle to clean his cook ware.
Nice! Yep, whatever you can do to use less water🤗
You are amazing 🤩 love how you figure out so many nifty ways to do things. You're a rockstar baby. 👏🎉❤️
You're the best! Thanks for the positive encouragement 🥰
Filters build up molds especially when not refrigerated. Usually should be changed out every 3-4 months.
Good to know!
Yep! Sounds like a great system.
Maybe if you loosen the top lid will allow better suction. I love all these hacks, thanks.
I did try that. Someone said maybe I need a tube through both lids to let air pressure out??? I’ll see if it speeds up. I’m not too worried. It’s not my primary water source. So, if it takes an hour or two and I know it has filtered well, that is more important for now😜🤗☺️
Great inspiration for thinking outside the box! I’m making note of every one!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful💪🏼
Love your mindset and industriousness!
I appreciate that, Patricia☺️
Thanks for sharing Dee. Love the water system.
Thanks for watching, Leilani☺️
💕You’ve got it all together!
Lol not quite…but thanks for the encouragement ☺️
For dishwashing I use cheap vodka.
Do you drink your used dishwashing liquid? Flavored vodka
Good to know😜
Yes spray bottle super efficient for the water if I did that would use food grade plastic at the bare minimum. Small ceramic dispenser with plastic top half ideal but breakable RO machines are everywhere
Yes, I use food grade!
Your ideas are awesome. I have a gallon and half jug from laundry detergent that already has a push button spiget. I could possibly add the top jug with filter. Gonna have to make this work for my van...Thank You
Interesting idea! Hope it works🤗💪🏼💃🏻
Such well thought out ideas. I will be adopting a few of these hacks. Thank you so much!
Glad you found them useful🤗
I live sticks and bricks.. the berkey hack is genius! I plan on using that for office and home!❤
Yay! Hope it works well for you😊
@@LadyBugout I bought the 7c life straw water pitcher.. but the Berkey Hack is gallons ahead of the water safety! With the Palestine Ohio situation.. the reality of filtering water is everyone’s need! Safe journeys my friend- West Michigan living❤️
great idea on the pad !
Glad it was useful!
A COUPLE YEARS BACK I GOT THE MINI BERKEY SS MODEL, NO REGRETS BUT YA, SAVE UP! I ALSO HAVE THE HACK FOR HOME USING THE CHEAP SS WALMART KETTLES TO MAKE A HIGH VOLUME BERKEY FILTER FOR SHTF. ALWAYS BE PREPARED.
White vigar works also
Yep! Great tip. Thanks.
Great idea o. The Berkey, I bought one from them and it’s very expensive , thanks for the great idea, you did well ,
Glad it was helpful!🥹
Oh wow! You're a genius! Beyond helpful! Sorry I've missed your videos for a while! The bell got turned off!
I’m so glad it was helpful! 💃🏻
Thanks for the tip.😊
Your washing up suggestion is brilliant. I’m disabled. I try to do what I can but it upsets me to know how much time my carers spend on washing up. I can do what you do. I’ve tried various things to cut down on washing up but it usually means buying disposables. I will buy some h202 and a spray bottle right away
I’m glad it is a useful idea for you.
Thanks for sharing Dee
Mercury Bill.
I’m down in Florida now for a couple months.
