There is a requirement for a chess calender for Fans. The players know which tournaments happen and where they happen, but FIDE needs to put a calendar out for Fans and also schedule events ahead of time. FIDE also needs to advertise and improve its social media presence to draw more eyes to its tournaments.
They should take some ideas from the ATP tennis circuit.
I am somewhat surprised that this video has received very few views. Whoever is in charge of managing FIDE's social media accounts should consider promoting it through other chess influencers like Hikaru and Levi. While it may seem a bit pushy, it is a shame to see such a great interview with so few views.
Glad that Emil was so willing to talk about the actual economics of putting on these events. It sometimes looks so obvious what FIDE should do but the logistical and economic complications are immense.

Personally, I am inclined to side with him.
Chess has survived for thousands of years without being commercial. Trying to make it such by sacrificing everything else is not the way forward. I also don't think Chess will ever be a major TV sport no matter how short the games are. It is actually much harder for regular people to follow blitz, because you need a very good understanding of the game.
I think the Candidates & WC is perfectly good system (I just disagree about how people qualify to it).
Emil was a 2700+ player once so its good that a former high rated professional is in the upper echelons of organising the game
Levy has increased the popularity of the game so much that I think it would be great if FIDE would introduce some kind of title or honorary adward for the work that these persons are doing.

Levys value to the game is becoming more and more evident. This interview, for most, would fly under the radar if Levy wasnt in it. Add Levy and boom.
90+30+30 is a perfect tempo for classical chess.
I hope classical will never die out, that would be the biggest tragedy in chess history. It's the purest, traditional, most prestigious, basic form of chess. We can have other formats, we can have Fischer random, we can have anything, but classical chess should always remain the most important and should never die out.

What a great interview raising some very interesting questions in relation to the future modernisation of the game.
I think the thing is, if you really think it's not feasible to have a large scale knockout tournament once a month that's fine, even once a quarter would probably be fine. The issue is less the frequency of tournaments, but it's the fact that as a fan, unless it's the Candidates/World Championship, or Wijk aan Zee, it's really hard to just get the info on what tournaments are happening with big players. In tennis you have the 4 grand slams that are regularly occurring, in football you always know when the champions league or the world cup is happening. In chess a tournament with like 8 of the top 10 players playing will just show up one day, and even people relatively invested in watching live classical chess won't know until it's happening. I think there needs to be a better system for disseminating this information within chess.
FIDE should focus on a clear calendar, and trying to get into the North American sports audience/TV .. Swiss System Rapid with short enough time control (5+5?) .. or 8 player super tournaments 1 day knockout .. OTB with great coverage.
Also a big draw is the PERSONALITIES of the chess world, not even the chess. Documentaries, player promos, etc. Players like Anish, Nodirbek, Hans, Jennifer Yu, Carissa that can bring fans.
I've been following chess since I was a child. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to think about the time formats. Very few people follow a game that lasts 5-6 hours. I don't either these days. I have a stream running and occasionally watch it and then I wait for Agatmator und Gotham to do an analysis. The only classical game in recent years that I couldn't take my eyes off was Magnus - Nepo game 6 of their match. Short time formats are much more fun to watch. I also often hear that from friends who don't watch as much chess as I do.
I have never played a classical game in my life. I’ve played 3-2 for over a year every day and will analyze my games. I’ve definitely rapidly learned chess this way. So I disagree that kids can’t learn proper chess with faster time controls. In fact, a 10 minute game feels so long to me that I end up calculating a lot because I’m bored waiting for my opponent. And if you look at the top players, the ones with more games and endgames under their belt tend to have a better chance of winning. And this tracks with my experience too. As I played more games, I recognized positions faster and learned from my mistakes. In this sense, I’d argue that shorter games are better for kids to learn. They can focus for the whole game, feel less frustrated with a loss, and gain experience with positions, repetition and pattern recognition much faster.
For a mere mortal it's nice to know that there's shit going on at an extREMELY high (deep) level in a top chess game that I cannot approach to fathom - at all. That's part of the fascination of top chess for me.
T'would be sad if that sorta went away even if it was no longer neccesary for winning the faster games in case classical was dropped.
And Mr. Sutovsky's point, that You can only become extrEEMELY good through classical format, supports that feel.
But does it hold? Levy didn't seem to buy it. Will future future top level players be unable to reach Magnus/Kasparov level if they're never forced to sit through loooooong games?
And does it matter, if what we say now constitutes 'best player' (their level) is their rapid/long rapid rating, and who cares how good they are at classical, classical is booooring' and not at all a measurement of how good You are'?

At the end of the interview, I was as sad as Levy looked. We are living a chess boom right now that won't be truly capitalized if there are no serious talks about future formats and incorporating Fischer random as a legitimate FIDE mode. I am sure donors appreciate the beauty of the game beyond the boring traditions...

He is basically a politician. Empty, vapid and meaningless word salad is their area of specialty.
FIDE is not willing to move chess into the modern day and it is really sad to see. No, I will not buy tickets to events, watch games live. I would rather watch recaps on youtube because DUE TO THE TIME CONTROLS chess is not fun to watch.
I am watching Candidates these two weeks and having a great time. Of course, quality commentary is a must. But classical chess is the best, it's the ultimate chess.
FIDE is just happy to not sell the game, and having only top superGMs make a living of it. They have many tournaments that are played with donated money. I mean, if you want people to care and grow the game, you have to leave the traditions. No one is asking to change the candidates format to bullet, but what is the problem with 60+30 for example. Why not focus on rapid tournaments of 15-30 minutes, which is great balance of quality, watchability and drama. He is talking like chess quality and teachings would be lost, and like chess is in a great situation, like more than a handfull of players csn make a living of only playing. FIDE sucks
