  • Soooo, Bitwave released a port of Batsugun on Steam in 2024 a part of the
Toaplan Arcade Collection. City Connection released a port of Batsugun on Steam in 2023. Which one is the better Batsugun port? Which one should you buy?
Btw, Bitwave is currently updating and patching some of the bugs in the game, so what you may see now may not be in a future version of the port. I may make an update video when more of the egregious bugs.

I've bought almost all of Bitwave's ports thus far. One note about them is that they tend to launch buggy, but they patch a lot and relatively quickly. Like, Batsugun already has one audio patch installed just days after launch. While this does mean they probably rushed the game out, it seems like the Bitwave port will be better over time considering the input lag. Also, I dunno if you had this problem with the CC port, but the audio would often get really messed up when I loaded from a save state and sometimes the game itself slowed down.

i heard the CC port had crashes at first, i didnt really experience that on my end, but im glad they patched those things

    Very good review I thought!
To me, the input lag on the City Connection port kills it. I don't view that as something that is up to preference, low input lag is a requirement that had to be given.

    Go for the Bitwave version.
The S-Tribute version has input lag of six frames.

Hey! I appreciate you emphasizing whether the game is compatible with Portrait mode or not. You have NO idea how many Steam Shmups are.only compatible with landscape/horizontal screens.

thanks, its really important for me since i have a dedicated vertical/portrait monitor setup

@desmaku87 same here. I have a Vewlix cab dedicated to shmups with a verticle screen as well, so it's a pain when buying a shmup that people say can TATE, but they don't mention it only TATEs in landscape.

such a shame if you combined the positives it would be a pretty great port
I bought the CC version just for the arrange soundtrack, which is excellent, but I quickly went back to mame due to the lag.
There's a hack for the saturn version to include the new soundtrack if I had a saturn I'd probably play that.

yeah i guess we will need to wait for m2stg to take a shot at it or wait for the exa version exclusively to run out

Nice review Des! I have the City Connection port on PS4 and find the input lag grating (I'm probably more sensitive to it than most people) so I would probably recommend with Bitwave in spite of the poor presentation and bugginess.

The version on Xbox is the Saturn Tribute Boosted version for $30. Wonder if it's better or worse than the Steam version...?

Good coverage as always. I uh... bought the City Connection port twice (once on PC and once on Playstation), and I also own the Bitwave port too, lol.
Honestly, the Bitwave port is fine for the cost. It's hard to justify how much City Connection is charging for the S-Tribute release now that both are on the market. Also, Bitwave seems rather dedicated to patching and fixing their stuff so even if it's not great now, it might be better later on.
I doubt City Connection is fixing the insane input lag on their port 😂

Hmm just knowing about the lag would bug me, even if I would not feel it myself I would still blame it for dying :). This much lag probably even I can feel.. So basically i'm sticking with emulation for this one. If there was an m2 quality port, i'd go for it though, it's a very pretty game!

How about you, do you feel the difference in input lag and does that make it a deal-breaker on certain games?

    • @desmaku87
      @desmaku87  7 місяців тому +2

i feel a difference pretty easily, its a deal breaker for sure.

And you'd be right a lot of the time, that input lag will kill you if you notice it or not.

imo A big selling point of City Connection version is the boosted remix OST by famous Japanese composers. I got it on the switch on sale and that music was incredible. It's a bit laggy than the Bitwave's but Batsugun is more tolerable than most cave shmups so it's fine with me :)

Good review, lol i have like all the bitwave ports and didn't know it had brightness/contrast options lol.
Need to try city's port but i'm imagining it has input lag like emulated saturn which would make it unplayable to me.

its too bad because it has some nice UI and stuff. gotta wait to see what mtstg does with it...might take a while lol.

@@desmaku87 Yeah wish they worked with bitwave tbh for pc since they seem to have issues with windows past w7, one can dream.
