The 2021 US Open saw Russia's Daniil Medvedev and Great Britain's Emma Raducanu claim the men's and women's singles titles. Seeing her playing on empty courts at the beginning brings it home how massive this was.
Funnily enough her 2 hardest sets in the entire Tournament came in the Qualifying Rounds.
Yeah, she'll never be playing early rounds in front of empty seats again. To think the number of people that could have decided to watch her but didn't because no one expected anything
Yeah ! not to mention how annoying playing in ''wild'' organised ITF tournaments can be.
From basic "journeywoman" (digging in the trenches) to champ of the world (being at the very apex of the food chain) within 2 weeks! All that without losing a single set to 10 elite pros with more experience. This truly was one of those "impossible dreams."

It feels like the tennis world was waiting for someone like Emma Raducanu. The older players should appreciate having the opportunity to face such an incredible talent that I am sure reminds each and everyone of them of what inspired them to also play and compete. I am sure it is not about how many racquets they smash when things go wrong but it is about the eternal feeling that comes with winning and the strong connection between the crowds and the player at the very split second of winning the match. That feel lives forever. This young lady has the right attitude and trains very hard to create and experience these unique timeless moments. Such an inspiration to all loving this sport!
So,so right and no sqealing, nor grunting from either player. So refreshing. Such a little darling on and off the court.
No tantrums. No noise. No gamesmanship. Just hard, skilful, beautiful tennis. Women’s tennis just became really really watchable.
@@martinforrester8249 - I agree, all the grunters and attitudes are gone with Emma as a new champion. Tennis needs this so much!!!
@@cloudsmith7803 Agree with all of you so far.
If I may compare this to the men's side, the tennis world erased its 'bad boy image' and 'grunting' or...rackets' abuse when, some 30 years ago, a cool, super calm Bjorn Borg appeared on the final scenes and silently appeased left and right. Now Emma totally showed it to the female stage and world audience, including her natural and ...romantic, smooth... landing on the ground, after the last point. All in spite of the Covid oandemic.
Wunderbar! Wonderful, to say the least. And also Leyla Fernandez was..so composed in her press Q&As.
Total, exemplary tennis by both. Thank you, USTA!
Exemplary leadership, at her young 18 years of age!
@TravelerPat Not now, it isn't - just saying!
I`m 63 and can clearly remember the tail end of Rod Laver`s incredible career, I also saw a young Roger Federer destroy Lleyton Hewitt, the Wimbledon Champ at the time, and could see Federer as a future great, but I`ve never seen anything to rival what Emma has achieved at the US Open and with such grace too.

There was no pressure on her this tournament. Now there is enormous pressure. I hope she continues to brush it off the way she did these three weeks.
Indeed, it's odd to think that as of yet she hasn't yet lost a slam match in a conventional manner - just that one withdrawal. She will have to face down that moment at some point; everybody does.

@@martinforrester8249 they were great to watch and Emmas smile had me smiling all through the game,
I prefer the butch, plain Eastern European women champions! 😬
In terms of her playing style I'm reminded more of Agassi. Her game is built around a lethal return of serve that always gives her a platform to go hunting for service breaks. Couple that with a solid (if not spectacular) serve of her own, and an ability to strike the ball early on the rise, and she becomes an opponent that everyone is afraid of, who will tend to take part in exciting, dynamic matches.

The Emma and Leylah match was one of the best matches I have seen in a while. It was even better than the men's finals.
I really wish the women went to 5 sets, because just imagine if that match had played out to 5. It could have been up there with Fed v Nadal in the rain at wimbledon for epicness.
She won 6-4 6-3. It would take a miracle and then some for that match to turn in to something resembling the Fed vs Nadal Wimbledon final. Fernandez would've had to come back from two sets down to begin with. Also, no disrespect to women, but there's a reason they don't play best of 5.

Congrats to Emma, a qualifier. She’s the whole package. Talent, beauty, personality and youth. She’s the most marketable WTA champion since Jennifer Capriati. Hopefully she’ll be a leader in the sport for a decade or two. What a champion.
Capriati? Nope. There have been many better and more marketable players than Jennifer. But you are right about Emma she is the total package and her natural smile captivates everyone

@@rsb512 I agree. That's the retrospective view considering the whole career of Capriati. However, I think Steve refers exactly to the moment of the debut of Jennifer.
You couldn’t be more wrong. Jennifer Capriati was THE MOST MARKETABLE tennis player EVER. . . You likely weren’t around. She was huge. She was on the cover of Newsweek Magazine as a 13-year old!!!! She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 13-year old!! She made $6 Million in 1990 as a 14-year old! She had looks, personality, charisma and was the BEST YOUNG TENNIS PLAYER EVER. She won the Olympic Gold Medal at 16.
She got sidetracked, made some mistakes. But no one was as marketable as the 13-year old Jennifer Capriati. She and Monica Seles could have broken all the records. But, things happen. Still had a great Hall of Fame career.
Freeze frame at 8:00. This girl is on fire and that look in her eyes. . . .she is a killer. Pure determination. That's exactly what a champion looks like. And then she transforms into such a polite and personal young woman after she tears through the field of seeded players. Priceless.

Hollywood couldn't have dreamt of such a script. One day they'll make this into a film and call it "Perfect 10", in honour of the 10 straight games she won without dropping a set to capture the trophy.
And a nod to her game and looks, too.
Her smile and her style in that now iconic red blue and yellow outfit - oh - and that plaster on the knee, was always going to make her stand out, but then and above all else that skill, the determination, the game plan, the sportsmanship, the sheer fun she brings and the class have made her a star, but the way she did it, the outsider, the grit, the towering and momentous way she did it, will go down in history and will likely never be repeated. After Emma’s wonderful success in New York, as a fellow Brit I really hope she is given time to develop and grow as a player without a stack of media pressure being put on her. Emma has incredible talent and no weaknesses in her game, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to win every single time she plays and she’s sensible enough to know that. What I would hate to see is Emma being put down in the papers if she decides to go to Indian Wells in October and loses early, or if she loses early in Australia next year. Emma has such great potential for a great career, but I think we have to support her sensibly. She’s played just 4 senior level tournaments in her young career, two of them were Grand Slams, Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round and the US Open, which, obviously, she won, but let’s not assume she’s going to win every match she plays just yet and then complain if she doesn’t. I hope we will all give her the time and space she will need to get used to life on the WTA tour, because if we give her time and space now, I have no doubt she will have every chance of reaching her potential.
The best I've read since her win! 😊
I feel sure she will be looked after far better than Biles or Osaka (sp?) the USA has a win at any cost attitude which can be destructive, I never liked the way Serena played.

Didn't lose a set and none of the sets went to tie break (after the qualifiers). The final match point was won on an ace for the cherry on the top. Pretty much a perfect run.
I don't think there was a tie break even in the qualifier
@@nelimashihrii3375 there wasn’t. She was taken to 7-5 in one set in qualifying, but the rest of her score lines look relatively smooth. She had to work for it in New York though. Every opponent was higher ranked than her in the tournament and most had far more experience of the game at the top level. Belinda Bencic, for example, was 12 in the world when Emma played her, but Emma came through by playing very well. Her progress through her quarter of the draw was remarkable for one so young and inexperienced.
Perfect script for a film
@@tracyhodgkins7516 Her ranking was artificially low as she didn't play until the grass court season in June so her ranking was pretty much down to the 4th round in Wimbledon and the final of the challenger in Chicago as she didn't play a ranking tournament for 9 months of the year.. So covid, her education and inactivity was primarily the reason for her ranking. She did play in some 'Battle of the Brits' exhibition matches and you could clearly see that she was WAY better than 150 in the world.
If she'd have been playing all year she'd have been in the top 100. Her play at Wimbledon was significantly above her ranking then (300 and something) or 150.

You're the first person I've seen mention that she was well prepared for this victory. She's been a top junior player since she was 9 years old and people who follow grass roots tennis in the UK knew very well that one day she would burst onto the senior scene. Now that she’s learnt how to deal with nerves, Emma will be a force on grass in front of a home crowd, maybe not next year but it will happen, she absolutely loves Wimbledon, she’ll be the darling of SW19 for years to come.
What a wonderful talent we have. Congratulations Emma, may there be many more slams to come.
Definitely and also a true inspiration just like Hingis, Evert and Serena won whist they were a teenager. Just love how she won consistently without dropping a set!
Gracedieu Loponda Yes indeed. However Evert, and Graf were my favourites, and similar in temperament to Emma. They were gracious, elegant and brilliant without the histrionics
This is something only Hollywood can dream of. But this is not a movie.
Emma gives hope to the little people.
May 2022 bring her more success and we’ll be watching her in all her matches to come.
Come on Emma !!!!🥰🥰🥰
Magical. Enchanted. Unbelievable. Amazing. Sublime tennis. An absolute fairytale. .
*_Any time I want to put a smile on my face I come back and watch this._*
I hope they do a piece on both Emma and Leylah. Two amazing stars, kind and generous people. Leylah's speech and tribute to NYC and 9/11 made me tear up. Congrats to Emma for winning, and to both of them for punching way above their class for two straight weeks. Much love!
leylah's speech was contrived
Apart from the girl who lost moaning and whinging when Emma R was bleeding.
@@macman975 exactly right. Almost as though she wanted Emma to just bleed all over the court. Quite distasteful
@@BOZ_11 Unfortunately I have to agree, Leylah herself said that her biggest takeaway from this tournament was that she plays better with the crowd on her side. It was quite transparent the way she tried to use the crowd to her advantage. Which is of course absolutely fine, but I don't think there was anything genuine about it.
@@BOZ_11 Contrived? Nah man, look up some of Leylah's other pressers from the tournament. She talked about the energy and resilience the crowd gives her the whole two weeks. Her runner-up speech was a summarizing conclusion to all that came before.
A fairytale indeed! Watching this, the enormity of Emma's unbelievable achievement just hits home! 😍
Yes! Towards the end she completely broke Fernandez physically and mentally! Look at the sheer power of Emma's shots! But if you see her physical training it is just scary!!
Her ability to change speed is incredible.
Her feet move faster than my brain can comprehend
Yes, that and the appropriate moment-to-moment sound decision making.
She wasn't necessary better or even more proficient than Fernandes, both teens being only 18 and 19, with endless energy & determination. But you could see she made more correct decisions, when she went for the ball.
In a few crucial points, for example, rather than (easily) hitting the ball into a wide open field (where Fernandes was rushing to get back to for coverage, after being pushed to the extreme corner by Emma), Emma returned the ball right back to the same spot (like a self-assured, highly experienced veteran would)... that meant no matter physically close by Fernades still was, her momentum had already taken her in the opposite direction, so she couldn't do any thing about that relatively easy ball returned by Emma.
Defensively, she's also daring enough to psy Fernandes out, so she could force the latter to return an easy ball to the direction for which she, Emma, was ready.
Look at the 10:30 minute mark: Emma returned a ball, just over the net, to Fernandes (that's because Fernandes initial ball was so fast, down the center, Emma barely had time to react to it... so getting it back was a miracle in itself.... but instead of telegraphing her intentions, she waited until the last nano-second. THAT psychology forced Fernandes to return that easy ball (swinging it at full force) to Emma's right; but that's the direction Emma was planning to cover, in reality... so fast as Fernandes ball was, Emma had enough initial momentum to get to it & returned the ball, straight down her right flank, onto Fernandes left (which is her dominant side); but that kind of quick-twitched return, there's nothing Fernandes could do about it. (A fast ball can be returned even faster, if you don't let the ball bounce too high.)
The other factor, Emma herself noted: she's not sure when she'd get a chance to play as THE center of attention again at Ash Stadium, so she took her chances and played aggressively, enjoying every ball she hit.
Aggressive offensively, lack of unforced errors, playing for the moment, correct decision making & quick witted.... those are the intangibles that allowed Emma to beat 10 people, much more experienced than she, without dropping a single set herself!
@@kiabtoomlauj6249 Excellent analysis!
@@kiabtoomlauj6249 Her table tennis grounding might have helped her to respond faster than her opponents' anticipation.
i think servis return from emma just wooow
Emma is from my hometown, Bromley in Kent. We are all so happy for her just waiting for her to parade the us open trophy aroung the town, we are only a small town on the outskirts of London but we do produce champions. Well done Emma we are all really proud of you here at br1
So gorgeous, so talented, so young,so intelligent , so sweet and humble.......
Shes got everything. Amazing
Goosebumps. What a story and inspiration. Just amazing.
I'm 35 and as I was watching this I just kept thinking: "Man, you are going to play tournaments again.Period."
No limits.
Believe.
Something about her look at 7:58 that you just know that she is going to win. Inspirational play, Emma. Congratulations!!
Yeah like "cold blooded killer"
a real fairytale, beautiful to watch and so inspiring
Did anyone else notice how biased the crowd was against Emma and for the Canadian well done Emma you did us proud.
If she was American, they would be all over like a rash, jealous me thinks
both canadian
@@1golfchap Raducanu = British mate 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧hope that clears that up
@@1golfchap Tell by thick British accent, and people saying from Great Britain, there’s a clue there what nationality she is 😂🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍👍👍
@@iankirkpatrick1037 She's actually a duel citizen I believe, Canadian and British.
Fairy tales are rare but it never happens that there is a fairy tale with a real fairy. Emma is a gem of a person, full of innocence, ethics , manners and all genuine. Her creator wanted to bless her for who she is. And there is no better way to bless then make her create history. What she has done is no record, because all records can be broken. She created a history which no one has witnessed before and no one ever will. May she always remain blessed
Her smile is the best ❤️
This is the most amazing achievement in Tennis history, let alone the US Open!!! Here's hoping fame doesn't spoil things for her... (somehow I don't think it will as she has the IQ of the last 10 winners put together☺) Emma Raducanu u beautiful legend...🦾🏆😎
Wouldn't say the most amazing, but still a legendary event we will never see again
@@lucasng7399 that is your opinion........ how many times has a HUMAN achieved this in TENNIS? NEVER!!!! That is my opinion! History Maker fella!
@@freddysquirenaranjo4859 chill bro just said it wasnt the greatest tennis feat of ALL TIME. definitely in the last decade though
@@lucasng7399 So, when was the last time a qualifier won a major?
Just asking...
Actually, I just Googled it and the answer is NEVER - just saying...
@@richardpierpoint3006 That doesn't make it the most amazing thing though does it. I would say Federer consistently winning again and again despite his age is FAR more impressive.
What a Great Story for British Tennis 🎾
I don't know which is most impressive. Winning the us open at 18, being unseeded, or not dropping a single set.
And first qualifier to win a grand slam
@@lordloki86 Yes, how would you choose. All of those things together are even greater!
All of the above put together along with being a qualifier too, just astounding, any British talent I'll always follow and see how they get on, been watching Emma since before Wimbledon so had an inkling she was gonna be a top player even then, watched her at Nottingham and thought wow this could be the very thing we all needed, knew she would be up there but never thought I'd see her claim the us open title and how she did it too, I'm still in shock even now a whole week later, I love tennis and I just been beaming all this past week, long may it continue
Or having that Angelic smile.
One of the best champs of all time! Why? Well spoken and humble!! I look forward to seeing her in more finals :) p.s that Leylah deserves a title as well
I get the distinct impression it won't be too long before Leylah breaks her duck in a slam, she was also phenomenal in this tournament and she's only a couple of months older than Emma. They're both going to be seeded now all next year because most of their ranking will come from this comp, we're going to be seeing a lot of them next year. Emma may soon be in the top 8.
Successful and humble, a rare combination nowadays
@@darthwiizius Absolutely - I reckon these two, frankly brilliant, young women are going to be the new Chris Lloyd and Martina Navratilova...
I've got one. How about "Leylah The Vainglorious"?
Thank you 💚
There will be a Netflix or Amazon biopic someday of her journey to stardom. They will find it difficult to cast as beautiful an actress though.
Leyla was also at this event, suitably in her very simple and sweet style. Even in her loss, she’s a big star now. What a wonderful personality! Both these girls are great. They’ve emerged at the same moment. They’re different from each other, but somehow compliment each other. Emma is unbelievably poised and striking in an interview.
Loves her confidence, agility and brilliance in her performance. Congratulations Emma. You are a star.
Yes! Towards the end she completely broke Fernandez physically and mentally! Look at the sheer power of Emma's shots! But if you see her physical training it is just scary!!
she is a little gem
Ah what a talent! She is an inspiration to others - even her name on social media can be shortened to "u can". She is is a lesson to us all to follow your dreams - young and old.
Yes! Emma completely breaks down her opponents - physically, mentally, emotionally! Look at the sheer strength of Emma's arms and shots! But if you see her physical training it is just scary!!
Us Brits are so proud of you Emma !
Wimbledon 2022 is going to be something else !!
We put so much pressure on our tennis players at Wimbledon I really hope she gives it a miss.
She has unfinished business, and thrives on home support, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with..
Really? Are they changing it then?
I think its amazing how she is a normal build. Not extremely tall, strong, fast etc just a normal physique proving that skill > genes amazing
She's 175 quite tall for a girl
About average height in the WTA.
She’s 5’9”!
no steroid muscles
@@rockinro698 5.9 is tall
One of the greatest sporting achievements. I am still stunned. Such steel and composure on the court, grace and beauty off the court.
I never gave her a chance at all, those smiles won me over, I am a fan... Emma and Leylah made history
There was no one watching her early qualie matches (other than her team) and by the end everyone wanted to watch her.
There was no public admission to the qualifiers.
She has amazing positivity in her that is attracting people...Cute, Intelligent, Full of energy, brilliant player...
Once in awhile someone like Emma came along and stopped the world. 🥺
She is born to play tennis, she is making those shots looks so simple, she will reach great heights.. Best of luck Emma
Incredible energy from an incredible player, can't wait to see more from her in the future!
Her beauty radiates from within , truly a shining star !!!
She is like a woman Federer! So charismatic, talented, and charming! This girl will shine for a long time! She has massive global appeal and is so marketable!
