Finally some Mandolin Orange. I share the same sentiment as the guy who recommended on being appreciative of the genuine passion from Michael. Fun to watch him break these great songs down. I personally dont think Mandolin Orange have a bad song and some of the more interesting arrangements for me are “Paper Mountain”, “When She’s Feeling Blue”, & “Blue Ruin” if anyone is looking for more recommendations.
I don't like a lot of this "reacting to" trend that many UA-camrs do these days because most of them just watch or listen and make weird faces and then the video is over, but you take the time to make out their choices in songwriting and appreciate the music for what it is. Your analyses are always spot on, but I love that you understand when you run across some truly beautiful and remarkable music and sit back and enjoy it. Anyways, keep doing what you're doing, brother.
TOTALLY agree! I'm not a musician by any means, I don't play any instrument and I think the reaction videos are just...who cares. But this guy...LOVE his videos. Don't know what it is about his videos that draw me in more than any other...maybe because he really is a musician himself, maybe his reaction feels real and genuine...first video I watched of his was reaction to Tyler Childers "Nose to on the Grindstone" and he looked like he was crying! From that point I was like " this dude understands, he gets it" beautiful, story telling music.
I don't play an instrument, but dude I watch your videos all the way through. You shine the intricacies in music that I can hear but don't understand. You give me a greater appreciation for all music and for that, I thank you!
Another NC resident here who shares the same sentiment as the person who requested this. I heard this song for the first time back in ‘17. Loved it. Listened to the whole album many times. I then decided to cover this tune in a set I played in Shelby, NC. Actually playing it live I got choked up and almost cried. Weird experience but I felt like it was a long overdue apology for the way I used to behave and things I used to say. To the person who requested this, “of the times” is hitting the nail right on the head.
The poetry of this song is amazing. In very, very few words it portrays the Confederate experience in a "from the inside" sort of way in the first verse. Then the second verse sets the listener up for a surprise-- "too much money rolled in to ever end slavery". The third verse's "pride has a way..." speaks to us all about our Lost Cause legacy and points to its fallacy. The fourth verse allows for the retention of being a son of the South without having to be a supporter of secession/racism---- all that, and "the day old Warren died hate shoulda gone with him" gives us an opportunity to be rid of all that mess. Such a beautiful song. And so, SO smartly crafted.
I’ve always loved Mandolin Orange’s way of touching on sensitive subjects like these. They’ve got a song called “Hey Adam” from their first album that touches on another subject that’s very pertinent these day that I think you’d really enjoy
I almost shat myself when I got the notification that you had done this song. Can I say that on youtube? Sweet. Thanks for another great video Michael. We do appreciate you
Its just so great to find someone else that has the same emotion about music as i do... its always so sad when i show my friends great music like this and they just say "country music isn't cool" but man. The talent ... its just great to sit and watch someone else get as excited as i do about this type of music.
This has been one of my favorite performances for years! I really didn't understand what it is musically, I just knew it was awesome. The harmonies and the subject matter I think is what really turned me on. Thank you for your perspective and trained ear.......AWESOME STUFF!
Their live performance from Lincoln Theatre is absolutely amazing! I couldn't even start to guess the number of times I've listened to it. I was blown away a few weeks ago when a strictly audio form was released.
This song was my first exposure to Mandolin Orange (Now Watchhouse). It damn near makes me cry every time I hear it. Boy, you couldn't be more right about the ultra-slick electric guitar playing.
I can't believe you listened to this man! Been watching you for a month +. I had caught on to Mandolin a couple of years ago. This is a great version of this song. Crazy when "worlds" cross.
Yes bro YES!!!!! This is such a bad ass song I'm so glad someone put them on your radar. They are great I have every album they've made. Dude on mandolin kiiiillllsss
Josh Oliver is the guy on guitar, and he is an excellent all around guitar player. He has some solo work out that is great as well. Andrew Marlin also has an instrumental album called Buried in a Cape with some really interesting arrangements.
I stumbled upon Mandolin Orange on Spotify several months back and could not believe how good they sounded. Not only are they amazing lyricists, but they are phenomenal musicians! The harmonies are second to none.
You absolutely said "absolutely" two times! I'm absolutely going to beat that with atleast one! Where did you see them? At a festival? Greetings from Sweden!
Ghandi 2 no at the Oosterpoort in Groningen (NL). It’s a pretty small theatre but such a pretty place. Love Sweden by the way. Great place to spend your holiday (when there’s no covid).
Wonderful reaction once again! Thats such a beautifully written song. I love that they use the imagery of wildfire to tie together moments of history. (Joseph Warren is an actual person by the way). Keep up the solid work Michael, thanks for all you do to continue to inspire your audience! Much love. -Bluebird
Good grief, i never thought you'd analyse Mandolin Orange. Fantastic breakdown of a band that deserves a hell of a lot more listeners. As soon as i've finished my current courses i'm popping over to guitar gate, nice one, Michael.
I’ve been listening to these guys for years, and have seen them play live several times. They’re just as good live as you think. Really cool to see them getting some attention here.
When Mandolin Orange is on point they give me the willies from my ears to my knees. I just love it. Getting a physical reaction from an arrangement of vibrations... nothing better.
I’ve listened to all of their albums countless times. They are simply the best. It’s incredible and sad they aren’t the most notable roots music in the country.
I love Mandolin Orange. Boots of Spanish leather is one of my favorites, but Wildfire is also at the top of the list. I’m so excited to watch you dissect their music🤗.
Michael you're the man. So awesome watching you expand your music horizon. And the way you break it down while also getting goosebumps on songs you may have never found.... Love it.
Wow. Just wow. Amazing sound. Thanks so much for sharing and a big thank you for doing what you do. I look forward to each and every video you take the time to post
I've seen a number of artists from different generes in person in concert. In the top 3 I've ever seen: Mandolin Orange at the Ryman Auditorium. I was blown away. Incredible experience.

Love Mandolin Orange. You should check out The Steeldrivers - Long Way Down (Or any other song, really). Chris Stapleton used to be the singer, but they've now had 3 different singers, each incredibly talented.
I discovered Mandolin Orange at the end of 2018, and they became my favorite group pretty quickly, I saw this song performed live in Boston and it felt like there was electricity going through my body I have never felt something like that before, they are a force of nature, I would have seen then more times already but Covid has made it hard.
I love mandolin orange man I wish I could have seen them live last year here in Arkansas but they sell out SO FAST. Give a listen to Nick Shoulders if you get the chance, he's a little weird and he's got some serious earworms like Rather Low. Love from Arkansas 💕

Incredibly refreshing to see critiques that CELEBRATE music! Love it. Can't believe you didn't comment on this guy's tremolo picking though. It has the perfect amount of swing.
This series is awesome for: discovering new music, developing an ear for more intentional (theory-based) listening, seeing how one can break things down, and just straight up sharing in the awe and appreciation of the artist(s) with you. A+++ viewing experience. I never really comment on videos but I recently came across your channel and was so pleasantly surprised. I thought from the title that this series would be a cheap and easy content farm but I really really love how you take the time to break things down. Rewinding the video to focus on certain parts with you is just great and adds so much for us wannabe musicians. Thank you, Michael!
@@Guitargate Hey buddy, I think what you're doing is great! I had another comment on this video that I dont know if you saw, but you should REALLY REALLY watch Mandolin Orange doing Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan...not even to do a video on...just for your own pleasure. It made me cry multiple times. Usually a song might make me tear up the first listen, but this one did many different times of listening to it. Its actually the first song I saw the band do and its AMAZING!!!!!!
The guitar player is Josh Oliver. I wish he had a bigger following!! He also does some solo acoustic stuff, and has a killer voice! You should check him out! The mandolin orange shows I've seen he opens for them and then will play a few songs with them on their set .
I just came across them a couple weeks ago. I've played them throughout the house while we clean, paint, play, etc... Love their sound, lyrics and all around vibe. Our 6 year old loves it and that says something. He just likes good music
Your review gave me chill bumps!! Lol Love it when you get excited. I too love this group. Been a fan for a couple of bv years now and they are just get tighter.
I’ve seen Mandolin Orange four times live. They’re one of the best live performance bands around. So good. Guitar player is Josh Oliver. He has some solo stuff out as well as some good duets with Jills Andrews (AMAZING VOICE).
I thought I might've been getting my 5 seconds of fame for recommending this band/song, but no surprise that many others have recommended this BEAUTIFUL band to you! This was exactly what I'd hoped for. Thank you for pumping out amazing content, Michael!
That guys name. Dr. Joseph Warren killed at Battle of Bunker Hill. Was at Lexington & Concord "The Shot heard round the World". The song takes us from our f through Civil war and reconstruction. Prettu brilliant writing
Another great NC group to check out would be Mipso. Both them and Mandolin Orange are from the Chapel Hill area (go Heels!) Three of the four members trade off on vocals across songs, solid bluegrass tunes all around. "People Change" is a personal favorite - raw, emotional, beautiful. "Louise" or "When I'm Gone" for their classic sound, "Your Body" for a peek at their upcoming album.
Couldn't agree with you more. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the greatness of this band and song. I've had this song on repeat since I heard it last week. Instant classic in my book. And thanks for the chord breakdown.
Their cover of Bob Dylan's Boots of Spanish Leather is perfect! Absolutly perfect!
Agree
One of my favorites!
They make good music
Yes for sure
Absolutely. That's the song that grabbed me first.

Thanks jay!!
I’d add Waltz About Whiskey to that list!
They also have a cover of Amsterdam by Gregory Alan Isakov and it's pure heaven.
I’ll add “Wake Me”, “Hey Stranger”, “Darling Girl” and “Old Ties and Companions”
Blue Ruin definitely has some interesting stuff going on in it.
Never thought I'd see Mandolin Orange on this page. The Paste performance is my favorite version of the song. Absolutely pertinent to these days.
Boom!!
Amen. Discovered it just today.
They're amazing musicians and Andrew Marlin's voice flows like warm honey is something that shouldn't be overlooked either. It's SO good.

Dude. Totally.
First off the lyrics are so pertinent. Second, my man’s voice is like silk dipped in butter and drizzled with honey. This band rips.
You have to check out Gregory Alan Isakov - The Stable Song - Cardinal Sessions. It's right up your alley
Dude yes. Favorite song ever.
I gotta agree to this. GAI is one of the best!
Love me some Isakov, particularly that album; had some weird mystical experiences with the song 3am. Stable Song is great in it’s subtleties.
Amazing song!
Yes! Or “If I go” ugh one of the best songs ever.
You should do the Milk Carton Kids michigan. Great song really interesting guitar playing thanks for all the videos man!!!

There's a version of this where they are joined by Chris Thiele, Sarah Jaroz and others, it's stunning.
You have to check out 'The Milk Carton Kids'. Harmonies and guitar playing will blow you away.
I've told him the same on other videos. Hopefully he picks up on it.

My new all time favorite band. First time I heard, One More Down, I went out and bought a mandolin to learn the intro.
They have another terrific song that is just as powerful with a similar message. Give their song “The Wolves” a listen.
