I think I went up there a week after you guys. When I reached the top where you could first see it, lava had flowed maybe 100ft from the trail and it was like a week or so after I had been there that the hill you could sit on and watch it got cut off by lava. It’ll be years and years before it’s safe to go back on that hill! Crazy!!!!
Great video! I just read that the last 500 meters of trail A is now closed because of the encroaching lava. Hopefully a new path will be forged soon as it appears that’s where you had your best views!

Great video! I am traveling from the US to Iceland in July. I'm a little nervous about the process of getting back into the United States. I read that you have to have a negative COVID test and that you have to print it out as proof. I'm not sure how that works. Do you think you could make a video explaining the process of returning home? Thank you!! :))
Getting back to US has been pretty easy, just a rapid test within three days, and it can be digital. We didn't have to print it. Always double check of course though
Like Lost Among Locals said, It is pretty easy, however haha we did have some issues with the results but I think that was just a one off situation. We did make a video about that process. It will be coming out in a few more weeks
Hihi I'm from Iceland. You will take a test at the airport when you arrive Iceland + vaccine. You have to take PCR before you go to US. Everything just in your phone. We are using all tecknic.
Thank you for posting this I just bought my plane ticket. I’m a beginner photographer- wondering what length lense you used to get those shots from the top of the hill?
Where you are going to get a Covid test before coming back to the US? Is it free? What app are they using for the results? We are flying at the end of July.
We will be making a video about that too, it will be out in a few more weeks. We tested at the testing site on Suðurlandsbraut in Reykjavik. It was $55 USD per person and we received an email with the results
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thank you. Also, I remember you mentioned that a shuttle was not there at the airport to get you to the rental car place. I know that they running every 15 min... what happened?
Well done, and very helpful! We're hoping to hike to the volcano in early July and follow your itinerary around the Ring Road, so add me to your list of subscribers!
Thanks for sharing this awesome trip with viewers! A quick question! When you guys return to the US, are you guys required to have a negative COVID-19 test result before getting on board a flight? Passengers who are fully vaccinated are exempted from that?
@@TheAwkwardTourists Gotcha! Any idea where you guys will get tested for COVID-19 in Iceland before returning to the US? I wonder if there is a place in Reykjavik or near the airport where returning passengers to the US can get tested to have a negative COVID-19 test result…

What an awesome video! Thank you for all the information! I am waiting in anticipation for each and every video that you post! So appreciated! One question, when I clicked on the link to see what type of drone you used it took me to Amazon but not to any particular product. I am researching Drones because we want to buy one before we go. Can you help me figure what Drone you used?
Thank you! I am pretty techy the bf not so much. Do you talk about the converter/ adapter products you used in any of your videos? I am researching that also. Thank you again for your help and allowing us to see Iceland through your eyes!
Did you need to take a COVID test prior to returning back to the United States? If so, how much was it and was it in Reykjavik? I'm heading there in 2 weeks
Yes, at the time we returned home we did need a test. But thinks may change before now and the time we lost that video, so I would always recommend checking right before travel. We paid 7000 ISK for a test in Reykjavik, and we'll cover that in our 'leaving Iceland' video
In November you might encounter snow, so something that is waterproof and above the ankle for sure. Kelly is working on a blog post of all the gear that we used on our trip. Stay tuned!
I would call it moderate. It was about an hour to get to the site, and half of it was flat, the other half was pretty steep. But keep in mind, this was filmed in May 2021, and the volcano has been erupting since then, so the lava field is much much bigger now and the trail has changed course since the path we took in now under a lava flow
The lava flow has completely changed over the last year, so it looks a lot different now, But I think you can still access some parts. I wouldn't worry about a fear of heights as long as you are ok hiking up some big hills you should be fine
This was a great and informative video, thanks so much. I'm going in August and am really concerned about the need to pee during a 6-8 hour trip. Do you have any recommendations?
Layers are key! The Weather can change at any moment so having extra layers is a really great way to be prepared. Also, be sure to pack some rain/ wind gear
Thanks so much for this video! Planning on making the hike up soon - how long did the hike take you ultimately round trip? And how much time do you recommend spending up there?
I could tell you all this but the hike and terrain are completely different now as lava has closed off the trails that we took and the views are totally different! I have no idea what it's like up there now, although I expect different paths have been made. We were up there for 8 hours!
Just one more question guys~ how do you guys stay connected with friends and families in the US during your trip in Iceland? Did you have to buy a SIM card with a local phone service provider upon arrival at the airport? Or did you activate a global roaming service once arrived in Iceland? Thank you for the information in advance…
We used our global data plan for a few days but we also had a 4g wifi hub that we got with our camper rental. I'm sure you can buy a SIM card pretty easily
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you for the info! I just found out the huge duty free shop where you guys bought some alcohol beverages also sell some SIM cards as well. I will try to buy there when I arrive at the airport in Iceland. Thanks and have a safe travel!
Hey do we need to register certain time for pcr test before returning to US?? Or can we just select a date and go for screening at any time of that day??
Loving your Iceland travel series!! I just booked my tickets to Iceland and I've been literally taking notes of places and Covid processes by looking at your videos.. So informative and helpful!!! Is the volcano hike recommended with a 4 year old? The hike in the video didn't seem too long or anything.. Thanks for the information, you guys are amazing!!!
Thanks so much. We have more videos coming so stay tuned. We saw a lot of kids hiking, I don't know if we saw any kids that young though. Since we visited the volcano a lot has changed and the lava is coming out at a much faster rate now. The lava flow actually breached the steep part of the hike we took, so you can get a lot closer to the lava flow now, but not as close to the volcano. Be sure to check safetravels.is before your hike. They are really good at keeping up to date info on the hike and safety of the area.
Hi we are going to Iceland end of jul and are vaccinated Can you please let me know if you have to still get covid test from ny to Iceland and vice versa.
This is from travel.covid.is : Travellers who present a valid certificate of full vaccination or previous infection: Do not need to present a negative PCR-test upon arrival. Do not need to undergo a screening test for COVID-19 at the border and are exempt from quarantine. However, I believe you still need a negative covid test to return to the USA, even if you are vaccinated
Going to iceland at the end of July! Your videos have definitely been helpful and informative! Did you pay for a guided tour for the volcano hike or was it free to visit?
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you so much! The car I rented said it won't be able to drive on the F roads. Do you think it would still be accessible for us to drive to the beginning of the hiking trail?
Pretty bad to be honest. There was also a lot of air traffic and weak GPS signal, so definitely not the best conditions, but I had to do it. When do you get an opportunity like that? I figured even if the drone never came back it would be worth it.
Yes, Mainly with the wind. landing was especially difficult as it kept getting blown around, not so many problems from the heat, but I made sure that I didn't get too close and didn't hover in one spot too long

Great video
Thanks!
Thank you for posting this I just bought my plane ticket. I’m a beginner photographer- wondering what length lense you used to get those shots from the top of the hill?
The close up shots were done with a 100-400mm lens
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you!!!
@@hughferguson9142 covid happened lol
Was there a fee to see the volcano? I'm going in June and want to see it also.
The volcano is no longer erupting, I'm afraid
Fantastic - so envious :) the volcano is beautiful
Well done, and very helpful! We're hoping to hike to the volcano in early July and follow your itinerary around the Ring Road, so add me to your list of subscribers!
Awesome! We have about a half dozen videos coming up from our journey around the ring road. Stay tuned!
Thanks for sharing this awesome trip with viewers! A quick question! When you guys return to the US, are you guys required to have a negative COVID-19 test result before getting on board a flight? Passengers who are fully vaccinated are exempted from that?
At this time, you need a negative Covid test to enter the US
@@TheAwkwardTourists Gotcha! Any idea where you guys will get tested for COVID-19 in Iceland before returning to the US? I wonder if there is a place in Reykjavik or near the airport where returning passengers to the US can get tested to have a negative COVID-19 test result…
@@byoungkeolchoi2840 we got tested in Reykjavik. You can make an appointment at travel.covid.is There's a place in Keflavik too but I don't know how to make an appointment
Very nice!!
Thanks!
what is the place called for the volcano?
The Fagradalsfjall volcano is on the Reykjanes peninsula. It is about 30km from Reykjavik
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thanks for your quick reply , much appreciated. I lost my driving license. Is there any bus service to go there? I am coming from UK tomorrow to Reykjavik
@@TheAwkwardTourists I took golden circle tour and asked them for discount by phone, lady gave me 10 % discount code, thanks for that, it costed 7190 isk, took another tour for northern light and saw northern light very beautiful
We actually bought a new drone in Iceland (more on that in our next video) DJI Air2s is the one we just purchased and it's awesome
Thank you! I am pretty techy the bf not so much. Do you talk about the converter/ adapter products you used in any of your videos? I am researching that also. Thank you again for your help and allowing us to see Iceland through your eyes!
I plan on doing this tour. Is this volcano quite active? Is there a good chance that I'll be able to see the lava there?
It just became active again after almost a year being dormant. Now is a great time to visit!
@@TheAwkwardTourists I plan on seeing it September 11th, this year. Hopefully I'll see some volcanic action.
Ha! You are brilliant to bring marshmallows. Awesome video and informative. What kind of cameras do you use? Great footage!
We shoot with a canon 6dmii, dji mavic pro drone (for this video) gopro hero9 black, and canon g7xmii
Amaiziiiiing, well done, great channel
Did you need to take a COVID test prior to returning back to the United States? If so, how much was it and was it in Reykjavik? I'm heading there in 2 weeks
Yes, at the time we returned home we did need a test. But thinks may change before now and the time we lost that video, so I would always recommend checking right before travel. We paid 7000 ISK for a test in Reykjavik, and we'll cover that in our 'leaving Iceland' video
I’m going to Iceland in November and was wondering what hiking shoes you would reccomend?
In November you might encounter snow, so something that is waterproof and above the ankle for sure. Kelly is working on a blog post of all the gear that we used on our trip. Stay tuned!
Hi!! How long did it take to hike up & down? 😍
What is the difficulty of this hike
I would call it moderate. It was about an hour to get to the site, and half of it was flat, the other half was pretty steep. But keep in mind, this was filmed in May 2021, and the volcano has been erupting since then, so the lava field is much much bigger now and the trail has changed course since the path we took in now under a lava flow
would this trip be okay for someone with a fear of heights. mostly the hike to the volcano is what i am worried about.
There was a port o potty at the beginning of the trail head, but unfortunately that was the only toilet option when we were there
@@TheAwkwardTourists thanks for the info. Enjoy your travels.
Hi! Do you have clothing recommendations/links to dress appropriately for the weather in Iceland?
Layers are key! The Weather can change at any moment so having extra layers is a really great way to be prepared. Also, be sure to pack some rain/ wind gear
Wow I’m speechless I want to witness the volcano in person
It was insane. So much power and we were able to get suprisingly close
@@TheAwkwardTourists I’m flying out to Iceland 🇮🇸 next Saturday and I’m flying from California, I’ll be in Europe for 2 months I’m so excited
Did you need to schedule a tour or you can just go whenever to the volcano? Also is there a fee to access it?
No fee, no tour... Just nature's show
Great thanks I will be going next week, so this is pretty helpful! Are there any other volcanoes you recommend?
Thanks so much for this video! Planning on making the hike up soon - how long did the hike take you ultimately round trip? And how much time do you recommend spending up there?
I could tell you all this but the hike and terrain are completely different now as lava has closed off the trails that we took and the views are totally different! I have no idea what it's like up there now, although I expect different paths have been made. We were up there for 8 hours!
We need to visit Iceland
There is so much to see in that country. Beautiful place
thank you for making this video!
When we went, we had to make an appointment for a certain time
@@TheAwkwardTourists Got it so we can do the test atleast 72 to 48 hours before rite??
Can we go there with a taxi ? If I can’t drive what are my others options please ?
The Volcano isn't erupting anymore, but if you want to see the lava flow, you can take a bus
@@TheAwkwardTourists Thanks a lot!! Just saw your video on west ring road and I continue to take notes!!!
Hello, I would like to know the address of the starting point of the trail on Google Maps pls.
Unfortunately, this whole area has changed now due to lava flows, I don't think any of the places we went are accessible anymore
Do you need to pay to get in or it’s free? We are going in 20 days! Wondering if we need to arrange a tour or just explore on our own
We did not take a tour. We hiked it on our own and it was free
Hi we are going to Iceland end of jul and are vaccinated Can you please let me know if you have to still get covid test from ny to Iceland and vice versa.
This is from travel.covid.is :
Travellers who present a valid certificate of full vaccination or previous infection:
Do not need to present a negative PCR-test upon arrival.
It was free and easy, there were like a million other people to follow haha
@@TheAwkwardTourists thank you so much! The car I rented said it won't be able to drive on the F roads. Do you think it would still be accessible for us to drive to the beginning of the hiking trail?
How was the wind when u flew the drone???
Pretty bad to be honest. There was also a lot of air traffic and weak GPS signal, so definitely not the best conditions, but I had to do it. When do you get an opportunity like that? I figured even if the drone never came back it would be worth it.
@@TheAwkwardTourists hahahah glad ur drone came back
👍🏻
did you have any issues with your drone and high winds? heat?
Yes, Mainly with the wind. landing was especially difficult as it kept getting blown around, not so many problems from the heat, but I made sure that I didn't get too close and didn't hover in one spot too long
Susbribed ✅ I enjoyed this video so much! Thank you
Thanks for the support!
Where can I read the latest conditions?
Check the website www.safetravel.is I believe they update it twice a day
What trail did you guys use to go up?
I think we took the A route, but since we have been there, the lava flow took out one of the paths, so I'm not sure what it looks like now
Haha nice video but... are zombies humans?
Haha, Glad you caught that
