when the Royal Navy has so few vessels ... it seems weird to be sending them to the Pacific !

we have a decent number and the ship was a OPV designed to be deployed overseas

The batch 2 Rivers are de facto virtually unarmed small combat units that were actually BUILT to incorporate all the necessary structural and survivability enhancing systems features OF real combat units. They're thus also just about the world's most over-priced OPVs and it's time the RN pressured our vile Westminster/Whitehall elite mediocrities into accepting the significantly improved weapons fit and addnl sensors that would help to re-grow the number of effective tier1 and 2 RN WARSHIPS.

Not every ship in the fleet has too be a high end warship. Tasks are varied and so should be the fleet.

@@Belisarius1967 Yep, though the no1 priority should always be an adequate fleet of actually fully armed warships fully able to engage peer level equivalents if needed. Accordingly, almost completely unarmed 2,000 tonne vessels built as full-combat-units, but that're configured only as OPVs at (in today's money), over £150m a pop, aren't a good use of limited resources.
So ARM THEM PROPERLY then they'd be suitable for deployment in the less than safe areas of the world that they're already being sent to anyway, precisely because of lack of more top-end units..
