Another happy landing) Love your minimalistic "low tech" crafts, both in looks a and performance. Just a tip - Trajectories can account for lift, not just drag, you just need to configure "Descent profile" in options. Right click its icon, and you can tell it that your craft is a spaceplane - facing prograde, instead of default retrograde for capsules. There is even an option for your favorite 15 degrees offset from prograde (or 2, 5, 10, whichever works best for any plane).
Minmus round trip takes two weeks with Mike Aben’s fancy retrograde maneuver pass that counts as an orbit for the purposes of Kerbal experience and tourist trips. The smart money is to send a station with fuel for the first “orbit Minmus mission” then Send a lander “ for the “ land on minmus “ mission. that way you could multiple landings before you go home, but the game always seem to want you to return the lander to kerbin in a separate mission that doesn’t pop until after you’ve landed. You could still send the station and use it for subsequent missions if you’re a completionist or whatever, but KSP career mode is a little frustrating.
Oh! I don't think I caught that before. What you're talking about with Trajectories: The reason it gives the "wrong" position for landing with aircraft is that it calculated reentry assuming you don't change the orientation of the vessel at all, and specifically on an absolute reference frame, not Kerbin's reference frame.
Great to witness another Ksp video from VAOS. I believe all of us missed seeing your craft designs, from low tech, cute to larger and more involved designs I still highly enjoy them. One intriguing idea that you could look into is when unlocking docking you could try to use some saved up kerb bucks to create a mini space station with escape pods around the moon. You could use that to rescue kerbals around the moon both with valid in game lore and realism. I would love to see that in plan. And you could use that as practice when building larger vessels to visit minimus with kerbals. Just as an idea. With your progress within the tech tree and building cool as low tier SSRT it will be also really cool to a variety for example expanding in the multi stage vehicles. Lore wise you can have special uses for them like heavy lift capabilities and such. On this note I highly rate your channel, and your videos, I do hope my ideas will be helpful as inspiration. Space cult forever.
Great SSRTO! I love that you started out on the RW with the jets and ended the flight with them too. I've always underestimated the little Juno engines. Long time fan bro! Love the channel! I can't wait to see what you come up with to send the Kerbal to Minmus in. Can you send "Sgt Charlie" as one of them? That'd be great! Keep it up and don't work too hard! I used to be OTR and was a dirt hauler after that, so I feel your pain. Side, End, Live and Asphalt... Not to mention Concrete... If it's got wheels, I've probably driven it. (Does an M1-A Abrams count? I've driven one of them too! LOL)
USI Life support accounts for "living spaces", the more parts you have with free crew capacity the longer the kerbal can stay in space, It also has consumption of resources but kerbals dont actually die if they run out, the just turn into tourists. That being said basically all of it is configurable so if you just want the living space and turn of everything else, you absolutely can!
My hunch is that wings help to compensate for the gravity "drag", the engines don't have to do that job since the airframe does it while the engines are busy gaining hozizontal speed instead of having to cope with vertical speed also.
784th viewer, oh yeah! (That's what I get for having a busy day.) I was afraid your "right here on Kerbin" mission was going to be one of those "high G adventures". Now THOSE are a trick! Loathe them. I concur with your rocket spaceplane efficiency assumptions. But I'm too lazy to build them. 7:35 Yeah, I had one of those too. /sigh ...Wait, competition, you say? Do I hear a Macey Dean Hanland Corporation rivalry incoming?!?!? Minmus. Dew it. Maaaaaaan, whatchu talkin' bout, Vaos? Spending a month in a capsule smaller than a coat closet is totally withstandable for rational minds. 12:12 OK, I take it back what I said to you on my stream. Those clouds look better than what you've used in the past. Now I do want that cloud mod. >.< Also, how have you survived this long without docking? Rendezvous and docking is like the bread and butter of what KSP space action is about for me. /shrug
im binging your Career mode Vods now and started my own career mode - and also swapped to Moderate-difficulty! Thanks to your designs I was finally able to build my first SSTO that reliably makes it to Orbit and back in one piece! A huge breakthrough. Now lets see if I can reach the Mun :)
In my career, I play in hard mode. I did this same mission with an ssto space plane, but I put the tourist into the cockpit instead of the pilot. So when I was gliding down to the runway, i suddenly lost control of my plane when the probe core ran out of battery and crashed, killing my pilot, three tourists, and the kerbal I rescued.
In my career game I have a vehicle that can carry 2 kerbals to Minmus with a lot of habitable space. They launch on a MK2 Command pod and once in their way to Minmus they detach and dock with a Hitchhicker Storage Container (Apollo LEM style)
If you think Kerbalism is a bit too micromanagy, there's a SIMPLEX Kerbalism which reduces all of the gases and stuff to "air" and "bad air" and simplifies the food and water to "consumables". It's a pretty nice setup and it has the insanity factor, it calculates the space and the amenities (like comms, gravity ring, cupolas, and etc) and returns a comfort level and max time before going insane. It's pretty fun.
At 6:15 you talked about how in KSP SSTOs are better because you only pay ₭9000-7000 in fuel. This instantly set off my BS meter and I was thinking "I can make an 2-Stage orbiter for less than that!" So I did, I wanted things to be even so I had the requirements of 5 seats, solar panels and batteries for SAS. I ended up at ₭10,085 which is more than I thought but I wanted to launch and see what I recover. (Maybe I can make it up with the parts I recover...) I recovered ₭2,800 so end up with a total mission cost of ₭7,285.00 (Ha, that is in the low range of your estimate, I bet you were exaggerating about the fuel anyway.) Well I had come this far and you didn't show the recovered cost in the video so I might as well go all the way and find the definitive answer. This led me to grab about 20 different snapshots out of your building section of this video and try and replicate this craft to see how it flies. I left out some of the blinky lights and likely missed something else because my total cost was ₭29,956.00 (a little less than yours) but my weight was higher and the total fuel and oxidizer were the same. (Good enough). Take off and ascent were a breeze I thought it would be like flying a brick but it was actually quite smooth and very controllable. I followed your flight plan, grabbed a stranded Scientist and performed a nice easy reentry and was able to land a craft that had been in space back at the KSC (I had never done this before so it took a few tries but soooooo satisfying once I did it) Moment of truth: I hit the recover button and was astound to get ₭26,789 back meaning that you were exaggerating about the fuel cost. But exaggerating in the other direction. The total mission cost was only ₭3,167.00!!! So with that I was utterly defeated. You flipped a KSP SSTO skeptic into a believer (For the record SSTOs are still bad for real world space travel). In KSP I will be using my "VAOS Trident" for many future missions. I had a ton of fun doing this so thank you for posting. It was my inspiration to try something I would have never otherwise done. Keep up the great work!
@@MadPirateShin I didn’t time them but with a steep accent angle that the rocket based SSRTs or SSTOs use it really is not much more than a couple of minutes slower. It was enough to impact a direct launch to orbital sync with an existing station but not much more than that.
"Oh the kerbanity!" 🤣😂😆 I'm guessing your numbers are up simply because Starfield is the new hotness, but also because you play it differently than anyone else.
I also found horizontal SSTOs to be more fuel efficient. I use vertical SSTOs because they are more time efficient. Perhaps you could design a space-plane specifically for use during time warp?

Kerbalism has an "insanity" meter for all the kerbals, if the kerbals get too insane they might break a part or 2
