Inventing Golden Baked Beans (on Toast, Because of Course)

- After a faltering start, my greenhouse is now producing mountains of tomatoes, including some delicious golden-yellow ones. So let's invent golden baked beans!
The yellow tomato varieties used here are: Golden Sunrise (the round ones) and Peardrops (the small oval ones).

I feel like if being British was a competitive sport, you would win the coveted golden baked beans.
Wouldnt he though 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I dunno, he lacks the inherent racism and blinkered point of view that makes a true Brit 😂😂.
@@AcornElectron I take it you are referring to our 'golden' athletes like Linford Christie and Denise Lewis?
Love your videos sooo much😊
Now now, we haven't asked him his opinion on the French.@@AcornElectron
Now all you'd need is a golden egg and you could make the most magical English breakfast
When he had the sauce in the blender I thought it looked like raw egg.
Indeed. Fit for a Hogwarts feast 😉
@@raraavis7782unrelated but you are very handsome
Golden egg easy hard boiled egg dishelled tossed in garlic oil with saffron
With golden sausages and bacon 😆
Honestly this man’s mind is amazing, so many crazy ideas that once he’s explained them see so natural and makes you wonder why you’ve never thought of it yourself.
I love the heavy reliance on color in this recipe. It’s so sunny-feeling and warm in more of a summery way than traditional baked beans.
You know you're from the UK when he starts grating cheddar on it, you said out loud "ooh yessss"
There's one channel I cannot ever miss and this is it. Something about your channel has made me less annoyed/bothered at things, especially when I fail in my life. You've given me the "oh well, how can I learn from this" skill, or maybe you've just increased the effectiveness of that said skill.
Thank you, I appreciate you far more than a random sub should, but after all, it doesn't matter what it is that makes you better/happier as long as it's not having any negative effect on others.
Im super happy your tomatoes have managed to make it, I really love when it's tomato season & they taste really sweet & aromatic so I could only imagine how amazing, fresh and all round yum these would be. Enjoy your harvest Mr Mike.
The biggest tragedy of this channel is we can see all these amazing foods, yet never taste them. This looks really good!
Was so relieved this wasn’t a short.
@@bakielh229because it’s the same format as tiktok and that’s the most popular thing in the world right now. Shorts aren’t going anywhere
@@bakielh229 I used the uBlock Origin browser addon to hide the "shorts" frame from my subscriptions. Now I don't see them any more.
There are Shorts blockers. I can highly recommend them. Never see a Short again.
@@nian60 I mainly use UA-cam on an iPad in the app. I have a shorts blocker on my PC w/Firefox though.
@bakielh229 greed, more people can see more videos. It's not the greed of the creator either, but on UA-cam. The creator gets literal pennies on millions of views for a short
Thank you Mr Shrimp. I also tent my toast to drive off steam, and everyone thinks it's bizarre. Always nice to find others with similar quirks!
Shrimp tenting his toast unlocked a childhood memory of travelling around Britain with my parents. At every B&B we stayed at, toast would be served in a toast rack without fail!
I would look forward to each stop on our travels to see if their toast racks were simple or elaborate in design.
I don't think I've ever had toast in a toast rack since but it was a fascinating, almost alien thing as a child.
Me too!
As a Mexican I can tell, you prepared the most delicious mollete I've ever seen. ❤
I was thinking this would be colored with saffron, but using yellow tomatoes is a really cool idea
Well I guess I was right lol
@@screempowas gonna say haha
@leviathanr53yeah!
SAFFRON!
@@rinoz47SAFFRON!!!!!!
Really enjoyed this idea and execution! There’s something really fascinating about letting color inform the ingredients, and hence flavor. Makes me curious about other colors of baked beans. Of course, some might have strange results, but it’d be a fun experiment (green baked beans??).
Just curious.... How'd you see this 12 days ago?
@@1dollarHatthe video must have been uploaded a few weeks ago and only just recently uploaded

Stripey beans would be fun!
@@CuteLittleMexicanMidget I recon you could go one stepfurther with that and use Turtle beans, Gothic baked beans!
Hello,
In Poland we have a dish we call Breton Beans, it's basically just baked beans with added small bits of either fried bacon or sausage and seasoned with a lot of marjoram(personally I like to fry the meat with some onion for even better flavour), I'd definitely recommend trying to cook your beans look this someday, it's a wonderful combination.
Love the red string callback
Looks delicious. Perhaps some mustard powder, and onion powder would be a good addition. Or even some diced sauteed yellow onions.
In spite of this not being a meal I could eat myself (beans are difficult for me), it's a delight watching your process! Your videos have made me a bit bolder about experimenting with cooking without a recipe.
You should try fried green tomatoes with any leftover green tomatoes! Personal favourite of mine
Good film as well !
My mother used to make jars of green tomato chutney, and we ate it with everything. My brother very optimistically turned up at my house with 3 or 4 green tomatoes one day hoping I would make it for him. He was very disappointed when I pointed out I'd need a lot more tomatoes, plus onions, spices, vinegar, dark brown sugar, and a few jars as well since I didn't have those to hand either!
This is great! Heinz will be knocking on your door shortly. I've got a couple of tins of Cannellini beans in the cupboard so may try and experiment with my miserable leftover tomatoes. Also, love the throw-back to the red-string mention!
Question is if .. Heinz did and they canned them would that be weird and would Shrimp do the thing?
I came here just to appreciate the red string call back. :)
Imagine the did this and added a ring pull 😱😱😱
SAFFRON!
Heinz aren't the best tinned beans, they just have the biggest marketing budget. Besides, their tins don't stack, that's an immediate boycott even if Aldi and Branston didn't beat them in taste tests.
A faltering start, or a startling fart, golden beans play the part.
What a fun idea! The beans look great. Me and my partner also made fresh baked beans with tomatoes and peppers recently. Very nice variety to the cans every once in a while :D
Tremendous success!! 🎉
btw, if you want to avoid toast sweat, warm the plate first, same as you'd warm your dinner plate 👍
this is the kind of tip I come to the internet for. thanks.
I'd never considered that! Thanks for the tip
I recently went old school. Toast rack. Cold toast, room temperature butter. Hot scrambled eggs or beans on top. Or cold marmalade. Hot buttered toast has its place, but never put it on a plate as it just sweats and ultimately always leads to disappointment.
I think the difference in taste could also be because you've used cannellini beans, baked beans are made with Haricot beans. Looks really good all the same!
Could be, but canellini and haricot beans are almost the same thing
I just noticed the plastic bag for the roasted pepper looks like a repurposed cornflakes cereal package. Ive seen my old man do this, along with keeping old envelopes to use for making shopping lists. I love it.
I find the cereal bags really useful - they are stiff enough to be washed easily and they stand up to drain dry
Brilliant idea, and the end product looked amazing.
I have a glut of black tomatoes , this has given me an inkling of a plan
As always a quality video, thanks
I love the addition of the SAFFRON. You know SAFFRON doesnt grow in every other country.
If nothing else, this is a recipe I'll be making one of these days. That sounds and looks absolutely delicious

SAFFRON I hear there's business opportunities in SAFFRON 😅
this inspired me to make a simple bean soup, and honestly, you cant go wrong with beans and shallots. i saved the video for when my soup was ready, and i had a great time watching, so thank you!
Love that the new Shrimp HQ garden is so bountiful, you and Jenny have so many options now for colorful, tasty meals right at your fingertips. Funny to think that this was considered "normal" in the "old days" and everyone had a little garden patch like this in their backyard. Back then people cooked at home instead of going out for takeaway every night, and neighborhoods would trade fruits and veggies with each other. Color in cooking is one of the things I enjoy greatly, it might not have any 'real" value in terms of flavor or nutrition, but it's just pleasing to the eye. If I'm spending an hour or two prepping a meal, making it LOOK fun and colorful is just an added benefit to me.
So much has been lost by the "Dine Out" culture, the pleasure of cooking for yourself and that feeling of pride when a pile of ingredients turns into a tasty, filling meal is incomparable. As Jeremy Clarkson is fond of saying "I did a thing!" is all too true here. Modern life is so "easy", for most of us the effort of making a meal for ourselves is about the biggest "challenge" we face in normal life. Hopefully you saved a tiny piece of toast for Eva, another channel I watch is K'eyush the Stunt Dog, and getting a tiny corner of toast from his Nan is the highlight of Key's day, lol.
Well, technically the flavonoids, that give plants their bright colors do have nutritional value. They're not as immediately necessary as the macronutrients, but long term, eating 'colorful' will keep you way healthier 😊
I love your adventurous spirit with cooking. I'm a stick-in-the mud, following a recipe with minor adjustments. Thank you for a great experience!
You should try to make fried green tomatoes. If you do, may I suggest not doing the traditional recipes you find online of southern fried green tomatoes, but in the way that most homemade southern fried green tomatoes are made, which is just adding a little salt and pepper to flour, slicing the tomatoes thin, and dredging directly in the flour, and frying until as fried as you want on both sides - fairly grown I think is best. Doing it this way preserves the nice and tangy flavor of the tomatoes without overwhelming them like the kinds you find in restaurants and online recipes. It’s just such a simple and clean recipe and the flavor of the tomatoes really shines, which is quite nice. They also make a great chutney.
Atomic shrimp: Spends £1 on 3 meals
Also Atomic shrimp: Throws Saffron into sludge
Looks wonderful, Sir. Excellently made.
Absolutely love fresh tomatoes. Its amazing the variety you can get out there, if you've only ever had the standard store bought stuff defo recommend picking up some varieties! Yellow tomatoes are delicious.
That looks really good and you've inspired me to have a go at making my own baked beans so a win all round, I think :)
I'm glad you finally got that delivery of SAFFRON t hat guy was asking about
Even though ive heard you tell me how to char a pepper around 47 times i still listen to every word
Loved this. I like how the title of the music track often has some relation to the video content!
I tend to find you get better results with saffron if you just infuse a tablespoon or two of hot water with it and then use that concentrate.
Golden beans, texture like Heenz
Better than canned, serve them with spam
Bell pepper roast, eat them on toast
You will be pleased...with golden beans
(Apologies to The Stranglers)
Looks wonderful. Thanks for the video Mr Shrimp
Nice watching you cooking without budget or other limitations (I love your other content too) .. these look really good!
Your dish looked amazing! Very creative
A good idea, I will be tweeking this a little, with all respect. Thank you for your ideas and endeavours.
They look delicious!
They look really appetising!
Happy to know that I'm not the only one who puts my bread to cool like that
You're just wild about saffron!
Saffron is just wild about me 🎶
Cheese & beans on toast is one of my favourite quick meal 😁 them golden baked beans look nice 🙂
This was very soothing to watch, thanks!
These look so delicious & very golden! I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for creating a channel everyone can enjoy. My teenage son & i always bond over your scam baiting videos, and I enjoy your nature & cooking ones. We appreciate you so very much. I feel like you’ve created a wonderful way for my son and I to relate to each other. Thanks again! 😊
That sounds and looks totally lush!
You never fail to amaze with your creativity, but I feel this should be put in your Top 10. I don't eat beans on toast (to be honest, I haven't really tried it), but this makes me want to. Thanks again for another great video!
Man, I've missed your content - dunno why I stopped watching it for a stint but I'm happy to be watching it again.
Few years back I ordered some yellow pear tomato seeds from eBay. I've been planting ever since. Prolific variety, good, acidic flavor and lots and lots of fruit.
I made it my yearly ritual to plant at least one unique and new variety. Some I would recommend is pineapple toms ( the big variety. Sweet, slightly fruity flavor) black krim ( from Crimea, they kind of have a smokey flavor to them) , and my absolute personal favorite, super sweet 100 which is a small cherry tomato variety but it's the most prolific and tastiest. It produces even after the summer until very cold temps sets in and again, produce in abundance.
Looks lovely!
What a magnificent dish. I may never make these, due to lack of ingredients, but I'd have dearly loved to taste these truly golden baked beans.
Grown and made with care and attention, with garden fresh ingredients, gotta be something special!
Those are perhaps the most beautiful yellow tomatoes I've ever seen.
Brilliant recipe, mate! I will be looking for yellow tomatoes and peppers to try this one out. Cheers.
What a delightful idea. Though it does beg the question as to what you'd use to flavor baked beans made with black/purple tomatoes.
❤ I loved this video - gardening and cooking all rolled into one ❤
Absolutely amazing recipe! I think I'll go cook some myself after watching this video!
I think it looks delicious! When I make baked beans (traditional red tomatoes and paprika) I use a good dollop of mango chutney for sweetness and depth of flavour. I will try making golden beans
Ooh, that does sound good!
Looks absolutely scrumptious 😊
This sounds delicious, plus watching it around lunchtime made me very hungry!
Looks bloody lovely.
Nothing quite like a blowtorch for roasting peppers or... well, anything, either - got the wife one for christmas last year (She's a baker by trade, has one at work but not at home) and I've wound up using it more than she has!
With such an expensive spice like saffron being added in, they are golden beans in more ways than just colour! Looks delicious, think I'll use more turmeric/paprika instead.
Mike, I have never had beans on toast, but I'd love to try yours! I imagine that sauce must have been just amazing. Home grown tomatoes just can't be matched. Thanks, as always!
Wow! You’re missing out on perfect comfort food.
Even standard UK Heinz with a good grind of black pepper, on buttered toast and a grating of cheddar is divine.
Glad to see that you're making good use of that very useful saffron (which is a red string) connection that the very helpful man from your email inbox arranged for you.
The golden beans look so good. Great idea.
What a fun idea! It hardly matters, but I think you may have gotten a more intense effect from the saffrom if you bloomed it in some warm water first.
Mike,
Green baked beans next??
Traffic lights on a plate?
This looks delicious. I love a good bean recipe. Now I know what to do with some of my garden tomatoes and peppers 🥰
Is the clear lid on your Pyrex baking dish intended to double as a pie plate? It almost looks like it would work!
Mr Shrimp, I think you should grow a ‘black’ cherry tomato called ‘Opal’. It’s a strange browny colour, but the most amazingly sweet s I’ve EVER tasted. A revelation
I love your creativity.
Now I know what to do with all these beans that have grown past the point of being able to eat them in the pod.
The most amazing looking beans on toast I have ever seen!
Another brilliant one for my recipe book 😊
Good job Mr. Shrimp, Baked beans are my favourite food.
Good to see you butter the toast before applying beans. The only time I don't do this is when I lay cheese on the toast and the beans on top to melt the cheese. No need for more fat when the cheese provides it.
I got a funny tiktok today from He Who Must Not Be Named, TR. He ordered beans on toast at a UK airport which cost £10. The sad morsel had no butter and just 22 beans in a ramekin to pour onto the dry toasts. It couldn't even cover one. He had to order another ramekin of beans for £2.09 to slightly cover the other toast 😆
You can ripen green tomatoes in a brown paper bag. I love the idea of golden baked beans!
This is definitely a 24 karats recipy! Your take on original recipes is golden! Something I take with me to try in my kitchen every time. I can say with whole my heart and soul, you’re one of my biggest influencer on UA-cam right now.
Nice to see someone else who "tents" their toast. I hate the toast sweat you get if you put it straight onto a plate.
For home made baked beans, I much prefer borlotti but that's personal taste. My version includes quite a lot of mustard, which would work well with your golden beans. I also don't boil the beans first. It's just beans and sauce in a casserole dish with a lid and slow cook for a couple of hours. That way, the beans thicken the sauce enough that a little water is needed at the end. Also, if you are going to the effort of blending, I would certainly leave the tomato skins and seeds in.
I'm going to be trying this, thanks for the idea.
Sickkkk thats actually awesome!
Wow they look absolutely glorious I'd love to try some for myself. It's shame you didn't have a large enough batch to can a few batches up to sell.
Always tent your toast, dryer and cooler so no soggy toast soaked in melted butter
Looks fantastic
Mr Shrimp you have inspired me to make my own beans for breakfast tomorrow. Once it warms up here in NZ I will be growing my own tomatoes - even better!
You could probably sell jars of short red string and market them as saffron. Very valuable more than an ounce of gold!
I love beans on toast with black pepper, without cheese, as the cheese deadens the pepper bite.
Heinz: *sweats nervously while looking at their stock price*
Thank you for the ideas!
Have you considered joining the heritage seed library Mr Shrimp? Just a thought as I was watching your tomatoes!
I can't believe the things I watch you do. Thanks for the entertainment! ❤
Wonderful, and far better than from a tin. I make my own baked beans which might be of interest, both as an alternative and a money saver...
Fry an onion in oil
add 1 clove garlic
1 chilli
Splash of Tabasco
1 tablespoon of vinegar
A dash of brown sauce
When brown add
1 tin butter beans
Half tin chopped tinned toms
add sugar and salt to taste
Thicken with corn flour if required
Garnish with ramson flowers (if available)
This whole meal costs ~£1.20 for 3 servings
Phew, I am so glad that I chose to eat breakfast before watching this video.
This looks delicious, I look forward to trying a (less original colour) orange version with my favourite tomato variety Sun Gold
