Winter Garden Florida is located north of the Magic Kingdom and one of the great little towns near Disney. In this episode we explore Winter Garden history, the Winter Garden Farmers Market and Winter Garden restaurants and shops. Winter Garden is one of the best places to live in Florida and is a one of the cities near Orlando Florida. Downtown Winter Garden has a rich history, from orange groves to the current day vibrant community of shops and restaurants. After a devastating fire in the early 1900's the town required that all downtown buildings be made of brick. The current buildings were built between 1912 and 1945 and many, like the Moon Cricket Grille, still have their original floors, ceiling and walls.
The West Orange Bike Trail goes through Winter Garden Florida. The West Orange Bike Trail is 22 miles long and runs from Oakland Florida to Apopka Florida. Connecting to the Clermont Trail there are 34 miles of continuous biking trails. If you were to bike the trail and return you could bike 68 miles!
Learn about Winter Garden restaurants, including the Moon Cricket Grille, the Whole Enchilada and the Attic Door. One of my favorite restaurants near Disney is the Chefs Table in the Edgewater Hotel building. Did you know that there was a Winter Garden brewery? The Crooked Can Brewing Company is a popular local hangout with live music and great beer brewed right there! It is located in the Plant Street Market, where you will find butchers, sandwiches, breads and even donuts.
The Winter Garden Farmers Market is one of the best in the country. Here you will find unique vendors and fresh produce, along with live musicians. The tomatoes are some of the best I have found in the area! The Farmers Market is on Saturday but make sure you get here early for parking and before the market closes at 1:00pm.
The Winter Garden Community Theater was built in 1935 and was the first theaters in Central Florida to show "talkies". The theater has been renovated and is again a historic treasure of Central Florida.
The Edgewater Hotel opened in 1927 and has a rich history of being the winter home for many northern families and has even had famous celebrities like Humphry Bogart and Errol Flynn stay at the Edgewater Hotel. Winter Garden Florida is so close to the Walt Disney World Resort that many of the workers building the Magic Kingdom stayed at the Edgewater Hotel.
If you are looking for things to do near Disney World a trip to Winter Garden Florida is a great choice. Rent a bike and enjoy the West Orange Biking Trail or visit the Winter Garden shopping areas and Winter Garden restaurants.
