Videos like this make me cry. So much of the history of American music is in their sound, bluegrass, country, rock and roll, psychedelia, folk, pop, jazz-like improvisation. And even after all the changes on their long, strange trip, they never lost their original sound. I was a long-time skeptic and critic of them. I had to get older, with my own touches of grey, before I understood what they were doing. That was, they were celebrating life. Now I am more grateful.
Just got tears in my eyes and it couldn't believe it was from this video. Glad I am not the only one :)
Very good comment! Very insightful and retrospective!
Ugh! Tearing up reading this and responses. I feel the exact same way. I turned 43 yesterday and I'm going down a 80's video rabbit hole. I'm a huge fan now and got into the them on the surface in my late teens in the 90's but I only remember seeing Touch of Grey on MTV as a kid. Excellent comment and thanks for showing me I'm not alone in having that place in my mind where the I have this profound, nostalgic reponse to this band like nothing else and definitely no other band. Truly magick!
@Jeff Dawson I think I painted myself into the same type of corner. I've always been the more sober type, into all types of music but turning from certain cultures, especially when they involved drugs. Because of that, I missed out on a lot of experience that didn't push me into the culture. Here I sit in my sixties, becoming a fan of the Dead's music.
There's a lot to catch up with, hearing only what I did on the radio so long ago.
I agree, they were such an incredible band and still are. I started listening to the dead a few years ago and its honestly changed my life and the way I look at things. I just wish I had broken through to it earlier, specifically when my uncle was still alive, he was a huge dead head. I was just never into rock that much,I didnt mind it. But when he passed away my curiousity grew and decided to sit down and check out some dead tracks and I`ve just been hooked ever since. Its some of the most beautiful music i`ve ever heard. I honestly think if everyone in the world habitually listened to the dead, the world would be a better place.
One of the most underrated Dead songs

What makes you believe it's underrated?
I just bought the album . It’s great
I love this song because it's me ✌️✌️😎👍
Miss you more than ever, brother. I'm passing the message to the next generation. LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!
80’s-era Grateful Dead is often overlooked when fans consider their studio output. Their lone big chart hit “Touch Of Grey” is the one song that stands above the rest in terms of popularity from that time period. The 1989 album Built To Last is somewhat of a trivial footnote as the band’s final studio album, but the music on it is largely forgotten.
The lead single and opening song from that album is a piece of work that’s good enough to stand toe-to-toe even with the band’s finest. “Foolish Heart” is a marvelous combination of the band’s inimitable instrumental chemistry and lyricist Robert Hunter’s profound ponderings. Throw in a great performance by Jerry Garcia and you’ve got a true gem in the Dead’s imposing catalog.
Garcia, who wrote the song’s music, spoke about its unique construction in a 1989 interview. “The thing that’s interesting about ‘Foolish Heart’ is it doesn’t have any pads in it,” he said. “Nobody’s playing chords in the song, not anybody. Everybody’s playing lines, and the lines hook up and tell you everything you need to know about the harmonic content of the song. You don’t wonder where it’s going. It’s so beautifully designed, it’s like a clock. It’s really lovely. It surprised me it came out so interesting and so perfect and so totally its own personality. That’s the Grateful Dead in action, really.”
You can hear what he’s talking about in the way that his guitar and Bob Weir’s weave around the keyboard hook of Brett Mydland. Against that backdrop, Hunter spins a series of commands that come off like a beguilingly gritty cross between Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” and Polonius’ speech to Laertes in Hamlet with a little Confucian wisdom thrown in as well. These lyrics are life advice that can keep your mind sane and your heart pure if you can tune in to its cosmic wavelength.
This advice, at times heartfelt (“Learn to speak/Speak with the wisdom of a child/Directly from the heart”), at times irreverent (“Sign the Mona Lisa/With a spraycan, call it art”), gets serious when Hunter addresses the dangers of playing fast and loose with your love. “A foolish heart will call on you,” Garcia sings in the bridge with harmony help from his bandmates, “To toss your dreams away.” This kind of recklessness, the song suggests, is the most harmful thing you can encounter: “A selfish heart is trouble/But a foolish heart is worse.”
In the final verse, Garcia brings it all home with a twinkle in his vocal like a mischievous sage. “Stoke the fires of paradise,” he sings, “With coals from Hell to start/But never give your love, my friend/Unto a foolish heart.” For either the diehard Deadhead who hasn’t heard it in a while or the casual fan who hasn’t heart it at all, “Foolish Heart” is worth the listen as a shining example of late-period Grateful Dead that sounds like the band in its prime.
Beautifully Spoken My Friend, Best Description I've ever heard of. That added a lil bit more understanding & meaning to an already deeply beloved song. Thank You : ) Tommy
Very eloquent... In my opinion the Grateful Dead were one of the few bands in history that always sounded like they were in their prime...

We miss you Jerry wherever you are
He's in heaven. You'll see him again one beautiful, easy, happy day long from now. He leads the dead. It'll be a cakewalk for you having realized him.
Nooo, he is here😉
"Speak with wisdom, like a child, directly to the heart..." still renews me everytime! 💓
jerry is grateful hes dead this world has gone to hell in a bucket
Rip Brent
East of Eadan
And his hair was Perfect!
Aaawooo
Going for the “falkor the luck dragon” look
Ware wolves of London.....lol
RIP the two members of The Grateful Dead
Jerry Garcia (August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995), aged 53
Brent Mydland (October 21, 1952 - July 26, 1990), aged 37
You both will be remembered as legends.
Whoever posted this. Thankyou so much. My life sucks and this helped me
Hope all is well!
"Carve your name in ice and wind" just beautiful poetry.
i knew Jerry.............Tears every time i hear this song...! a lovely person Bless Him
All these years later, these lyrics are profoundly meaningful for me now more than ever. Such a great lesson. If you ever get confused, listen to the music play.
Lol you were on gas when that profound meaning came to you, weren't ya? ;)
a selfish heart is trouble but a foolish heart is worse 🙂
Hunter was a fucking genius….. this song is definitely one of the best. As is every song by the dead ;)
These lyrics said that I had a similar experience as the writer of the song with a girl that had a foolish heart...she also had no integrity and was a nympho with a healthy appetite for Salami... She didn't stand by me when I needed her and it changed my life seemingly for the worse, but it was a blessing because within 4 years I moved from PA to Colorado and found that I was meant to be here. That never would have happened if I hadn't hit my new low bottom....
Can I ask if there is a good way to describe what the song is saying besides the obvious protecting of ones heart?
This music makes me feel so good.
Garcia had such a beautiful voice.
The Dead. You either get it or you don't. And if you don't please don't act like you do. It's not becoming. Peace.
We miss you Jerry!! 💗💗
80's hair even got the Boys. LOVE this tune, man.
I came here to comment on the SF mullets on Jerry and Bill, and you got to it 2 months before I did!!.......Love them forever and a day, anyway!!
The wisdom in this song is more apparent with age.
A very beautiful song with a very real meaning..Rest in peace Jerry
Too bad this is such an underrated song! One of my absolute favorites! As they say, give us this day... our Grateful Dead.
On that morning in August of 1995 I remember waking up in that crappy attic apartment in Little Five Points here in Atlanta to the announcer on WSB 750AM saying "Rock & roll lost a legend today....." and in the little pause after I whispered "Jerry" - made sense with how crazy that summer had been on tour and how sick he looked near the end. The station started playing this song of all songs by the GD to pick to associate with the band (doubt this one was ever heard more than a few times on the radio.....why not Truckin' or Touch or Uncle John's I will never understand). So, this song will always remind me of that sad day and my wet shirt from the tears my lady Deadhead friends cried into my shoulder. I kept my composure intact though, even at the memorial we had at Piedmont Park to honor Jerry that night. It wasn't until a few months later when I heard a Stella Blue from 89 on tape and Jerry sang "when it seems like all this life was just a dream..." that I finally let it all go and grieved. Still miss you, Jerry. Anyway, this is a pretty good later-era Jerry tune with some really great lines from Bobby (he's practically playing lead throughout the verses - this song is a great representation of his unique playing style). Wonder why Billy didn't make the video shoot?
+atlbobr69 I saw him, Did you actually watch the video ???
+Phil M Billy was added in after the fact, probably just so people didn't wonder if he was out of the band or something.
We all remember where we were when Jerry died and this is a very underrated newer song gettin me thru sum shit amazing lyrics every word
atlbobr you brought tears to my eyes with that post.
atlbobr69 Yep I remember exactly where I was. At the department store I worked at before opening. We had a radio station on and not the Muzak yet. I let out this god aweful sound I can’t even describe it. Of course the one coworker that was a fan was off that day, I was walking around in this haze of sadness
Jeez… Jerry would have been 80 next year. I really wish we had the last 26 years with him.
I think this band has some potential.... lets sign them up. maybe they can go out on tour for a little while.....maybe 50 years or so.
Phil really lays it down on this pleasant tune
Love it miss Jerry. saw him drinking cappuccino on bleeker street just to say hello to him meant everything to me
Dude, phil is a stud without his glasses!! I never knew he was so handsome , in a totally plutonic way of course
+FortWarren - You mean "platonic", not plutonic -- LOL
of course
Pluto used to be a planet , I feel so cheated now.
Not that there's anything wrong with that
What an absolutely great melody. One of my faves by the Dead.
With that awesome melodic figure from Brent.
I love how everyone knows how magical this is you can see it in their faces
blooming rose: I love how you're a fan of both the Dead and George Harrison. BTW the Shook Twins are pretty good, interesting use of the banjo, nice!
The alter-ego of the band.... fine craftsmen. The music equivalent of painterly.
It is an alter-ego because the live band was much different. You were vital part of the live band.... energy.
This side of them is like eye candy... like a Van Gogh. Both make my heart smile.
.....so glad Dead&Co. are playing this now......I still miss Jerry-
Jerry looks so healthy here, It's so sad that a mere four years later he passed away.
"Sign the Mona Lisa with a spray can call it art." I'll love this band after death...Deadhead forever, forever Gratefuly Deadicated!
J.D. Casey IV i love that lyric as well
Lyrics in whole album are Chill ridden
I always loved this line for some reason
How have I been a DeadHead since 92 and I missed this video somewhere in my travels. Excellent! Always loved Foolish Heart from 4/4/90 was one of my early tapes.
Loved, loved, loved this album. The sculpted approach was stupendous even if some of the songs weren’t their best. Every phrase just carved on this tune. Weir is playing some awesome stuff.
On replay...for the rest of my days
Ageless song. Mystical, melodious. This song is a gift.
My favorite band of all time !!!!!
These guys cleaned up well!
only took me 30 years to see this video
They played it back to back with not fade away on one of those new-year eve shows that were broadcast everywhere!
In the dark was the first studio album I bought from the dead. It holds a special place in my heart because I had to let it grow on me because it wasn’t live
Rhythm and lead guitar players alike, listen to Bobby on this! Such intricate parts, texture, finesse etc
Jerry's solo is pure class
(Paraphrasing) Jerry, in his 1989 interview, said "a studio recording is like a painting, everything is polished. Playing music live is like a snapshot, a Polaroid."
True this.
Jerry’s hair is everything lol. love it
Bobby with his hair slicked back. They had so much fun doing this. My religion, these boys, forever. Miss you Jerry.
"Stoke the fire of paradise"
F yeah!
How do Jerrys expressions always match my feelings...
heard this at my first show at buckeye lake 88. and next time at deer creek 89. Great song. shine on jerry, vince, brent, keith, pigpen.
Carve your name
Carve your name in ice and wind
Search for where
Search for where the rivers end
Or where the rivers start
Do everything that's in you
That you feel to be your part
But never give your love, my friend,
Unto a foolish heart
Leap from ledges
Leap from ledges high and wild
Learn to speak
Speak with wisdom like a child
Directly from the heart
Crown yourself the king of clowns
Or stand way back apart
But never give your love, my friend
Unto a foolish heart
Shun a friend
Shun a brother and a friend
Never look
Never look around the bend
Or check a weatherchart
Sign the Mona Lisa
With a spraycan, call it art
But never give your love, my friend
Unto a foolish heart
A foolish heart will call on you
To toss your dreams away
Then turn around and blame you
For the way you went astray
A foolish heart will cost you sleep
And often make you curse
A selfish heart is trouble
But a foolish heart is worse
Bite the hand
Bite the hand that bakes your bread
Dare to leap
Where the angels fear to tread
Till you are torn apart
Stoke the fires of paradise
With coals from Hell to start
But never give your love, my friend
Unto a foolish heart
Unto a foolish heart....
Amie OMalia thanks

WOW! I haven't heard this song in years! Great song! I've always liked this song!
RIP my brother ❤️
miss the days!
:,) Always will remind me of my snigglefritz ( a man who loves the grateful dead with all of his heart
Such an amizing song that is WAY too underplayed.
I heard this for the 1st time tonite and I liked it immediately, it is so well produced and relaxing and nice lyrics
Criminally underrated dead track
My local classic station plays alot of Dead and this is usually in the mix :)
"Sign the Mona Lisa with a spray can, call it art, but never give your love, my friend, to a foolish heart"... And "Just a Little Light" was one of the best songs ever written too. Was lucky enough to see a live rendition of that song at a Phil & Fiends (Warren, Jackie, Jeff, Joe, John & Phil) show in Broomfield, back in 2012 and was surprised that no one I was with recognized it as a Brent tune. Built to Last was a masterpiece in every aspect. AND it was their 13th studio album! Thanks for sharing the video!
"Sign the Mona Lisa with a spray can, call it art." Good lyric
My feelings are free with this art...
I remember wakin up to this tune several years ago after a very strange mushroom trip at a festival in shartlesville, pa......it was like an old friend
+oreokookie www.equip.org
+thankyou2532 Sorry forgot the part of the Bible where Christ said "Thou shall not consumest of the mushrooms". Maybe you should enlighten me.
+oreokookie I WAS AT THAT FESTIVAL!!!!!!! I REMEMBER THIS PLAYING AS WELL
very strange 3 hours of moving rivets, I was under water, under submarines with alot of screws and rivets..I was in that pine stand infront of the stage area.when I came out of it this was playing- very strange
Ryan Freiman was never in the bible!!!...I was in the wilderness, like christ, though!!!
Dare to leap, learn to speak ✌
sometimes they sound so much better in the studio than live, like this song!!! great video too.......
God bless I haven't seen that video since I was a teenager. I love ya Jer.
One of my favorite videos-ever. And a Mullet, too.
when mullets were mainstream
Actually, one of mWHICH was when I saw my first show ! AND,I started learning how to play their songs on guitar about the same time !
y very fave Dead tunes. And,I've been listening to them since BEFORE I was 12 years old in 1974 !

Favorite Dead song.
This, and Ripple are my favorites, but to be fair, so many of the Grateful Dead songs that I haven't heard.
Essa música é fantástica e atemporal... 💀
from the days when MTV stood for Music Television. not 16 and pregnant.....
Sean Spring Yup.
Yes--Mtv sucks now
Funny, I don’t recall seeing this on MTV. Course it was a whole 2 years after Touch of Grey, so by then they were probably past MTV’s brief attention span.
I agree 👍
👍👍🤣🤣👏
I love this song!
Love live Dead obviously. But Built to Last album holds a special place for me
Literally insane, the masters. I am in awe
If this was all I'd ever heard of the dead, I seriously would have never listened to them again. Thank God for bootlegs.
wow,well said,..you aren't alone...to me it's like coming home after long trip,no pun intended...it's nice to roam..but there's no place like home...
The best times of my life!

I LOVE THIS SONG !!!!!
When the gloves come off and the hands are black...so awesome
I don’t notice and I’m black & white. Thank you kindly 😊
Wish I’d listened.
one of the only highlights off this album
Standing on the Moon is gorgeous. One of the all time great Jerry ballads. Built to Last is also good.
The world would be infinitely better the more people followed this advice.
❤ .. peace .
Grateful Dead Touch of Grey video I remember because I had surgery when I was a kid the nurse let me listened to Mtv
if only they had played a video like this at a shoreline show ... i'd still be on the hill
Breathtaking.
Love this song and the whole Built To Last album (especially “Blow Away”)
There’s something sad about the Grateful Dead knowing the death that surrounded them .
They may be going to hell in a bucket, but at least they enjoyed the ride
This is one of the best
The quality of the vid and audio are both fantastic; thanks for sharing!
I love this song because of the myself 😔☺️
RIP Jerry and Brent!!!
I cried
a lovely view of heaven, but id rather be with you
Thanks for posting this! It's a treat to see the Grateful Dead in the "MTV" format. Really nice video, sweet like the song...
