      If it leads to the Mad Queen's death somehow it won't be disappointing to me. The only thing that would be any more disappointing to me with this show after this season is if Dany and Jon both marry and end up ruling the Iron Throne together happily ever after. I think Dany is gonna die, the Iron Throne and King's Landing will be destroyed, and if Jon survives I do think he'll be made King of Westeros but I wouldn't be shocked if he grants independence to each of the seven kingdoms as it was before Aegon's Conquest. Having one monarch in control of everything has been a blight upon the world, absolute power in King's Landing brought out the worst in everyone and I think Jon especially cause he doesn't really want power will realize this. If he does liberate the seven kingdoms I bet he retains his Kingship in the North and immediately rides there at the very end ostensibly to begin the process of rebuilding HIS neck of the woods while the rest of the kingdoms do the same.

    I have been a staunch defender of the show and appreciate your willingness to try to analyze what's happening instead of complaining. But it is this very video that convinces me more than ever that we needed at least a 9th season to flesh this stuff out. Or they could have stuffed the 1st 3 episodes into last season and played this stuff out a bit slower. Anyway, I suspect most of this will be in the final book "Dream of Spring". We will, as a species, be extremely lucky if we ever get a finished version of that book. I will settle for Aristotle-like notes. But I remain hopeful.

    • @GonzoTehGreat
      @GonzoTehGreat 5 років тому +21

      Yeah, the story deserved at least another season. They've been rushing things since S7 and the closer we get to the end the more obvious this becomes. They should've stuck to the original format of 10 x 1 hour episodes and planned for 9 seasons, if not 10.

      @@GonzoTehGreat Yes but as they have said. Actors wanna move on. Everybody will rank this as the most definitive thing they did...but they all wanna move on.

      @@GonzoTehGreat One other thing I'll say is...I believe that the 1st 3 episodes this season are S.O.L.I.D. as ever and it's a total fan hit-job all the crying. Especially the Arya/NK thing, which I believe they DID set up for multiple seasons, and BRILLIANTLY.
      So really my only "problem" was the last 30 minutes of episode 4, where they obviously went too fast setting up all these very complicated political machinations.....
      Not much of which will get ironed out next episode unless the battle proves to be anticlimactic and not as long or involved as Long Night.

    • @GonzoTehGreat
      @GonzoTehGreat 5 років тому +8

      @@r.a.c.bysteveandrews3964 I never got the impression it was the actors pusing to wrap up the show and move on. I think they'd be fine with another year or two, especially after investing so much. It's not like they have offers of other roles streaming in....
      Remember the cast of LotR? They committed to a decade of filming and some of them were already well known (McKellen, Mortensen, Tyler, Weaving etc). Actors should commit fully to the role at hand and if that means you're cast as Jon or Daenarys then you need to see that character through to the end. If anything, this should be less of an issue with GoT which (until S7 and S8) wasn't afraid to kill off characters.

    • @Hrothgrar
      @Hrothgrar 5 років тому +5

      @@r.a.c.bysteveandrews3964 I bet "wanting to move on" is the official reason and not the actual one. I bet it is that all of their salaries have risen and HBO wants them to restart with spinoffs and unknown actors again.
      Otherwise I have no idea why D&D didn't just simply pass this to someone else who actually wants to finish it properly.
      The show has become ridiculously expensive to produce.

    Here’s a question: if Jon has the legitimate claim to the throne according to typical Westeros succession practices, is it technically treason to support him over Daenerys? Isn’t it technically be treason to back Daenerys over him?
    If Jon really doesn’t want to rule, the easiest thing would be for him to announce to the world who he is, take the throne and then abdicate and give it to Dany. Targaryens have abdicated in the past....

    • @snapeinvader
      @snapeinvader 5 років тому

      @array s Except that Dany would not want to share her power, even with Jon. They say it on the show, she says it herself. People would ask Jon, and he would have to fumble it to Daenerys. She'd get sick of that real quick, but Jon abdicating would work if he couldn't see the dangers Daenerys poses to the realm.

    Excellent analysis. I see the tragedy developing as well. In fact I think if episode 4 had just been titled "That's not me," more people would have enjoyed it. Every single character in episode 4 has their "that's not me" moment and Jon actually has two. I'm not going to write paragraphs pointing each one out but they are there and fairly obvious. @@danielholtom7777 Totally disagree with that. The book and the show sets their own rules for who can be killed and how. So people evaluating show rules with book rules are simply evaluating apples and oranges. The show demonstrated that white walkers are not afraid of fire numerous times. And Valyrian steel/dragon glass have dragon fire in them yes, but obviously they are also made from some other magic that made the NK.
      IMO, had they killed the NK with dragon fire, THAT would have been poor writing because there was never any foreshadowing about it.
      But there was plenty of foreshadowing about Arya's skill-set being THE skill-set required to get close enough to kill the NK the only way he could be killed. Arya's justification does also come from the books....from the description of what she was trained to be like. "Quick as a snake. Quiet as a shadow".
      Jon, Sam, and Bran figured out how to kill him. They figured out that killing the walkers also drops the weights. Jon assembled the allies necessary to give Arya that very paper-thin window needed to slip in.
      And, objectively, the show NEVER gave us a hint that Jon was anything other than inadequate when matching up against the NK personally. Ditto Daenerys.

    I love Varys, he’s one of my favorite game players and complex characters. His competitive banter with Little Finger is some of the best dialogue in the history of television as far as I’m concerned and a big part of why I fell in love with the show. The actor Conleth Hill portrays him so accurately and is exceptional. It’s redundant bringing up how the writing fell off after season 4 but it’s especially evident with a character like Varys who isn’t participating in battles or flying dragons. His character is built around being clever and pragmatic but without the multi layered storytelling, he’s been relegated to mostly a background piece. I also feel that omitting the Aegon/Young storyline it prevented Varys from becoming more of a multi dimensional character.

      @Daniel PereiraVary's tells Tyrion "I will act in their interest no matter the personal cost" in regards to protecting the people of the realm in the throne room of Dragonstone. He then goes on to say "I have spoken as honestly as I can". Then if we go back earlier in the episode Vary's follows Dany when she leaves the victory celebration. The next time we see her she is in Jon's room where they speak about who he really is. Very possible Vary's over hears this, being the sneaky spider that he is. With this knowledge he formulates a plan to begin manipulating Cersei and Dany. He relays Dany's travel route and that Rhaegal is injured, thus making him an easier target. He can't exactly let Cersei and Euron know that the information came from him or else he won't be able to latch onto Jon if his plan comes to fruition. I make these assumptions not on what makes logical sense, but on what makes sense in accordance to the story we have been presented over the last two seasons.

If Daenerys is going to burn the people holding up in the Keep, then he almost has to try to stop her doing what she is planning to do. Since Cersei blew up her own people, she is unacceptable. She had a nice set up in Mereen on top of that pyramid where she was the absolute ruler. Westeros was a different animal than Essos. As long as the wheel is broken the end will have justified the means. Bittersweet indeed. You may be correct, a few more episodes showing the progression of her struggles might have helped her ardent fans understand where her character was heading in a particular direction. I've always viewed her with a keen eye so I noticed things in seasons 1, 2, and 3 that kept escalating and I've seen the slow progression where she currently is. And how quickly did the writers forget that when Dany was losing to Cersei in Season 7 and they were on Dragonstone, Daenerys followed Jon’s advice when he said more or less: if you burn innocent people, you aren’t different, you’re just like all the tyrants that came before. Jon suggests they arrive at Winterfell on horseback and not on the dragons and Dany takes his advice. I can see why Varys thinks Jon would be the better, more tempered ruler but there are fewer examples where Dany doesn’t take Jon’s advice, more often than not she does, which Varys should be aware of so it doesn’t make sense to me that he writes off marriage between the two.

    And if he wants to overthrow Dany because he thinks Jon will be more controllable, he should know better. Jon is very much like Ned, who mostly avoided Varys' manipulation back in season 1. Why would he think that Jon will be easier? Jon will always be driven by honour as well, and that will affect how controllable he is at court. That is, if he actually agrees to become King.

Daenerys has taken her advisors advice more than people give her credit for and the few times she doesn’t she’s labeled an impulsive tyrant. You can’t usurp a throne with diplomacy alone, you have to use some force and hopefully the violence does not bleed into the innocent. Daenerys asked Jon to keep it a secret and he told his sisters anyway and then Sansa was told to keep quiet and she spoke anyway, out of motivation for house Stark alone. So Daenerys was right, everyone knowing would sew the seeds of destruction. But oh Jon and his “honor”. He’s just like Ned but somehow I don’t think Jon will get killed for it. Daenerys might.

    The real question is how he'll betray her, and how well he'll succeed at it before being killed by dragon fire.
    My bet, is he'll forge and "find" evidence of R+L=J, and share it with the realm's lords. Dany realizing his betrayal, metaphorically, or literally right as the ravens leave. And when she roasts him alive, Tyrion's loyalty will end too.

I would have killed him back on dragonstone when she pardoned him; her gut was right. She's going to die so in the end it doesn't matter. Varys is on borrowed time anyway. There is two big differences. One, Jon would likely not execute Varys if his treason was the Westeros equivalent of Wikileaking R+L=J. Danny would, and most likely will kill him for that reason. The second difference is Jon will execute him cleanly. He'll kill him via his own hands by hanging or beheading. Danny will kill him via Dragon fire, and enjoy it like she did with the Slave masters.
      Varys really already covered why Jon is better. He's far, far more tempered. He keeps his emotions in check. Danny is ruled by her emotions in contrast.
      Or as fans have put it, Danny is a conqueror, but Jon is a ruler/builder. Westeros doe not need a conqueror as a ruler after a massive civil war and zombie apocalypse. It needs a ruler to rebuild.

This very thing is what the Queen was - above all others - supposed to have done, especially *this Queen* given the image that she has built for herself. At this point, she seems determined to become everything she fought to overturn.
    Yes, Varys will quite probably die, but his attitude of serving the people regardless of what danger he puts himself in, and especially *now* when the war is almost won (and he has a good chance to secure a peaceful dream-like job for life) is nothing short of admirable, in my view.

  • @GonzoTehGreat

    Varys does indeed have the truest of motives to put a benevolent ruler on the throne and, despite his doubts, until recently that person was Daenarys. However, if he betrays her now, he risks not just his life but also Cersei winning the war. The battle of Winterfell evened the odds and Dany only has a single dragon left but Jon remains loyal to her, so together they still have a chance to defeat Cersei. Once she's out of the way they can worry about who sits on the Iron Throne.
    Varys knows all this, so if he decides to betray her now, instead of waiting until Cersei is defeated, it will feel contrived, as if the show writers are trying to create drama via conflict when there isn't any justification for it. We've already see them do this in S7 when they tried to mislead viewers with a nonsensical falling out between Sansa and Arya which turned out to be misdirection so they could introduce a plot twist where Littlefinger is executed. That particular story arc has been justifiably criticised for being poorly written, unnecessary and a lazy way to dispose of the greatest schemer and player of the game, so if they do the same thing with Varys I don't think it will be received well.

      Agree completely. Had so many theory discussions with people leading into this season and maybe up till the night king was defeated then it was like ok what now. Then they want to try and go old school GOT with only 3 episodes and one probably being taken up by a battle. Way too rushed and shitty planning. There will probably be something they consider shocking without the buildup of past seasons

    What about the possibility that Varys sees that Cerci is now in a stronger position and that there is no means of a quick and decisive victory against her?
    A long protracted siege/war would only see the burden and costs passed down to the people. Maybe he realizes that now is no longer the opportune time to try and usurp Cerci, and the most efficient way to snuff out Dany's forces is to fracture them with an internal dispute over whether Dany or Jon should ultimately rule.

      It makes sense, but would cersei really make a better realm in the longrun or would it protract the suffering further? Or would a gamble here and now in hopes of ousting Cersei for a chance at a better realm what varys is shooting for, actually half way through this comment i realized the writers and producers dont really care about GoT anymore so we should probably view this as half boiled fan fic rather than the source story.

    My view of Varys and his overall character development was that of a contemplative. His concern with the greater good of the realm and his abilities to discern the qualities of one who would have capacity’s of a promising ruler added to my initial view. Yet in truth his archetypal character was an almost exact carbon copy of Petyr Baelish. Just contrasting motives. Varys is a sneaky and surreptitious figure. His clandestine ways along with a deployment of little bird eyes on the back of his metaphorical head made him one of the most intriguing characters in all of Westeros. The unraveling of this season’s plot and of last seasons foreshadowing seem to make his demise inevitable.

    I wish to point out one crucial flaw in Varys's reasoning. When Tyrion suggested that Jon and Dany together could rule, Varys pointed out that (1) Jon was not used to the idea of an incestuous marriage, and (2) Jon would allow Dany to make the decisions. It is the second reason that shows a flaw in Varys's criteria for what makes a good ruler. According to him, Dany will not listen to her advisors (which is not true), and she will not listen to Jon. Therefore, because she can't be CONTROLLED (aka-controlled by Varys), she is therefore unfit to rule. Think about it. Every single time that Varys has turned away from a ruler was, in part, because each ruler would not always listen to Varys (aka-Varys couldn't control them). While there were legitimate reasons why he left some of them (the Mad King, Joffrey), his problem with Tommen was not because he was cruel, but because he was weak because he was controlled by his wife, Margery (and thus, apparently, unfit to rule.)
    I do not doubt the sincerity of Varys's aims, but his views are wrong in the sense that he evaluates rulers in part on whether they listen to him or not. This is erroneous on his part, as well as selfish.
    I also respectfully disagree with you about Varys's plan. While he will work behind the scenes to make Jon king, he will also try to plot to kill Dany. He has to, because he knows that Dany has a dragon that she will use if anyone tries to threaten her. Also, if he moves too quickly and makes Jon king, he knows that Jon may marry Dany to make things right and make her queen. This would mean (in Varys's eyes, at least), that Dany would control the kingdom through Jon. Therefore, Dany must die before Jon is made king. For this reason, someone will betray his plot.

Though the writers may have decided to change that because the plot demands it...

    It seems that Dany will either have to die or be left to her throne. She doesn’t seem to want to share power and will not yield power to Jon/Aegon. The bittersweet may be Jon channeling Rhett Butler: “frankly my dear, I’m fucking off up North to hang out with my peeps up In Hardhome. My dire wolf misses me.”

    Two things: 1. I think Varys does care about the realm, but I also think he wouldn't mind running it himself as he told Oberyn Martell. 2. Do you think Varys is going to try to turn the Golden Company's allegiance to Jon as Rhaegar Targaryen's son, Aegon? That would be a way to force Jon to take the throne and minimize the bloodshed. I see Jon accepting the throne with Dany by his side and Drogon either melting the iron throne or Varys and living happily ever after in HIgh Garden until the great Other comes for their child the prince that was promised.

      Jon doesn't want it, but if there's no other person in line to take it or if the people are screaming and insisting that he take it only then would he take it. Not for himself, for THEM, the people he serves. This puts him in direct contrast with Danaerys who basically like the Mad King said "they don't have to like me, but they will respect me, for I am their rightful Queen". That's precisely why she'd be worse than Jon in a single sentence that was uttered by her. I do think Varys will die screaming that Jon's claim is better than hers once Tyrion tells her that Varys is planning on supporting Jon instead, and to Tyrion's shock I think she'll order his immediate execution, which will cause Tyrion to switch sides as well most likely. If she does something too crazy Jon might actually be put in a position where he has to kill her himself, it's either that or she's going to end up doing something foolish in her anger that gets her killed somehow or another just anyway.
