- Freight trains are still running through Hiram, Georgia, just like they have for decades. But, wrecked locomotives and cars next to the mainline are a reminder that railroading can be a dangerous job.

Amazing captured footage with crystal clear images , well done you did a superb job.
Thank you!
@@v12productionsHow did the train derail?
This is a great video! I was there the morning after, I talked to one of the clean up crew and got some good pictures and video of it all,it was foggy and rainy providing a Eerie atmosphere. If Anyone wants to see them
I would love to see the pictures and video
Where can we see them

Interesting report. Thanks for doing the research to bring it to us.
What's weird is that when ns 8099 was rerailed, it didnt have that much damage. Just some scratched paint, broken handrails and some hits to the radiator but looked to be in good condition. Yet ns 8133 has a similar wreck before it and look at it!
one had a Green southern horseshoe, and the other had a black horseshoe.
Hmmm Daja vu
Excellent report. Thanks for all the effort.
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a mixture of bad mantince and driver error, glad no one was badly injured 🙂
Im from the hiram/dallas area. My mom still lives there. I remember her telling me about this when she came to visit. It was a devastating site. From what I remember, that switch hasn’t been replaced since before i was born, and that would have to be before 2002. Thank you for covering this, i have yet to check out the locomotives myself. I have a friend who works for NS and could probably get me clearance to take a look at them.
Great video as always. I'm surprised that these units are still sitting here. You'd think NS would want to get these sent to Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona as soon as as possible. Neat fact about those codes for accidents on the FRA Excel sheet.
Thank GOD the Train was only going 25mph. 2-3 times that Speed would of had deadly consequences.
It is amazing how much old and broken equipment is left on unused sidings. In the case of old engines there are entire railyards full of them. I imagine some percentage will be recycled in some way but he vast majority will be passed along for someone to deal with decades away. It would represent a cost to deal with them in real time but the executives of railroads would not want to decrease their profitability which would impact their bonuses. Taking the money and running and leaving the mess for the future to deal with.
I agree. The messes are so unsightly and send a grim message, for sure.
Very interesting video and great footage.
Thank you!
As a 37 year employee of a commuter railroad and working in both the M/W and the operations department, your reporting is clear and on point...Worn flanges can be razor sharp and if the leading point switch is even minutely out of adjustment, things go bad very quickly....great video...Thanks ! ( retired in Florida 😁)
Really appreciate that! Thank you for sharing.
Great video, thanks for the info and update! 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Thanks
You put together a fantastic report.....as usual.
Being able to interpret spreadsheet codes is a great ability. Wondering if you have looked into the Scamtrak wreck in Montana a few months back. It has been way too quiet on that incident. People died there and no report whatsoever.
But, again thanks for the service you are doing for us railfans.
Thanks! I'll see if I can find any updates on the Montana incident.
Excellent shoot; thanks for your time to show and explain this > mess!
I guess I shouldn't wonder *why* this catastrophe hasn't been cleaned up, ie, engines scrapped, boxcars dealt with, wood scattered. It seems that NS and rr's in general, simply don't care about 1) maintenance or 2) keeping property tidied up.
NS, this a bad look.
I drove over that overpass just a few days ago and couldn't believe all that was still there.
Nice coverage !!
Good job. Your day is coming when your thoroughness in reporting gets you recognized in a good way.
That's a well researched update, many thanks ! Subscribed.
Thanks!
How likely are these engines and boxcars to be salvaged once the dispatcher gives the approval to collect them?
Great job.
I visited this site just yesterday! Viewed from a distance of course.
very safe location for those locomotives.
I'm amazed they haven't shipped those to Altoona yet.
I’m from Villa Rica Georgia and I remember the derailment you covered that happened there. Think it’s cool you’re covering all this railroad stuff in GA in places so close to me. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I’m kinda surprised they are saying worn track. Back in about 2016/2017 there was a track gang camp set up on that siding replacing several miles wort of rail. Yes it a curve that does see trains traveling at 45 mph but the wear just seems premature.
Maybe they didn't replace the switch, and that's what was worn out?
@@ThePTBRULES that is actually the case, in research i did a couple of years ago, the switch hasn’t been replaced since before 2002. I will say its a good thing they got rid of that.
Good catch. Great video!
I watch your stuff - it’s always well presented. This report is an excellent rundown of the facts accumulated so far and lacks reckless speculation. Your work is excellent. Nice yob! 👍
I really appreciate that! Thank you!

Dang 8133 got hit hard in the side
3629 is a tier 4, very late model that can't have been in service more than a few years. It looks like the frame/bedplate might be bent.
Quick question for V12 Productions, When they NS going get those engines and freight cars off the siding?
I hate trains when they get wrecked. That makes me sad.
Thanks for update
Nice footage, really good video
Amazing video. Excellent narration. You could work for the NTSB. I wonder what will become of all that damaged equipment. Salvage usable parts? Scrap? Repair?
Thanks!
CSX I025 just derailed in Douglas GA. Crew is being sent into emergency surgery
Just saw that. Hope they are ok.
I use to fuel those engines, they “can” hold 5000 but will not be fuel more than 4500 due to slosh and hills, and maintenance oft times does not account that weather , speed, and conditions always have an effect, even a rail just slightly out of alignment will cause a derail
Thanks for the info!
The rolling stock laid down on the sides really reminds me of toy trains LOL
It makes sense that unworking things would be there.
Good job
Will the engines get repaired
Interesting content , I'm not familure with the area at all but it a side interest being railroading .
That’s interesting. I know somebody who lives in that area. This was also on channel 2 action news.
I wonder what will happen to the engines and the train cars.
I'm just surprised that those locomotives weren't still running when these photos were being taken long after the derailment, despite the missing trucks and being off the tracks. No other condition seems to keep the roads from parking them in the "on" position. 😆
Maybe you’re just catching them when they’re running. All of the locomotives in the video are new enough that they came with auto start/stop software in them. They start and stop as needed to keep air pressure built up when coupled to a train, but if not coupled to a train, they’re usually shut down for fuel conservation. The start/stop feature automatically disables itself when the ambient temperature is 35 degrees F. and below to prevent no start issues and then the engine cooling water dumps when the water gets to around 35 degrees F so as to prevent freeze damage to the engine.
@@ralfie8801 AESS/Smartstart? Sure, you just keep right on believing that's how they operate now. 🤣 For real-world purposes, you can check online for comments about that system from people in CN communities and others who marvel at locos so equipped which nevertheless routinely idle in place for 6 - 11 hours between operations... At the yard near me, there are few crews that are going to take the time for a start-up procedure and warming when they are ready to move, especially over the cool season. Any system they have is not typically being allowed to function.
@@ReflectedMiles
I know how they work, I work on them every day.
@@ralfie8801 You may know how they work, but you obviously aren't as aware of how they are frequently not employed. As I said, there's plenty of direct-observation commentary out there and questions about why locomotives are still idling for lengthy periods.
@@ReflectedMiles
The system has to be defeated to not work as intended, but it’s easy to do. That particular company just allows that to happen.
My company will call from headquarters 800 miles away and ask why unit such and such is running if there’s no obvious reason like temps hovering around 35*F. Our managers are supposed to log a reason in the database if we leave one running, main reasons are battery charging and troubleshooting. Lots of that stuff that can be seen with the locomotives automatic upload every couple of hours. We get dinged for having units running, when they on trains it’s a different story. There’s almost always one running to keep air on the train so the brakes stay set.
Edit: The AESS is always working on the trailing units in the consist while on our trains, the lead unit usually won’t go into AESS due the number of cycles the air compressor is making in order to keep the train charged with air.
I wonder if they going to fix 3 NS locos 8133, 9759, & 3629 if they gonna to repair fixing or not
i bet they will at least repair 8133 and 3629 but id say it's a 50/50 if they repair 9759 since it's a dash 9 and those are being phased out so i think if they do repair 9759 it will be rebuilt to an ac44c6m but idk

Sir Topham Hatt be Like,Well Diesel 8133 you have a lot to learn about Trucks even that you can’t never trust them, now I’m taking your branch line away and you’ll be scraped since we didn’t had enough money to repair you…
Diesel 8133:😢
It could be simple stuff like the repair shops already have a full load and it's a matter of "storing" the stuff at the crash site or at the repair yards. If there isn't any hurry, wait until the equipment can be slotted in.
When a 25MPH slow order should've been a 10 lol
I have to wonder why does America have an insane amount of train wrecks
8133 must have gone for a pretty decent slide to sand off all that paint.
The only other way I usually see a pattern like that is fire, but I don't recall hearing about any fire.
Wow that's amazing good job and i hope the crew is ok any word on Ns 8099?

Poor locomotives :(
Nfs is not inspecting the switch tracks and locomotives like they should be !!!
the crew ok?
Hm would it be best to locomotives to thair former glory once the derailment cause is figured out
My guess they will end up at Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX)
They should be jumping up and down that they had bought the cheapest, least powerful black and white engines made..... If they'd have had the top of line most powerful blue and yellow engines, somebody would be on their knees crying from the monetary loss that likely would bankrupt their company..........
What are they doing there can’t fix them or rebuild them
guess NS is using them to hold the earth down.......
So does "business as usual" mean cover up? What if the derailed and topp[led cars been carrying HAZMAT? Oh well, business as usual!
No, it means they sat the locomotives and cars to the side, fixed the rails and got the trains running. They have a priority, and cleaning these locomotives up isn't.
Second, they would would have responded much differently if Hazmat was an issue. Just because they responded this way, isn't indicative of a different situation.
Even if those locomotives are still mechanically sound they will be scraped due to insurance policies by ns
This is the kind of investigative reporting the National/local news agencies should be covering, not biased political BS!
Oh
I bet they are or they are new trucks for them just so they can move the locos
Awn is not a word
why do you just abandon those trains
Look like these Engines Aren’t Really Useful after all
These engines do not hold 5,000 gallons of fuel, I guess it’s good for tv right whatever you wanna say but it’s miss leading. Largest fuel tank is 4,000 gallons on a GE. And engines are only fueled for destination so they wouldn’t even have had maximum capacity of fuel to begin with more like 2500 gallons each .
Too bad the 3629 9759 8133 were destroyed...

Those trucks your commenting on do not go on any type of locomotive or power unit. Its amazing that you do not understand that!!!!!
Oof
I wonder when they will remove the wreckage?
Took NS around a year to remove the wreckage from the Horseshoe Curve derailments and that wreckage was in a very public setting. I would be surprised if this one gets cleaned up anytime soon.
Corman removed all the remaining locomotive truck and traction motors a few months ago. Apparently, while the switch west of Austell was being replaced, Corman loaded the three engines onto flat cars based on what an NS track worker told me a couple of weeks ago.
