Calling Dragon Quest, a pokemon killer is quite ridiculous, considering that dragon quest came out before Pokemon. And bear in line is a problem with this whole conversation. People think Pokemon Invented the Monster catching genre. But in reality, this is not the case. If anything, Pokemon is the offshoot of the monster taming the genre.

If you're talking about the twitter screenshot, it's a joke, especially since Grindr is there. So that's more than likely the point.
And yeah Pokemon definitely didn't invent the concept, it's just the most successful franchise of the genre.

I was a big fan of both Pokemon and Digimon tho at my school Pokemon was definitely the dominant franchise leaving me to be the lone herald of Digimon for my friends. Here in the states there was definitely a feel that Digimon was chasing the popularity of Pokemon but I think that's more because of how it was portrayed by the people in charge of the U.S. release like how you pointed out with the Digimon Movie and digi rap. I still think it was silly back then to point the fingers and cry out rip off especially now since Digimon is such a varied franchise of stories and themes and game types and worlds

This also reminds me of the Shin Megami Tensei Series, which was born way before pokemon but always got forgotten because of its popularity.

Digimon World 3's relationship to Pokemon is weird. It is the Digimon game whose progression (going around beating leaders and also fighting an evil organization) and battle system (only having one out at a time and switching taking up a turn) are most similar to Pokemon...but it's one of the ones with no monster-catching elements at all. You just start with three Digimon and only ever get additional ones by completing sidequests, never by catching them.

    Great video 😊
I think the main reason for people believing that Digimon ripped off Pokemon is the way it was handled in the west.
Like you said, Digimon was mostly just V-pets until the 1999 anime and even the first few games weren’t remotely comparable. However, in the UK at least, most people’s first experience of Digimon was on kids TV networks and it was from the jump advertised as a Pokemon competitor. Because Pokemon was more popular, Digimon started to do things in the west to try to catch up, e.g. DW3 and the movie.
I think that experience and because Pokemon won the popularity content basically sealed Digimon’s fate as the “ripoff” in a lot of people’s minds, and that was that. And now people born in the last 20 years or so only really know Pokemon as this giant monolith and don’t have an appreciation for other franchises that ultimately lost the 90s pop culture contest.
But anyway, the cool kids were watching Digimon over Pokemon 😊

What I find interesting is that Pokémon Yellow onwards do seem to have taken some V-Pet inspiration. Happiness and such.
So from that perspective Tamagotchi (and Digimon by proxy) ironically kinda warped Pokémon quite a bit, and I would say the same happened the other way too for Digimon.
Then again apparently if Pokémon hadn't reminded Bandai so much of Pocket Zaurus then Digimon would have been a spiritual successor to that called Cappu-Zaurus...
So with ten tons worth of irony about the reasoning, Digimon does kinda owe its existence to Pokémon... Because if Pokémon didn't exist, then instead of Digimon we would have something called Cappu-Zaurus instead, which would probably be poor substitute for both...

I was pretty alienated from my peers during primary school because I was the only one in my class who knew and loved Digimon while everyone else, including my close friends, were all into Pokémon which was something I recall actively disliking despite trying to get into it numerous times so I could fit in. Eventually, I would come to like Pokémon as I got older though it never reached the same obsession I have with Digimon.
But I remember the very thing that would make me loathe Pokémon for a long time. It was this official Pokédex guidebook that came out in between Diamond, Pearl, and Platinums releases. I got it as a way to properly introduce me to Pokémon, but most importantly it featured a QnA near the end of the book where fans wrote in letters to the writers, and they answered back.
One question submitted was about Digimon being a ripoff or not. They even showed a picture of Davis and Veemon, which blew my mind that an OFFICIAL Pokémon book acknowledged Digimons existence and even featured artwork.
And it was their response that annoyed me. Instead of telling their readers that Digimon and Pokémon, while similar on the surface, were very different at their core, they went straight for the kill and outright denounced Digimon as being nothing more than "a shallow imitation of our beloved Pokémon." Going as far as to mock and compare other elements of Digimon to Pokémon, I'm pretty sure they even used the word "ripoff" as extra salt on the wound.
And for an impressionable 7-year-old at the time, this was an absolute insult and a spit in the face.

Holy crap, I didn't know they did that. That's really unprofessional. I had the ruby/sapphire book but not the platinum/pearl one. Crazy Pokemon would say stuff like this when SMT, DQ, and Monster In My Pocket all did the concept before Pokemon, they don't have a leg to stand on.

Do you remember the exact book? I couldn't find an FaQ section in either the Diamond&Pearl Guidebook or the Platinum Guidebook. I'm wondering if this may have been a fanmade book or third party.

@@taso8774 I honestly wish I still had it as I've been scurrying around in my room in hopes that it wasn't thrown out but unfortunately it seems that way for the moment unless I find it somewhere else I haven't searched yet.
I'm also confident that this was *official* and if it helps narrow things down slightly, I do recall it promoting Arceus and the Jewel Of Life as well as Arceus being the last Pokèmon in the Pokèdex section up to that point with 493.
There were also small activities to do in the book with a crossword search being the one I remember the most but there were a few of then. And finally it would end on the QnA with that infamous question on Digimon burned into my memory.

@@taso8774 DUDE Hey it's been a while BUT I HAVE IT, I STILL HAVE IT. It's called *Pokémon World: Ultimate Pokédex guide*
However looking at it after all this time, I don't think this is official and it's most likely to be fanmade/third party which does explain how crass and unprofessional their response was to the question because it would be wild for an official Pokémon guide to fire shots at Digimon for no reason other than to give a weird flex.
So while it might not seem too shocking as I initially remembered it, those feelings still persisted either way, official or not lol.

I am just surprised that they call other monster franchises "pokemon clones" still, imagine people still calling every first person shooter a "doom clone" nowadays lol. Here in Austria, the virtual pets weren't that popular, but the show was considered different from pokemon still (and the music in german was soooo good because we got translated versions of the original songs). Also Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (the very first shin megami tensei) was all about persuading monsters (demons) to join your party and collect them and that came out in 1987 so pokemon was hardly the first either. I love pokemon since I got red as a child and I also love digimon ever since I saw adventure (also we never had the english weird digimon movie here, I recently watched it and I was so confused lol)

  • @LucatheDingo88

Pokemon and Digimon I feel were just new entry's in a type of multimedia franchise that was just coming into existence, that being the Monster Collecting franchise. Usually the only similarities between Pokemon and Digimon is there about a group of kids who go on an adventure with there Monster companions, but beyond that they both go in very different directions. There essentially the Marvel and DC of Monster Collecting.
someone did an exellent video of different franchises influenced by the success of Pokemon I'll link bellow, but one thing to keep in mind is it's not like Pokemon was the first game to introduce the concept of recruiting enemy monsters to fight in your party, as there games like Shin Megami tensei and Dragon Quest 5 that allowed you to do those as an optional mechanic. Pokemon was just one of the first games to make an entire game around the concept of recruiting RPG monsters to fight for you.
I do see Digimon as it's own thing and in many ways superior to Pokemon, but I sorta feel Bandai wouldn't have ever tried pushing it beyond the Virtual Pet fad and into multimedia blitz if it weren't for the Success of the Pokemon franchise starting that trend.
I'd say it's less the case that one ripped off the other and more that they were both conceived at a time Japan was really having a big boom period for RPG's where alot of new ideas were being experimented and played around with, including recruiting and training and raising in game monsters, Monster Rancher was another franchise that came into existence around the same Time as Pokemon and Digimon and also was based around several ideas seen in both the Pokemon gameboy games and digimon virtual pet.

I would always find the time to explain the difference between pokes & digimon when they would say pokemon ripoff .lol like the sophisticated part of my mind would feel insulted when other people unculturedness would be in my presence with such remarks. In a ways I've always thought digimon is better due to the more mature themes & the way tamers would bond with their partners compared to the pokemon universe . There is so many differences that make digimon better like the evolution process, branching evolutionary lines for said mons ,fusions evo's .the connections to the real world & the digital one . Pokemon is too fantasy oriented like for kids ,(we don't even see other pokemon eating other pokemon or the humans treating them like a food source lol )I like monster taming in general but digimon always won in the cool department, compared to popularity of pocket monsters, i still say digimon are the champions!
