Such an amazing sound that is, I’ve had the privilege of seeing them once after a tip off I had of them nesting in a local woodland.

It's alarm call is probably about you Steve! These birds are so sensitive. I study them in my city of Amersfoort in The Netherlands.
I only found one case of succesful breeding this year. What happens here is the goshawk knows the city pidgeons as a stable food source. They steal the nests from the buzzards and will kill those for territory. Too lazy to build their own nest so to speak. They hunt the jackdaws, magpies or even raid the trash. I have observed them taking sandwiches from the schoolkids or even their candy. It sounds crazy i know but the goshawks do not care. Anything is considered their property whenever possible.
That is just how dominant they are. A fascinating species and indeed very hard to find. Sneaky bunch they are :)
I have never been able to take a single photograph of them....good thing i am not a wildlife photographer haha :)

I've just got back from Spain where we had a Goshawk fly past us while watching an Eagle Owl. Awesome birds & a great film.

Thats a neat looking bird and great shots as usual Steve. What eyepiece are you using on your D850? I am finding the factory one a bit small and uncomfortable.

Going back to view some of your earlier work. Thoroughly enjoyed this. I’ve heard the call many times. It never knew which hawk it was. Now I do. 🤔 Thanks!

Another typically brilliant video Steve. Very engaging. So chuffed to see your subs count soaring, well deserved 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Gary. I’m glad to see your channel over 20k! Also glad to see you shoot some wildlife a couple weeks ago, well done.

Incredible. I have never seen a goshawk in the wild before. That chick is just super-cool. Hope you get back to see them again. 👍👍

Great video Steve. Hoping I have success on my hike tomorrow. Your videos are like a mental warmup for my outing. I found the Cotton carrier to be real handy. Hang the camera on my chest so I have both hands free for the hiking but a quick twist to get free.

Another great video Steve, thanks for all your efforts. I also see that you only have 5K subs, you should have at least 3 times that. You have some of the best wildlife photography videos on UA-cam. Great job and thanks again.

The falconry terminology for a baby goshawk would be an 'eyas'. The age of that eyas, we would almost call that a 'brancher'. There's really no chance of another baby flying around, because if that bird did have siblings, they would be the same age as that one. That bird probably won't be flying until another three or four weeks. OSH :-)

Wonderful video Steve, never seen a Grey Ghost in the wild although they have been reintroduced into the UK from Europe I understand that they are still quite rare, hopefully they will do as well as the Red kites that are now a common sight here.

nice! I believe that solves my mystery bird I got (too far away to tell) the other day when I went up to shoot some eagles outside of Meeteetse. I also ran into something I'd never seen before which ended up being a northern harrier which was very cool and a lot bigger thant I thought it'd be.

I just went online (Audubon website) to look up your Northern Gosling bird to learn more about it as I know absolutely nothing. (By the way, be careful, they will attack humans if you get to close.)
So I looked at some other stuff and hey! There's a bird photography section. I dug a little deeper and hey! I found one of your great grey owls, and hey! It was yours! First place! Wow, that's so awesome! Super job. Love it. Congrats.

Whoops, I was so excited I mixed Goshawk with fledgling, and came up with a (not Ryan) Gosling. LOL

Is it easy to distinguish a goshawk call from that of another raptor? Because I’ve heard this call before but never spotted the bird.

See you are using the 200-500 f/5.6, how do you find it in low light?

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  6 років тому

Well, it is a f/5.6 so that's a pretty big limitation. But the VR is great and so is the image quality.
