  • In today's video I will be showing you how I've just completely transformed my tool store from a chaotic mess to an organised tidy space with the help of some boltless racking and shelving.
    My tool storage has been in a complete mess for some time now, and so I finally decided to sort it all out a few days ago, and have transformed the cellar where I keep all my tools with boltless racking and shelving systems from Big Dug.

    I have had a shop in my basement for over 40 years... done a complete clean-up numerous times and each time I look at some materials or parts that I had kept for YEARS and thought, "This is taking up space, I'm finally tossing it". And each time it seems like I came up with a perfect need for it AFTER it was gone.... never fails!

    Issue with those bins is dust and transportation. I put parts and fixings etc in Stanley sortmaster and fatmax organisers and tools in Makita makpak boxes. No right way though, what works for you is right. Thanks for the vid.

      In a workshop I agreed as that's where you make the sawdust. In a cellar it would be better if it's all just storage

      Agree. I use clear plastic "very handy" boxes with snap on lids. See whats in it before you open it, not open to anything, mounted on scafflold board shelving.

    I did exactly this - sorted out my disaster area (worse than yours) and solved it initially with some Big Dug shelving. (I did varnish mine incidentally.) Then what happened was that the shelving became a lazy dumping ground, and it drove me mad having boxes of tools 'neatly' piled up because the one I needed was always at the bottom. So over time my neat shelving system degenerated back into chaos.
    The final chapter was to invest in a Mafell track saw (no space for a saw table) and a second-hand Record table for my Trend T11 router and I've started building drawer 'cartridges' or 'cassettes' for the shelving. Basically, building plywood boxes that fit perfectly into the shelving and is divided into bespoke drawers for the tools I need to store. Bliss. It works beautifully and my sockets sets (which I use quite a lot) are accessed by simply pulling open one of the drawers. Now I'm just working my way along the shelving, building custom drawer cassettes to fit each space and based upon the tools I want to store in them.

    Like Charlie, I bought a medium-heavy duty racking system a few years back. It was a doddle to assemble and really sturdy.
    At the start of the lockdown, I wanted to reorganise my shed too and went through loads of different suppliers to find the size and volume that I needed for a reasonable price. I ended up buying one of these budget versions. Whilst it’s up and doing it’s job. It was a struggle to put together and throughout the build I kept muttering to myself why I hadn’t spent the extra £50 to make my life easier.
    Once set up (took me 2-3 hours rather than the 30 minutes for the heavy duty), it’s doing it’s job and I’m sort of glad I saved about £50 not buying the heavier duty one. I’m only storing very light stuff on it.

    I like the open containers, great for small bits and bobs. I've been using transparent boxes to keep larger stuff together of same category like carpentry, painting, plastering, car stuff etc. This way I can take whole box out quickly.

    Well well well! I assumed from your videos that you had OCD (or were somewhere on that spectrum) but if you can live for 10 years with a room in that state of chaos then I was wrong. Well that's a relief off our minds. I can still see some of the floor in my storage shed so still some time to go...

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому +1

      Ha! No I'm sort of aspiring to achieve a degree of OCD. 😉 Things have been chaotic over the last 10 years, spending too long during the week on the road in the day job and all weekend doing videos. In this situation you quickly take your eye off the ball and things like tool organisation go by the wayside. So it's nice to slam a system in place which hopefully I'll now stick to, going forward.

    Personally I am a big fan of good old Dexion and my Workbench is made two shelves wide with 18mm chipboard top. I have the Record vice bolted to it and it is rock solid. I have just found a five shelf unit in a skip in an ' as new' condition as a suite of offices was being cleared. I do like the fact it is bolted together and is really big boys Meccano although getting shelves level is always a bit of trial and error. I keep my eyes open for odd shelves and uprights in skips and car boot sales as they will always come in handy. Your clear out is inspirational and has pricked my conscience on the state of the garage.

Sounds like a good system, that and reminds me of my salvaging over the years, from canteen seating from my first job that I salvaged for the kitchen in my first house, to office desks the last business I was working for were getting rid of, that formed the basis of our first office when I started up on my own. On the other side had 2 (deep shelves 900mm or 1m) then two much smaller ones (300 or 400 mm) in the same heavy duty system, so I could use I as a work bench. Was amazing quality and was 2009 or 2010 so not the same competition for the unit, seem to remember only one manufacturer selling it. Lasted for years till I left that job, probably still going now.

    Hi Charlie, appreciate the effort you put into these videos. They been very helpful especially as you show people how to do things using even the basic tools rather than a fully equipped workshop with jointer, table saw etc etc.
    Anyway I noticed you attached the shelves by drilling and using a plastic plug. I used to do things this way before I discovered the masonry bolts that you can drill into brick or concrete and then screw directly into the wall etc.
    I made a very basic video for a friend a few days ago showing him how easy they are to use. Not a professional video at all as I didn’t show the drilling stage but thought I’d share with you so you can check them out and maybe use them on future projects. These ones are ramset 7.5mm x100 masonry screws rated to 120kg per screw.
    I built some Workshop shelves From 2x4 timber equivalents (we’re metric in Australia) and used these to anchor the support beams to the wall. They’re also removable.
    Here’s the quick video of using the screws Fixing into hard brick. Sorry not the level of yours as wasn’t my intention.

      It had a combination of that, and detritus from around the garden from when I built the decking a couple of months ago, and a mattress on top (I built a new bed recently, something I should probably do as video on, but it's a bit niche! I was a bit worried the bottom would fall out when they took it yesterday as it was completely rusted through, but I packed it carefully so thankfully it didn't empty out all over the drive!

    A great improvement in your cellar - have to say I've always been a bit anal when it comes to workshop organisation - old kitchen units/wall cupboards, rectangular ice-cream boxes for small parts storage, all workshop machinery on wheels . . . and tools arranged on a wall mounted shadow tool-board. The Big Dug stuff looks good .... but their catalogue always has photos with very short people standing next to the units!

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks Jon. Where do I start? The content is key and what a lot of UA-camrs struggle with, but if it's anything like my old place, the house will provide you with a constant stream of content so that's something you won't have to worry about. Learn as much as you can from other DIYers on UA-cam, see what they're doing well and what you think you could improve on and implement it in your videos. But don't worry about getting them perfect. The more videos you do the more you'll learn and hone your style. Get a simple but inexpensive editing software. I use Adobe Premier Elements. It's not particularly sophisticated but it works for me and is a one off payment rather than subscription. You can't record everything in one take so the software is important as a means of editing together each clip. Don't play cheesy music throughout your videos like I did in my early ones 😉 There's so much more but that's enough to get you started. Good luck 👍🏻

      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому

      I'll add that to the list, Mark. Basically you don't see a lot of Phillips screws these days - although weirdly all drywall screws are phillips head. Pozi are superior (the difference is that they have a little gash in each right angle of the "plus" sign which gives the screw bit more torsion in the screw, but if you want a REALLY good screw head, go for Torx. They're superior in every way but are still not as prevalent in the UK as they should be.

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Alistair, yes the Value Medium Duty Shelving Unit is internally 590mm deep, and those bins I've got range from 520mm external depth for the largest, then 355mm, 240mm and 165mm for the smallest, so there's plenty of space behind, to store extra bins. You can also get shelving units supplied with bins that are designed for a particular size of bin, but obviously it depends whether you're intending to just have the entire system with one size bin, or alternatively you want a bit more flexibility.

    Nice Job Charlie. In my Production days we used to use a Japaneese quality system called 5S, the first 3 S's being helpful here;
    Sort - Eliminate whatever is not needed by separating needed tools, parts, and instructions from unneeded materials.
    Set in order - Organize whatever remains by neatly arranging and identifying parts and tools for ease of use.
    Shine - Clean the work area by conducting a cleanup campaign

    • @CharlieDIYte
      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому +1

      You raise an interesting point there. I've obviously been completely transparent in the video about the stuff they gifted me. I was of the impression that you don't need to notify UA-cam in the back end unless it was a paid video or sponsorship, particularly where like here the company in question has no input on the editorial content but this may have changed recently as I can't find reference to the editorial input point that I'm pretty sure was there a month ago. The advice online is ambiguous on what "Paid Promotion" means, so I'm going to raise this with UA-cam tomorrow as I like to be squeaky clean on this. In the meantime if you can find the Millard video then please forward the link, because I can't find it in his UA-cam feed (the guidelines on Instagram etc are different) 👍🏻

      Any horizontal surfaces attract clutter. Clearing out cluttered warehouses/storage spaces, my favourite trick is simply to disassemble racking. If you don't need it, and nowhere to store, to the skip it goes.
      Personal usage though, if you have a rack that has barely anything on, remove the actual shelf and store it with any others. Then you have nothing to just "place" something on there when you're busy living.

    • @bobsage4963
      @bobsage4963 3 роки тому +1

      For what it's worth, I would recommend that you never use individual knee pads which have a hard plastic "shell" exterior. I did, at first, when I tried laying a laminate floor. The first time I kneeled on part of the newly laid laminate, one (hard shelled and therefore very slidy) knee went north, the other (likewise) knee went south, and my groin went "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH". 🥴
      Lesson learned. I now use a folded-up blanket, towel or similar.

      @CharlieDIYte  3 роки тому +1

      Brendan Big400 is £130 per system (I have 2) and the Big 200 £72, both of which I paid for. The Value System that Big Dug supplied is £69 per unit, and I've obviously got 2. Then there's all the parts bins, and because I've got so many of them yes the cost does mount up £397 in total for 40 of the smallest bins, 40 of the next size up, 20 medium, 20 large and 10 extra large, and 20 of those bins with the dividers. But there are probably cheaper bins out there that you could improvise with to keep the cost down. However I think the racking/shelving is pretty reasonably priced when compared with the cost of knocking up something yourself as @timne0 pointed out.
