I randomly did an impression of Bamber Gascoigne once down the pub. They all fell about telling me I'd nailed his voice to a 't'. Had to keep doing it all night. Thinking up new questions that 'sounded right' became incredibly difficult but it kept them all mightily entertained. Residential course, Winchester 1984.
There were a couple of other international matches I'm aware of that happened in the late 70s. The first one was under the rules of College Bowl rules (the American format) with US host Art Fleming, and the second under University Challenge rules. I'm not sure if either still exists on tape, but it would be interesting if it did somewhere.
Thank you very much. Just spent more than a year watching a daily UC episode from as far back as I could find, and am now starting from scratch again. Must say, notwithstanding the sometimes mean comments about Jeremy Paxman, I do prefer him as quizmaster, although that's no criticism of Mr Gascoigne.
Broadcast 29 December 1987. This was one of the final episodes of the original 1962-1987 version broadcast on ITV.

Excellent episode! Do you possibly have any more university challenge episodes from around the bamber era?
That was the only one I had unfortunately.
